This upcoming feature documentary, The People vs George Lucas, intrigues me because it features so many Industry types talking about Lucas in a negative way as they debate his legacy. (Like calling him the “anti-Christ” and “evil genius of marketing”….) Those interviewed include Lucas intimate and producer Gary Kurtz, Sandy Lieberson (former head of production at 20th Century Fox), Dale Pollock (author of Skywalking), producer Anthony Waye, and David Prowse (aka Darth Vader). But also, sadly, second-rate film reviewers and writers. Presumably, the top ones were too scared to diss George. The documentary comes out in 2010:

Everything after Jedi? I’d say everything beginning with Jedi…
This looks ASTOUNDINGLY bad. Amateurish at best, inept at its worst. I love documentaries about Hollywood and movies, but this … yick. This is what the camcorder generation has brought us, my friends, every Tom, Dick and Harry with a video camera thinking they can make a movie.
I doubt many people would disparage legitimate film criticism…but the fact is that specifically criticism of Lucas and what is now already a 10 year old movie (TPM) is a cottage industry unto itself, as this film appears to demonstrate. It might interesting to see how the hate for Lucas gestated in the early days of the internet, since that is where it seems to persist like some incurable virus.
And yes I do think that those banjo twiddling goons do think that “George Lucas Raped Their Childhood.” It’s nauseating seeing this perpetuated even still. I guarantee you they have multiple copies of the films they purport to be violated by on tape, DVD, etc. etc..
Wow, lots of people with heated opinions here. OK, here’s mine.
Lucas settled. He took the easy money. He could have done the “art films” he claimed repeatedly that he wanted to do, and he didn’t. He went to make the prequels and the cartoons and even more toys and THAT is why many many people are frustrated with him.
He stopped trying.
You see some of that frustration in the trailer, people who LOVE his work and hope that we will see the potential he showed in THX-1138, in Graffitti, in Star Wars… once again realized.
Hasn’t happened. Never will.
Did Lucas impact Hollywood, and create a lot of opportunities for a whole lot of people? You bet. I don’t think that is the point of this documentary. Professionally done or not, this effort is a reflection of a shared opinion: Lucas let us down. And we’re frustrated with it – and him.
Cut George some slack! Nothing he would do would ever satisfy everyone. When all the whiners and complainers all become billionaire filmmakers we will see just how great your films will be. Until then I respect what Georges visions and finances have brought us besides the Star Wars and Indiana Jones universes.
Georges visions and financing has brought us a good portion of the modern day digital editing devices (Picture and sound) starting with the EditDroid and SoundDroid systems which led to SonicSolutions and Avid. His digital graphics software and technologies were designed and then sold to Steve Jobs which became the foundation for Pixar.
His Skywalker sound division has led to incredible advances in the sound tracks for motion picture films, nurturing and supporting the many multiple award winning sound mixers, editors, supervisors and engineers. His special effects division Industrial Light and Magic has brought us the most revolutionary breakthroughs in visual effects for films, taking us from the ground breaking achievements starting with StarWars and continuing to this day on current films and projects. In fact many of the top visual effects supervisors and artists around have come from ILM.
I think people need to cut George some slack, he has brought us so much and for that I will be forever grateful.
Am I the only one who thinks it’s lame that this glorified shoptalk is passing for intellectual discourse? Who cares if George Lucas sucks or not?
As they say, “Haters gotta hate.” The real crime is people take shots at George (mostly casual SW fans or people who hated the Star Wars universe in general) yet Spielberg is hailed as a genius. I DOUBLE DARE someone to make a doc like this about Schpielberg, a man who owes a hell of a lot to GL and whose vaunted vision couldn’t hold a candle to George’s.
There is simply no reason for this film to be made. After the anti-Lucas crowd has bashed George Lucas for over ten years, I think we get their point by now. They can add nothing new to their arguments. All they can do is say the same old and tired crap over and over and over and over again.
But unfortunately, they are obsessed and will continue bashing George until they can no longer breath.
The good news is that we can start ignoring them. After ten years, they really do not need to be listened to any more.
I think it did go to commercial and got very messy.
I will NOT be watching anymore re-makes and I certainly will not pay to see anymore. ENOUGH!
But I do think he has great talent and should put it someone else. It may be his story, but he expects a financial return. He’ll stop the madness when it bombs worst than clone wars.
