During the awards show, SAG President Alan Rosenberg gave a shout-out to all the other Hollywood guilds: WGA, DGA, AFTRA, IATSE, and Teamsters, and noted that SAG was proud to be a union. There was almost no mention of the ongoing contract between impasse between SAG and the Hollywood studios and networks. Sean Penn in Focus Features' Milk took the Oscars lead over Brad Pitt and Mickey Rourke tonight after winning SAG's "Motion Picture - Actor" award since actors make up the biggest contingent of Academy Award voters. A surprised Meryl Streep took the "Motion Picture - Actress" award for Miramax's Doubt. And Fox Searchlight's Slumdog Millionaire continued its sweep of this year's awards, making it a sure thing to win the Best Picture Oscar.

anyone else sick of the deification of Ledger yet?
Oh, good for Hugh. Always nice to see him win. And he always makes the best speeches.
Libs on parade – how sweet.
Yeah, I join RockMocha re Heath Ledger. Enough already. The man killed himself. And left a small daughter. So sad. As for his role in the film … chewing up the scenery. A vile characrter in a vile film. Entertainment? No way …
The man made a dumb mistake that lead to his death, it’s not like he killed himself on purpose. TDK was a great film and Ledger transformed himself into the character.
At this point, 30 Rock is so overrated, that being overrated is the most funny thing about the show.
It’s not a bad show, but the industry elevating it like this repeatedly just because of an overrated Tina Fey impersonation is hilarious.
It’s still in last place in it’s time slot and not even in the top 50. Much better shows have long since been canceled by now. Go ahead and keep thinking that all of America is watching it on the internet.
Congratulations to James Earl Jones for his award. It’s about time.
Also, nice mention of Paul Newman. I always felt his passing was unreported since we were in the mist of the election and financial crisis at that time. He will be sorely missed not only for his acting, but also for all the good work he did helping people. May he rest in peace.
To your question Nikki, I’m pretty sure Heath Ledger died prior to last year’s SAG awards, so he was included in the tribute roll then. They wouldn’t show him since he didn’t actually die between the last SAG awards and this one.
Why does 30 ROCK keep winning awards, no one watches it? The ratings for it are horrendous. It’s not even a funny show. I’m surprised it doesn’t win best drama acting as well.
Why is Michael Emerson from LOST not nominated? He’s pretty damn good. He did win for The Practice back in 2001.
That’s funny Tina, my son is probably going to say the same thing and I’m your editor.
Mr. Hollywood, your comments are vile. Ledger did not “kill himself”. It was an accident. He loved his daughter more than anything and did not leave her on purpose. It’s fine if you didn’t care for the movie, but his performance was great. You state that the character was vile as if that’s a reason he shouldn’t be recognized for his work– his ability to deliver on that is one of the reasons people were so blown away by his work. Even if you feel he’s overrated, your logic is baffling.
They didn’t forget Heath. They remembered him last year. He died before the SAG awards last year.
If you’re going to accuse 30 Rock of being over-rated, then why don’t you mention the over-rated competition, Entourage and The Office. I’ll take the How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory over either of those two shows.
If I recall correctly, Heath died days before last years SAG Awards and was included in that shows In Memorium segment.
Just curious…was Slumdog Millionaire filmed under a SAG contract? I really don’t think it was..so why would the members of a union award a non union shoot? Nothing against the aristry of the film..just curious what the standards are for a union to give away awards?
I was wondering if the SAG Board won for best comedy/drama/tragedy adaptation…
The vast majority of Americans were tuned out. Just as they will for the upcoming Oscars telecast. A room full of self-congratulatory bores mired in a state of self importance. I still occasionally enjoy going to the movies. Unfortunately, I despise most of the people who make them.
Hey John, They also award AFTRA shows which are close to being Non-union. I myself being a SAG member never vote for a AFTRA show. Let them get their own awards show. They could have a catagoroy for “Best Actor/Actress in a show that doesn’t pay residuals”
I was hoping someone would jump ugly, just for the spectacle, but… Tina Fey did a good job sticking a shiv in the AMPTP and the weak kneed “stars” in the audience who don’t support the union. I don’t think they even felt it, but, it’s the money line from the night and is being re-printed in every news outlet as we type.
I just hope the “anti’s” let the guild send out the contract. Let the membership vote. It’s not about “who” sends it out – MF or UFS – it’s about it getting sent out. So, UFS, stop getting in the way of the membership’s right to vote. You may not like their answer, you may love it, but it will be THEIR answer – not yours – which NO ONE will accept as legitimate – I hope you understand that, don’t you?
AaronSch,
My thoughts exactly. These Hollywood baffoons shouldn’t worry about getting residuals for internet in ten years — THERE WON’T BE AN INTERNET. Nor will there be a film industry. Get over yourselves and learn how to make fire.
Fiddling while Rome burns, that’s what it was. AaronSch nailed it with his comment “A room full of self-congratulatory bores mired in a state of self importance.” For SAG to throw themselves a party like this while people are losing their homes and businesses because they can’t get their internal sh!t together is unconscionable. Every single one of them who participated should be ashamed.
The comment by “Led Zeppelin” that the entertainment industry is only promoting Tina Fey and 30 Rock because of her Sarah Palin impression, doesn’t explain why she and the show won the same awards the year before she did her impression. Could it be because the SAG members like the show and thought its cast deserved the awards they gave it?
And someone asked why certain shows win awards when no one watches them? This is not the People’s Choice Awards (a fun show to celebrate the most popular of the year) nor the Oscars, but an in-house award given by one’s peers that someone looking for a profit decided to televise a few years back. Shouldn’t the people in their guild not care about box office when determining these kind of things? I don’t understand the argument. If anything maybe this will help bring an audience to something the membership feels is worthy of being called the best of the year?
And to “Alfredscott” can you explain how there won’t be an Internet in ten years? It seems to me it’s here to stay. Buy maybe you have a theory of where it’s going and that in ten years it will be so radically different that we won’t even refer to it as the Internet at that time. Please explain so I can invest!
Tina Fey is gorgeous. And her choice to seamlessly poke at the absurdity of the AMPTP and their goal to do away with actor’s residuals which results in doing away with insurance for all middle class actors makes her even more gorgeous.
Who the fuck cares about Hollywood and its shitty awards??
Great new talented actors get signed to these terrible agencies where the only experience that any of the agents have handling a career starts int he mail room?? You gotta be kidding me, no wonder Hollywood sucks
Then those same young actors get dropped by those same unqualiied agents that work at U and end with TA..or any of the fab five
How about people start grooming people? Really building..creative abrasion.. there isnt a formula to success but there sure used to be a process..it was called the machine..
lets get some old talent out and some new talent in:)
I honestly forgot the SAG awards were even on last night. I was watching “Funny Games” instead. Nothing like winding down a long weekend by watching an entire family get tortured and killed.
As for the winners listed above. I am proud to say I’ve never seen even a minute of 30 Rock or John Adams. I like me some Mad Men and House. Sean Penn was OK in Milk, but Mickey Rourke did give the performance of a lifetime (his lifetime) in The Wrestler, and I don’t understand why he’s being shut out. As for Meryl Streep…if she’s in a movie, I don’t watch it. Can’t stand her. And I’m sick of Heath Ledger winning awards for playing a cartoon character.
Congrats to James Earl. TCM showed a couple of his early movies a couple of weeks ago. The man has been bringing it for a long time.
“The comment by “Led Zeppelin” that the entertainment industry is only promoting Tina Fey and 30 Rock because of her Sarah Palin impression, doesn’t explain why she and the show won the same awards the year before she did her impression. Could it be because the SAG members like the show and thought its cast deserved the awards they gave it?”
Politics have nothing to do with it. Sure.
It’s a TV show about the goings on at a live sketch comedy series at NBC from someone who used to work for a live sketch comedy series at NBC. How original and fresh. Tina Fey is a genius. A GENIUS.
I agree with AaronSch, who wants to watch people gloat over themselves?
I mean, I liked Slumdog… but best picture?? Not even. MILK should win!!!
If you get a chance- look at Anil Kapoor and when he approaches the stage with the cast and crew of Slumdog. He touches the feet of Anthony Hopkins! This is an extreme sign of respect for elders in India. It is truly a classy act. .
Whether they have a party or not doesn’t bother me. It’s not they’re fault that people are losing their jobs and their homes. And not having the party is not going to prevent these losses from happening. So why get mad at Hollywood for going about business as usual? Nothing they do or don’t do is going to change anything. Apparently, that’s what our goverment is supposed to take care of. Of course, what they need to work on is opening up the field of contenders, so maybe these award shows aren’t so predictable and boring.
SAG voted for their own and so this is what the ACTORS think of each other. Overall it made sense.
Streep was mesmerizing.
Sean Penn is officially a legend (to me)
Winslet was great as usual
And Heath Ledger was great as well.
The only thing I disagreed with was “Slumdog” It felt like political correctness (and wariness of snubbing both black actresses) No way that cast was better than “Doubt” or “Frost Nixon” The people in that movie are barely actors.
Shame on you actors. Let the Academy be jerkoffs and do this kind of thing.
You guys are better than that.
PS: Tina Fey sucks.
@Cindy: the last time i checked, no one forced you watch the awards. so change the channel and quit your bitching.
Of course, Penn in Milk takes the lead in the Oscar race — Rourke never stood a real chance once Hollywood remembered that he’s a conservative. Like he’s seriously going to beat Penn playing gay; the Oscars live for that kind of self-abuse.
Screw SAG. Who cares about their awards ceremony. Get a deal struck to get this town working again !!!!!!
I wonder what was going on the minds of the Slumdog ensemble. They win an event voted by their peers in an
awards show that represents a union which is soon to be divided if not already.I wonder if actors in Bollywood even have a union?
Initially, when I read ridiculously negative and hurtful comments about HEATH LEDGER it made me disgusted and angry. Then I felt relief. If it were not for people like this spewing hate, completely missing why his work was incredible, and being so misinformed as to think he tried to kill himself and abandon his daughter on purpose, I wouldn’t be reminded how lucky I am to not be yet another douche bag walking around on EARTH lacking all sense of taste and devoid of any humanity. Thanks for making me feel better about myself today…douche bags.
I agree that Sean Penn was great in “Milk” but Mickey Rouke deserved to win for “The Wrestler.” He gave a performance that was over the moon! Now I have a feeling that Rourke will lose the Oscar, too, since the same people are voting.
