Don Johnson and his production company filed suit today in L.A. Superior Court seeking to recover profits from 2929 Entertainment -- owned by billionaire Mark Cuban, Rysher Entertainment and Qualia Capital -- over Nash Bridges. The breach of contract case involves the six-year, 122-episode TV series which he claims generated more than $300 million in revenue, including over $150 million from worldwide syndication. “Nash Bridges is a very successful series and I am entitled to half of the profits, which I have not received,” said Johnson in a press release. The complaint alleges that:
-- Don Johnson Productions is owed tens of millions of dollars from the defendants for its half of the profits from the copyright Don Johnson Productions owns in the hit series that Don Johnson co-conceived, starred in, and produced.
-- As the series star, Don Johnson, through Don Johnson Productions, negotiated and obtained a 50% interest in the series’ copyright.
-- Despite being co-owner of the copyright, Don Johnson Productions has not received its share of the revenues generated from the series syndication.
Johnson's lawsuit is being handled by Kirkland & Ellis lawyers Robert Krupka and Mark Holscher.
Yep, the actors should just trust the producers will come through on their promises. Yep, take the deal now, it will get better in the future.
Folks, they are not even paying what they contracted to pay right now. Why would they do better in the future?
Took him a while to notice.
Don who?
And folks wonder why it’s so expensive to make anything in Hollywood.
They’ve got legions of lawyers to support.
Gee and I was just about ready to email a query to 2929 on a new script. Thanks for the tip Don. Why is everyone so greedy that they want all of the money? Don, will have to settle at 49 to fifty one percent which is still good nooky. But why would 2929 just not pay up, even with interest they made a good profit.
I don’t understand.
It’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to pass through the gates of heaven. Karma’s a bitch and Cuban is owed his soon.
Johnson’s still a no talent prick though.
That check has been in the mail for 5 years.
Voodoo,
Just because he filed a lawsuit now doesn’t mean ‘he just noticed’ — your slur on his sobriety just shows your ignorance. I’m sure he was trying to pursue other avenues that didn’t involve the court system, but it’s the same problem that has fostered the labor unrest — these companies don’t pay up until they are forced to.
There actually were profits?
As the Good Doctor — Hunter S. Thompson — was the other “co” in co-conceiving the show, Johnson should consider doing what Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo were going to do to Savage Henry in Las Vegas in 1971. “Savage Henry has cashed his check!” screamed Dr. Gonzo. Heck, 2929 won’t even SEND one . . .
E Eddy Edwards,
The other “co” in co-conceiving the show was Carlton Cuse, currently of Lost, not Hunter S. Thompson. I heard Carlton talk to writers groups extensively back in the day of how Nash Bridges came about. That Don Johnson was interviewing a lot of writers for a take on what his next show would be. Carlton looked at how Sonny Crockett of Miami Vice was pretty much in control of his life, great at work, great at getting women, good relationship with his kid and ex-wife, etc. And came up with this idea of the cop who had everything together in his professional life but his personal life was pretty much falling apart. Don Johnson loved the idea and Carlton Cuse became creator and showrunner of the series.
Carlton also talked to writers groups about their unique approach to storytelling for this series – that they started with whatever fun bits they were going to do in the episode – the schtick and character runners and arcs and humor that shows usually put in as filler for an episode around the A-story, and then they built the crime A-story around the personal stuff they were doing. That the crime stories were not as important as what was happening with Nash Bridges and his co-stars.
As for “Nash who?” — there were many of us who watched every single episode… wonder if you can say that about any project you are involved in. And it got 18 nominations, including a primetime Emmy. Not bad for a show that was light entertainment, not the gritty street dramas that people feel better about voting for.
I just hope this dont mess up the releases of the DVD’s seasons I have been waiting 8 years for it and now it’s here I have season 1 and now 2 and hope to get all 6 seasons.
Edwards
Thank goodness that you mentioned that. People have no idea how difficult it is to start out, with an idea, get it scripted, etc. anyone of the crude remarks here please …..consider the source.
“Carlton looked at how Sonny Crockett of Miami Vice was pretty much in control of his life, great at work, great at getting women, good relationship with his kid and ex-wife, etc.”
Could not be more bullshit. Crockett was a Vietnam vet with PTSD who drank bourbon like it came out of a pair of tits.
