Media analyst Rich Greenfield of Pali Research today writes (registration required) that his prediction for Monsters vs. Aliens’ worldwide box office estimate of $483M is “conservative ($186 domestic, $297 international), given the recent strength in domestic movie attendance trends (consumers escaping from the gloomy economy) and the benefit the movie should see from premium 3-D” pricing. He also calculates exactly the upcharge for the DreamWorks Animation’s toon. On DWA’s year end conference call back in February, Jeffrey Katzenberg thought it would be in the “meaningful” $5 range for the domestic market. Greenfield says it’s around $3.18.
“If attendance is weighted toward premium priced 3-D screens, we suspect the box office outperformance (vs. a standard 2-D film with the same total attendance) of at least mid-teens if not higher. In turn, this appears to imply that our opening weekend forecast is conservative.
“We are currently assuming Monsters vs. Aliens opens at $55M, which is 13% below where Madagascar 2 opened in November 2008, however, adjusted for higher (3-D) ticket pricing, implied attendance levels would be nearly 25% lower (while this is an original film vs. a sequel, downside risk at $55M opening weekend appears limited).”

Yeah but, the movie looks really stupid. But I’m not a kid so maybe it will do very well.
If only it looked original. Will DreamWorks ever just make their own movies? Everything they do, Shrek included, is completely reliant on the great work of those who’ve come before them. Without Walt Disney’s classics there would be no Shrek. Without the iconography of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, 50 Foot Woman, The Fly etc there would be no Monsters vs. Aliens. No wonder Pixar keeps scooping up the Oscars. Eventually the public will get tired of being fed the same recycled crap and some original thinking will have to happen. Also, unless someone can get 3D technology into theaters without audiences having to wear those stupid glasses then 3D will fade away. There’s a historic precedent.
This is like Alien Vs Predator, Bush vs Kerry and Freddy Vs Jason for kids.
Ok, I’m an idiot, what’s the upcharge in this case? Profit after distribution? The additional amount the studio will get by showing it in 3-d? The additional cost to the studio per person for a 3-d screening?
Forget original, let’s just hope DW actually does an animated movie that’s good. Every one they’ve done has been abjectly terrible, and dependent on the fact that it’s animation, star voices, and marketing to be successful.
Enough of this juvenile nonsense. I want Pyramids of Mars to make it to the big screen in 3D – that’s my kind of old school juvenile nonsense!!
In my opinion they created the best ever made CGI animation movie by making ANTZ. I would always pick DW over Pixar (and I really like their movies too) because I prefer DW humor. Although I have to admit the MONSTERs trailer is not appealing to me.
DW actually makes movies that people enjoy seeing. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Why not criticize some of the other stuff out of Hollywood that doesn’t make any money and is only loved by super smart “critics” (that is, bitter poeple who can’t make their own movies). DW & Katzenberg makes movies for the people not the critics. Good for them. Good for investors. Go DW.
Technically this is also another potential comic book movie franchise, it’s loosely based on the 1980s independent comic book REX HAVOC & THE ASS-KICKERS OF THE FANTASTIC.
(Which I think would’ve been a much cooler title, incidentally.)
