Like the blog purporting to have an “Oscar 2009 winners list leaked”. At this point, with so many of the categories locked as far back as December, I’m sure a chimpanzee could have come up with the same names.
Then comes right-wing wacko flack Michael Levine offering to opine about what he’s calling “Luxury Shame”. “Award shows often mean free loot for celebrities, but with the economy tanking, this Academy Awards season will see real changes in the giveaway culture. My sources inside Hollywood, including studio heads and academy award winners say that ‘luxury shame’ plays a big role. The world is hurt economically. People feel a need to be more conservative and not flaunt their wealth. I thought this was a timely idea for you. Please let me know if you’d like to discuss it more fully.” What an idiot. He doesn’t even know the Oscar gift baskets were cancelled years ago.
The traffic around the Kodak Theater is a mess now that streets get closed a full week before Sunday’s broadcast. I sympathize with this complainer: “I’m a motion picture sound editor who works southwest of the Kodak. Of course, the traffic here is never good and only gets worse any time there’s an awards show and ESPECIALLY during the Academy season, which for some reason takes 7+ days of street closures. However, they have not bothered to hire any traffic control officers, and it is becoming IMPOSSIBLE to get to, or leave, work on the boulevard. What kind of bullshit is that? This morning there was a line on the street just south of Hollywood (next to Hollywood High), and everyone was trying to make a righ-hand turn North to Hollywood, which meant NOBODY was moving. Finally we all made a THIRD lane to try and get through to our building. There was even a parking cop who did the exact same thing. I know you have much bigger fish, but it seems to me this is blatantly bad planning and is affecting all our businesses even more than normal. The driving I have seen is dangerous. It’s not like they wouldn’t have seen this coming!”
Every year, betting sites from Vegas to London purport to give odds on the Oscar winners and claim to be “an uncannily accurate predictor of who will actually win”. I’m not sure who are the bigger clowns: the oddsmakers or the bettors. Here are the odds being offered by something called BetOnline.com for this year’s Academy Awards. Like, duh:
BEST PICTURE
Slumdog Millionaire -250 (Bettors risk $250 for every $100 to win.)
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button +350
Milk +800
Frost/Nixon +1500
The Reader +2500
BEST ACTRESS
Kate Winslett -130
Anne Hathaway +185
Merryl Streep +350
Angelina Jolie +1800
Melissa Leo +2500
BEST ACTOR
Mickey Rourke -110
Sean Penn +160
Frank Langella +700
Brad Pitt +2000
Richard Jenkins +3000
More Oscar bullshit as it comes in through Sunday…
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

I know I for one won’t be watching this Oscars this year for the first time in about 25 years ago. Not because I’m particularly repulsed by the orgasmic spending that goes on but more because it’s a boring ass show and I’m sick of seeing filthy rich people do a circle jerk. The more time I spend in this business, the more I despise it and the bullshit it stands for. I doubt I’ll ever watch that piece of shit show ever again.
Kudos to you, Nikki, for calling out Levine. Only last week he was giving some bullshit quote about getting death threats (when the Octomom’s pr firm quit). The guy has zero credibility and yet somehow, miraculously, he is always quoted.
I would even bet on Richard Jenkins. Gotta have an upset somewhere and if not in the Best Actor category this year, then where?
Levine sends out this daily newsletter that appears to pull stories from other publications without attribution. Today the LBN alert- purportedly sent to 300,000 people asks for comments about one of their columnists. When I googled the columnist- I found only 2 links- one for the LBN, and one for a blog site that included her LBN piece. So with one LBN published piece- does that make her a columnist.
Seems to me Levine is exactly what you say he is a “wacko flack” and name dropper at that.
Can’t wait for your Oscar Nite Real-Time Blog
JZ
Just wait when the neilson ratings on this year Oscar telecast are real, real, real low.
I would like to second the praise for calling out Levine. I met the guy and I’m not the least bit impressed.
I wish my offshore book would let me hammer the line for Kate Winslett because she will win. 100 max bet. Sucks.
I agree with Mohogany-
Im sick of this Bull Shit Industry-A bunch of dicks kissing each other like all is well-while the real workers (the crew) get shafted !
SAVE OUR IATSE HOURS !
Oscars are so BORING !
My offshore book has much different lines, though the same favorites. The best way to spend your dough is to bet Winslet (-170) but also bet Streep at +350. The worst you can do is break even and if Maryl sins you’ll make a lot of money.
They also have Rourke at -170 and Penn at even money. But they had had penn as a longshot previously.
My book also has Slumdog at -400!
Seems to me that the oddsmakere are the dummies here. They will lose their shirts. You will never see them lay odds on the oscars again.
I’m out too – used to have regular “Oscar parties” but nobody I know is interested. We check out the gowns pre show and pick up the tidbits of interest on youtube the next day. Every year it comes off as more shallow, tackier, creepier – sort of hard to like any star who scoops up five figure bags of swag, trots out in thousand dollar shoes, thinks the jewels they were loaned were really gifts and then spouts some political fakery or envirocrapulation. And while we realize it takes you all day to put yourselves together here in NYC we here on the east coast need to hang onto our jobs and have to get to work the next day. Too long, too late and too out of date.
I used to intern for Levine’s “world class” PR office about 8 years ago and yes, definitely an egotistical wack job.
Yes, KUDOS for calling out Levine, who is not only clueless, but desperate. Everyone knows that he isn’t a publicist but rather spends all his time trying to get press for himself – precisely the reason why the few clients he’s ever had have dumped him. He’s been a joke for many many years and I’m surprised that he’s still around, literally clinging to some sort of career after burning every bridge in the industry.
The last the world heard of him, he was claiming to be Michael Jackson’s former publicist (not true) and releasing a press release MERE minutes after his death to state that he knew this was coming. Of course, he didn’t know it was coming. He maybe spoke to MJ once or twice 15 years ago. The purpose of such a disgusting gesture? Once again, getting press for Levine himself.
Pack it up Levine. Pack. It. Up.
