As I first reported on Friday, Steven Spielberg has had a longstanding 2% consulting deal with Universal theme parks dating back to the days when Lew Wasserman/Sid Sheinberg controlled the studio. Nowadays, that’s worth $50 million a year to the director, according to DreamWorks insiders. But here’s the really interesting part: Universal’s theme parks relationship with Spielberg is exclusive. Which means he can certainly license his movies for attractions to anyone he wants. But in terms of consulting with theme parks, that has been and will be exclusive for many years to come. So forget any Spielberg/Disney theme parks alliance in the near future.

Steven isn’t making any ride-worthy movies like ET anymore.The theme park ride for Indiana Jones:4 would just be a wheelchair access ramp.
So… now Nina Jacobson will return working for Disney after being fired by… Disney!!!
What a surprise!
Well, how would Universal prove whether Spielberg did any consulting with Disney or not? Especially if Disney can make a ride out of any Spielberg movie Universal doesn’t currently have? And, by the way, $10 million a year is a pretty nice perk for probably a couple of meetings a year to toss around some ideas.
He already gets a hefty fee for Indy. While he won’t be an “imagineer” ala Lasseter, he will certainly get to work on a ride if he makes a hit Disney branded movie that lends itself to a theme park attraction.
Still, an interesting bit of clarity on the deal.
Something tells me that Spielberg doesn’t do much consulting at Universal. What are the odds that his existing theme park deal is a reach around given to him by his buddy years ago because you can never kiss Spielberg’s ass enough?
DreamWorks chief Stacey Snider said the Burbank studio “represents the highest standard of quality in our industry.”
I wonder if a show reel with College Road Trip, Beverly Hills Chihuahua and G Force were playing as SS made this comment.
