Ohmygawd, I was just told that DreamWorks Animation’s portion was $9 million spent on that Monsters vs Aliens Super Bowl spot what with the cost of the NBC ad, the 3-D glasses, the technology, etc. What a colossal waste of money: it was a mess.

Nowadays, we call that “stimulus”.
The problem is, people watched that commercial with the lame 2-tone color version of 3-D (which, by the way looked horrible) and I wonder how many viewers think that’s how the movie will look in theaters? That commercial probably did more harm than good. Anyone who has seen a full-color polarized-version 3-D film knows it can look amazing, but since they cant do that with television, converting it to two-tone is gonna turn more people off than on.
$9M for a trailer that actually made me want to see the movie *less*. HAHA poop jokes! COMEDY GOLD!
Since the idea was to hang on to your glasses and watch an episode in 3D of “Chuck” tonight on NBC, I bet there is a deeper deal somewhere….but it was a stupid idea..beer, chicken wings, 7 layer dip and 3D glasses…yea, there’s an idea!!
How horribly irresponsible…
I had the glasses. I thought it was pretty sweet. I’m MORE inclined to see it now… but only because I had the glasses.
Quite possibly the biggest dud of a promotion in recent years. With or without glasses the trailer was a mess and that Sobe tie-in afterwards was just creepy. Who the hell approved this? The only thing going for them is that kids will drag all those parents who thought the trailer was crass and in bad taste.
I didn’t see any promo in the weeks prior telling me where to get any 3D glasses. No one has a disposable pair of 3D glasses just lying around the house. And since Dreamworks didn’t spend another few mil to get every home in America ready in advance (and generate significant interest to get people to bother to participate)… you bet, Nikki, $9M down the drain… plus more from people who will never go to that movie now because – holy crap – did that ad ever look freakin’ HORRIBLE in 60″ Hi-def without 3D glasses.
That money could have been better spent paying the salaries of about 100-150 artists at Dreamworks Animation for a year. Would have stimulated the local economy and maybe produced something worthwhile. Instead Jeffrey chose to throw it away on a useless and likely harmful commercial for a film that frankly looks like crap. Great call Jeffrey, maybe that’s why the DWA stock is down almost 11 dollars from its 52 week high.
What a colossal waste of our hard earned tax dollars.
When is enough, ENOUGH!
I thought it was beautiful. 9 million dollars is still cheaper than a Pelosi makeover would cost!!
