Conan’s old Late Night sidekick is returning to The Tonight Show as the announcer, but also to take on sidekick duties by appearing regularly in the comedy sketches. After all, no one expected NBC to come up with actually new ideas for the show’s post-Leno reincarnation starting June 1st. At least Richter is better known this time around, having appeared in more than his fair share of failed primetime series. And he’s certainly harmless on air. But the chemistry might have been better had good guy Conan been paired with a bad boy like creepy Lyle The Intern (played deliciously by Jimmy Simpson) who appears regularly with David Letterman. Together, Andy and Conan are just too angelic-looking for me to stomach. It will be the first time the two have worked together daily since Richter left Late Night With Conan O’Brien nine years ago. O’Brien has remained close pals with Richter since May 2000 when Andy left the show. ”We have a proven chemistry that will be an incredible asset to The Tonight Show,” O’Brien said. “I’m looking forward to working with Andy on a daily basis again, particularly since he owes me $300.” Conan is now getting ready for his new gig, which will have new address (Universal City instead of Burbank) as well as a newly constructed set.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Lmao. Can’t wait to see Conan back on the air. Sad the Joel Goddard(sp?) ins’t coming to LA. Hope he sticks around for Fallon because he’ll need all the help he can get.
Stay cool my babies!!
This is great news!!! Conan and Andy have great chemistry and opens the door for a lot of great bits, especially since Conan won’t have Max around to play off of. Very excited to see this!
Nikki–
Do you just hate thing of quality? Lyle the intern? That’s better than two guys with already proven chemistry how exactly? The fact they’re pairing up might actually make me watch more often because Conan was never funnier than when Andy was around.
Conan and Andy are awesome together, it’s the way it should be!
Conan may need help in the ratings…and Richter may be the goose he needs.
Conan and Andy have great chemistry and opens the door for a lot of great bits, especially since Conan won’t have Max around to play off of.
Max Weinberg is joining him. Didn’t you see the final show?
The beginning of the end. America, see why you didn’t stay up later for 16 years.
Lyle the Intern needs his own sitcom! Are you listening World Wide Pants?
Wow- with Andy back in the fold I may watch the show. I was planning to avoid it completely but Andy brings
an element of fun back to Conan. I will never forget the field piece that had Andy rolling in the mud at the Woodstock 2 concert. When Andy left the show I stopped watching it.
Nikki, your bile has rotted your brain. That you think Lyle the Intern or David Letterman are remotely funny is why you should never review comedy.
Andy and Conan, together again. Comedy as it ought to be! Bliss to any fan of late-night.
I love it, saw Andy on Spike Feresten’s show last week when Spike brought up the idea. I could tell that something was up. I’m looking forward to it!
Andy Schmandy. The only real bonafide choice should be Triumph!
It doesn’t matter, Letterman will kill ‘em. Conan is more obnoxious than Joan Rivers.
You know . . . Conan’s closer to the Johnny Carson model of a late night host than Leno is. Both share a comedy writing background, sophomoric sketches, a dignified yet clownish exterior, and energy all about them. Not to mention both are willing to make an ass out of themselves. Meanwhile, Leno’s the guy you want to drink beer with, Norm Peterson with a little more jokes. He’d rather accentuate people’s ignorance and embarrassing traits than his own.
People like that sort of thing, but I miss the Carson-esque feel of the Tonight Show, and I know that Conan can bring that feeling back to the show.
Letterman’s an asshole. Conan is a nice human.
“Too angelic looking for me to stomach”
Cruella DeVille much, Nikki?
Andy looked a little rough on the last show Friday night in New York. It’ll be fun to see them partner up again, though. I might have to “go tourist” and attend a taping.
All I know is Jimmy Kimmel Live will never make it to June 1st to compete with Conan for that second half hour. The show will be canceled by the middle of May when, yet another sweeps comes and goes and Jimmy’s still pulling a 1.3/4. Finally this sham of a show will come to a merciful end.
Although I’m glad that Andy will be back, the real question as far as I’m concerned is whether the move to LA will hurt the show in some currently indefinable way. Nor do I understand why the show can’t originate from New York, as Carson’s used to do until (I think) the early 1970s; has anyone explained why the show must move?
I like Letterman, although he’s been around so long (27 years since Late Night premiered with him as host) that I won’t miss him when I watch Conan instead.
Along with Richard Belzer I have doubts about how such series as his can exist at an hour other than 10 p.m. But I sure won’t be watching Jay.
Andy Barker P.I. was genius which is why it was canceled. People just don’t understand.
I just don’t get the Conan thing, not my cup of tea. Looks like I’ll be getting to sleep a little earlier then usual.
Nikki-
Really, darling? I know your tastes are classically ‘un-hip’ and while I agree with you on many points, Conan has spent the past fifteen years establishing himself as good, solid comedy.
His years with Richter were some of his best.
And really, Nikki, hate much? He’s obviously not Clark Gable, but you gotta respect the guy for landing some leading roles in prime time, however they may turn out. He’s a reliable standby in features. He’s not obnoxious nor does he come across as arrogant.
Just because he’s not your flavor, doesn’t mean you should shower him with ridicule. Sheesh.
The plane is overhead….the crowd is watching….they jump: streamers. Leno moves back to 11 30. Conan EP’s the Simpsons and Andy gets a pilot.
When Richter was on the show, it was unwatchable.
This don’t bode well…but I’ll give it a shot.
Jesus, Nikki, what would make you happy at 1130p? You want Bernie Madoff or the Unabomber hired as announcers? You want the Blue Collar Comedy Tour guys signed as sketch players? What’s wrong with literate, surreal humor from two guys who team beautifully and hit comedy home runs together for seven years in late night?
This is a great sign of hope for the “Tonight Show” franchise. Jay’s not going to vary his pitch at 1000p — he’ll keep on bleating high-speed, obvious one-liners to middle America… the “vote for Jay!” material that squeezes applause from the audience every 15 seconds. O’Brien, meanwhile, can resuscitate the spirit of Carson, which is sorely missed.
