I already wrote about how the world premiere screening of Wolf Films' (i.e. Law & Order Dick Wolf's) When You're Strange, that documentary about The Doors, met with such a great response at the Sundance Film Festival. Now Wolf has scored another coup: getting Johnny Depp to narrate. I hear there'll be an announcement about this Saturday night at the Berlin Film Festival. Every frame of the footage, most of it never-before-seen, was shot between 1966 and 1970. And all the surviving Doors were at Sundance supporting the film -- Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, John Densmore. The doc covers the entire 54 months of the band, starting with Jim and Ray in film school, and includes a lot of concert and in-studio footage. I can't help thinking what Oliver Stone's The Doors might have been like if only Depp had played Jim Morrison and not Val Kilmer.

Carl Icahn Now Wants ALL Of Lionsgate
Peter Jenkowski should also be mentioned….he produced the film and is Wolf’s producing partner.
I’m a bigger fan of Johnny Depp than Val Kilmer, but there is no way THE DOORS would’ve been better with him in it. Kilmer sang the actual songs and when one of the bandmates (i forget which one) heard the recording of THE END, he said, “Now we have it.” They were never able to completely get the song live with Morrison before he died. Other band members said it was creepy and scary how much Kilmer sounded like Morrison when he sang the songs. They said, “If I close my eyes, it’s like he’s here.”
VAL WAS GREAT IN THAT SO THERE U GO
Val Kilmer was Jim Morrison. He looked sounded and sang exactly like JIM, It was the role of Val Kilmer’s career and he should have won the oscar for it. Just because your anti drugs, doesn’t make it a bad film .
iN fact it may be the best psychedelic movie of all time. The film is genius and is one of Oliver’s best. So don’t be so quit to dismiss it. Depp can do a lot of things, but Morrison is not one of them
Val Kilmer was great in The Doors. Jim Morrison was only 27 when he died in 1971.
Director Tom DiCillo does the narration in the version
that premiered at Sundance, which I saw, and I had no problem with it — although some people seemed to hate it.
The choice of Depp is wise, though. It will improve an
already great movie. Maybe they can use the occasion to also correct a couple of minor factual and date errors
in the narration.
Oliver Stone is a national treasure, but I saw this doc at Sundance and it’s as if they bring Jim back from the dead. I sat there stunned. I wonder what the world would be like if he had lived to write his poetry. Johnny D will be great although DiCillo’s voice didn’t make me puke. It’s the best rockumentary i’ve ever seen.
I saw the movie in Sundance and thought it played well – though Tom’s narration was heavy handed. It wasn’t until after I had left the theater and checked out your wedsite Nikki that It dawned on me that I was actually looking at the real JIM MORRISON. That floored me. With Johnny D it could become one of the greatest rock films of all time.
Friends who saw it in sundance told me the screening went well but DiCillo came off as a prick. When the screening ended and he didn’t get any questions he yelled “what the fuck is the matter with you people?” Produces: Get Depp’s voice in there fast!
Jim Morrison was the worlds sexiest rock star — Johnny Depp is the worlds sexiest actor. Can’t wait.
true comment ur rite jim woz a sexy rock god n jonny depp a sexy actor
johnny depp as jim morrison???? what about a modicum of physical resemblance? I nominate JAMES GANDOLFINI to try a new version!! Can’t wait!!
Very good choice of narrator. I too was at the screening. Dicillo was definitely not a “prick”. Give the dude a break! He was warm, funny and gracious with the audience who at first just sat in silence. His remark was a joke to loosen them up and it worked.
This is great news about Depp. Plus, he’s a musician; he lends cred to a rockin’ doc about 4 great ones!
I don’t care for Kilmer now but truly he was Morrison…don’t take that away from him.
Johnny has and will have many, many great roles to inhabit…
actually the film is somewhat of a dud. if not for:
1) an inherently interesting subject
2) the inclusion of the ‘found footage’ of the narrative film JM made before he died
it would have been entirely a dud. there was not a single factoid or point of interest not already known by any real fan of the doors.
far more enjoyable was the set the surviving doors played at the gibson lounge later that night…
it’ll be better with depp narrating (frankly anyone other than the film maker would be better…) but it won’t make it a great film by any stretch.
I have to agree with Yoyo…
Saw the film at Sundance and thought the “new” archival footage from the 60’s and 70’s was interesting, but I didn’t LEARN one new thing about the Doors or Morrison. (SPOILER ALERT! It simply retold the already well know story of his self-implosion thru raging alcoholism which lead to his untimely death.)
Also, not quite sure what will be accomplished by simply replacing the director’s voice-over with Johnny Depp’s, except for some marquee value.
This is why you are a blogging reporter, and not a filmmaker (or music aficionado for that matter).
Kilmer was Jim Morrison in that movie, and the above poster is right. He may smell and where all black, but Oliver Stone is a national treasure, and pushes boundaries where no one dare treads.
Nikki, sometimes your playa hatin’ comes way out of left field.
What do you have against VK, Nikki? He was fantastic in the picture. Usually agree with much of what you say, but you’re way off base on that call.
perfect.
Nikki said: “I can’t help thinking what Oliver Stone’s The Doors might have been like if only Depp had played Jim Morrison and not Val Kilmer.”
Um…it would have sucked. How about that? Val Kilmer’s performance is legendary, second only to his portrayal of Ice Man in “Top Gun.”
Hey all,
I loved Val as Jim in the Doors movie. But Oliver’s movie only showed Jim’s drunken moments and not the real Jim. I know he did it that way to sell tickets but please don’t think Jim was drunk all the time. If so how could they have made such wonderful music. Anyway all those who want to really learn about The Doors should join the message board at The Doors website. I am looking forward to seeing this documentary even though I probably know everything they are going say anyway.

Actually, it would have been better.
‘ I can’t help thinking what Oliver Stone’s The Doors might have been like if only Depp had played Jim Morrison and not Val Kilmer…”
Ummm…the movie would’ve sucked.
Val Kilmer WAS Jim Morrison in the movie.
And Oliver Stone used both Val and the real Jim Morrison’s vocal tracks on the Doors songs played in the movie.
The surviving bandmembers (and their long-time producer) were so blown away by what they heard they couldn’t tell which vocals were Val’s and which were Jim’s.
THAT’S acting genius right there.
Hi Nikki,
Thanks for reporting on this. It should be interesting to hear what people think of Johnny Depp’s voice over once the film is re-released. He’s done voice over work before, but this would be one of the first narration projects among his voice acting credits.
Best wishes,

I LOVED THE MOVIE WITH VAL KILMER….HE WAS JIM MORRISON. I HAPPENED TO BE WITH JIM A FEW TIMES AND IT WAS HARD TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE.
HOWEVER THIS IS NOT WHY I AM WRITING. I AM LOOKING FOR THE DOCUMENTARY MOVIE “WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE” MADE IN 2009 AND NARRATED BY JOHNNY DEPP. I CAN’T FIND IT ANYWHERE. IS IT FOR SALE? WAS IT IN THE THEATERS? PLEASE HELP ME AS JIM MORRISON AND JOHNNY DEPP ARE THE ONLY 2 MEN I HAVE EVER LOVED IN MY 67 YEARS ON THIS EARTH……..
