Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters is one of the first, and he wore it on the red carpet at Saturday night’s MusiCares benefit. So did musician Dave Stewart at the Grammies. Now its organizers are hoping Hollywood attendees and presenters wear it to the Oscars. It’s the “White Knot” in support of gay marriage. “The White Knot is the symbol for marriage equality. It takes two traditional symbols of marriage — white and tying the knot — and combines them in a simple way to show support for the right of gays and lesbians to marry. All loving couples deserve the same legal rights, benefits, and respect that civil marriage bestows,” say the organizers. Grohl, who is straight, told media Saturday night, “You know what that’s about? It’s ‘I believe in love and I believe in equality and I believe in marriage equality’.” The goal is to get White Knots on as many people as possible, keeping marriage equality in people’s (and the California Supreme Court’s) minds as the March 5th hearing gets underway determining Prop 8′s fate. Thank you for posting this! Let’s all hope Prop 8 goes away – and quickly. I wear my white knot with pride.
This is an incredible organization and thank you for posting Nikki. Founders Frank Voci and Davis Mikaels have poured their own money, time and creativity into this movement and it is awesome to see artists and the community rallying behind this cause.
America is land of the free; people should be free to marry the one they love, no matter what gender. I hate homophobic people, they make me sick…
Dave Grohl is awesome. Leave it to a macho rocker to pave the trail. You know by next year many will be wearing these but its always the early adopters sticking their necks out that impress me.
Yeah, I can’t wait for our nation’s preschoolers to be forcibly taught about gay relationships, whether the parents want it or not.
Ugly Deaf Muslim Punk Girl says:
“I hate homophobic people, they make me sick…”
Does that make you a homophobophobe?
It is great that people are supporting gay marriage in whatever way possible, but before Nikki and others laud Dave Grohl too much, please be aware of the stories concerning Dave Grohl and HIV denial, like this one in Mother Jones magazine:
http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2000/02/foo.html
or google: foo fighters hiv denial
and look at the entries that come up. you will be shocked and disappointed.
Exercising our right to decide on ballot proposition is true democracy. If liberal celebs once again use award shows to rally their ilk around another left-wing cause, fine. But the viewership numbers for Oscar will decline ever more until only San Francisco and New York audiences tune in.
So if they wear multiple white knots, does that mean they support polygamy? Since that’s what’s going to be coming next…
I pine for a world where love is celebrated in any form, and where prejudice and intolerance aren’t justified by moral righteousness. Having said that, I’m a little tired of all of these bits of ribbons and strings. I need a color key!
The pro-Prop 8 people are on the losing side of history. And I think, deep down, that they know it.
The arguments against gay marriage (the Bible) are the exact same arguments made against interracial marriage.
Look I’m all for civil rights, these people should be allowed to marry, if anything its only gonna bulge divorce attorneys pockets with even more loot, but these FUCKING RIBBONS!!!!!STOP IT ALREADY! Have we devolved to the point where we’ve equated symbolism with actual aggressive legislative action? For fucks sake people, grow a pair, write a letter to your congressman, storm their offices, threaten to take away votes, mobilize the base, that’ how you get shit done. ENOUGH WITH THE RIBBONS!!!!PLEASE!!!!!
p.s. DAVE GROHL’s a woman.
Sorry. While I support civil unions I do not support gay marriage. Women in this country have fought too long and too hard for rights within a marriage to see it all go down the drain. It was less then 80 yrs ago that women were treated as property of their husbands. To define marriage between two people of the same sex? No. of note, the lesbian couple from Massachusetts who were the first to be married in the country were just divorced. This is a serious thing and shouldn’t be used as a way to force the country to acknowledge homosexuality.
Oh, bah… Would have been nice if the support — and brains — had been on deck when it really counted. I don’t want to kick people when they’re down, but no amount of boycotting Sundance is going to change the simple reality that even if no Mormon had put a single dime into the pro-Prop 8 campaign, the opposition was amateur hour all the way.
This stuff always backfires. People resent it.
And this has ZEEEEEEEERO to do with hollywood. I voted the same way you did, Nikki, just like evvvvverybody else in the industry.
But don’t push your politics. It’s just irritating. This is f**king America, and people have the right to their own opinion.
In 50 years, people are going to look back on our quaintly homophobic time the same way we look back on the 40s and 50s when interracial marriages were the hot topic. In short, they’ll all wonder what the big deal was.
I am all for equality and same sex marriage but didn’t the people vote already? That is democracy at work and the will of the people.
Here’s a big fucking clue – calling people who disagree with you bigots is a surefire way of never getting their support! There has never been a society or culture in the history of the world that allowed gay marriage. There are valid reasons to oppose it, just as their are valid opinions to support the idea.
Hey Cathy! Yeah you. (Comment by Cathy — February 9, 2009 @ 12:55 pm). Try to not be so ignorant. While you’re at it, why don’t you crawl back to the fly-over state where you came from. I bet you’re probably still pissed about equal rights for minorities and women. How dare “those” people want all the rights you have. What an idiot.
Callin’s You Out – why,how very tolerant of you of other people’s opinions! And I’m not from a “fly-over state” – but what if I was? So what? And what about parents and children’s rights? They don’t count?
Calling an individual intolerant for acting (including voting) in accordance with their sincerely-held beliefs is a form of hypocrisy (i.e., “you need to change to be tolerant of me”). History may move beyond such beliefs eventually, but that doesn’t make them any less sincere now.
“History may move beyond such beliefs eventually, but that doesn’t make them any less sincere now.”
I’m sorry we’re so mortified by your sincere bigotry.
To dude “There has never been a society or culture in the history of the world that allowed gay marriage.” I don’t know about the world as a whole, but I live in Belgium and gay marriage is legal here. As it is in the Netherlands, Spain, Norway and I believe Canada and South Africa too. So apparently history evolves
These arguments are so tired Here’s the truth: Jackie Goldberg and Sheila Kuehl rewrote the California domestic partnership laws to address all of the disparity that was claimed by same-sex partners. After the rewrite Goldberg and Kuehl, both who are lesbians and California legislators, said that all of the issues were then fixed. The governor signed it.
For some, that wasn’t good enough Redefining what ‘marriage’ is, despite two elections where the voters made it clear, must be forced on the public no matter what.
Prop 8 will not go down. Parents and children of traditional families must not be subject to the minority’s insistence that they are entitled to marriage. It is NOT the same as interracial marriage AT ALL! Where did that load of crap come from!?! My son should not and better damn well not ever have to be taught that it is OK for a man to marry a man and a woman can marry a woman.
