During the awards show, SAG President Alan Rosenberg gave a shout-out to all the other Hollywood guilds: WGA, DGA, AFTRA, IATSE, and Teamsters, and noted that SAG was proud to be a union. There was almost no mention of the ongoing contract between impasse between SAG and the Hollywood studios and networks. Sean Penn in Focus Features’ Milk took the Oscars lead over Brad Pitt and Mickey Rourke tonight after winning SAG’s “Motion Picture – Actor” award since actors make up the biggest contingent of Academy Award voters. A surprised Meryl Streep took the “Motion Picture – Actress” award for Miramax’s Doubt. And Fox Searchlight’s Slumdog Millionaire continued its sweep of this year’s awards, making it a sure thing to win the Best Picture Oscar.

I’m really really shocked. and even though awards don’t mean anything to me anymore, I’m really, really happy.” Streep also thanked Scott Rudin “ofor going out of his way to find interesting things for actors to do, especially the girls. I am so in awe by the work of the women this year — nominated, not nominated. I am so proud of us girls. Everybody wins when we get parts.”
Motion Picture — Actor
SEAN PENN, Milk (Focus Features): Thank you and good evening, comrades. That was for [Bill] O’Reilly.” About his fellow nominees, Penn said, “I wept at each and every one of these performances.”
Motion Picture — Ensemble Cast
THE CAST OF SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (Fox Searchlight): They thanked director Danny Boyle, as well as Fox Searchlight’s Peter Rice, and others, and accepted the award on behalf of all the children who played in the film.

I agree with AaronSch, who wants to watch people gloat over themselves?
I mean, I liked Slumdog… but best picture?? Not even. MILK should win!!!
If you get a chance- look at Anil Kapoor and when he approaches the stage with the cast and crew of Slumdog. He touches the feet of Anthony Hopkins! This is an extreme sign of respect for elders in India. It is truly a classy act. .
Whether they have a party or not doesn’t bother me. It’s not they’re fault that people are losing their jobs and their homes. And not having the party is not going to prevent these losses from happening. So why get mad at Hollywood for going about business as usual? Nothing they do or don’t do is going to change anything. Apparently, that’s what our goverment is supposed to take care of. Of course, what they need to work on is opening up the field of contenders, so maybe these award shows aren’t so predictable and boring.
SAG voted for their own and so this is what the ACTORS think of each other. Overall it made sense.
Streep was mesmerizing.
Sean Penn is officially a legend (to me)
Winslet was great as usual
And Heath Ledger was great as well.
The only thing I disagreed with was “Slumdog” It felt like political correctness (and wariness of snubbing both black actresses) No way that cast was better than “Doubt” or “Frost Nixon” The people in that movie are barely actors.
Shame on you actors. Let the Academy be jerkoffs and do this kind of thing.
You guys are better than that.
PS: Tina Fey sucks.
@Cindy: the last time i checked, no one forced you watch the awards. so change the channel and quit your bitching.
Of course, Penn in Milk takes the lead in the Oscar race — Rourke never stood a real chance once Hollywood remembered that he’s a conservative. Like he’s seriously going to beat Penn playing gay; the Oscars live for that kind of self-abuse.
Screw SAG. Who cares about their awards ceremony. Get a deal struck to get this town working again !!!!!!
I wonder what was going on the minds of the Slumdog ensemble. They win an event voted by their peers in an
awards show that represents a union which is soon to be divided if not already.I wonder if actors in Bollywood even have a union?
Initially, when I read ridiculously negative and hurtful comments about HEATH LEDGER it made me disgusted and angry. Then I felt relief. If it were not for people like this spewing hate, completely missing why his work was incredible, and being so misinformed as to think he tried to kill himself and abandon his daughter on purpose, I wouldn’t be reminded how lucky I am to not be yet another douche bag walking around on EARTH lacking all sense of taste and devoid of any humanity. Thanks for making me feel better about myself today…douche bags.
I agree that Sean Penn was great in “Milk” but Mickey Rouke deserved to win for “The Wrestler.” He gave a performance that was over the moon! Now I have a feeling that Rourke will lose the Oscar, too, since the same people are voting.
