The Wall Street Journal‘s astute Martin Peers warns tonight that Netflix ”stock-price bubble may be close to bursting” because Hollywood studios and networks don’t like the competition.
The share price has doubled since November, “taking it to a rich valuation of 26 times estimated 2009 earnings — a loftier multiple than either Google or Apple.” But the DVD mail order business wasn’t what juiced investors: it was Netflix’s streaming service. And reports that rival Blockbuster could be facing bankruptcy didn’t hurt. But now “Hollywood studios appear to be waking up to the threat posed by Netflix’s instant-watch service, which the company says is being used by millions of its subscribers,” Peers writes. “That almost guarantees that studios will look to renegotiate Netflix’s content-supply deals on tougher terms. At the same time, some of the studios [like Disney] are pondering their own online movie- or TV-subscription services.” The WSJ also notes competition coming from Amazon’s IMDB, which is expanding a free ad-supported streaming service. Concludes Peers: “Netflix fans take note: A correction is looming.”

Netflix on the Xbox 360 is one of the most amazing additions to movie/tv watching in our time. If the studios take it away from me, I’ll be very disappointed. Netflix is iTunes and the iPod. Regardless of how you try and compete, you will fail. Your only option is to work with them.

This quote pretty much says all that needs to be said. That is the whole problem with these stupid bastards right here. An awesome, easy to use, and affordable service that lot’s of people are using to consume their content is perceived as a threat that needs to be dealt with.
STUPID. Seriously. They don’t deserve to be in business because they are obviously too shortsighted and stupid. It’s a good thing they are going to die anyway.
What’s sadder, videostores full ofsequels & remakes, or buying the same flick on VHS, then DVD, then Blu-Ray, then downloading it to watch it again? It’s just a few chromosomes away from a lab rat running the same maze every day.
Economic Dude –
You’re working in the wrong biz if you’re pushing for sites like bit torrent and napster lil’ buddy…
It’s hard to slap the big-wigs on the wrists as their mega-corp ships go down when you’re right there throwing water onto the deck. Yes I agree with DA’s post earlier, I want one stop shopping when it comes to getting my flix. Sites like netflix or amazon.com VOD. But what I don’t agree with is throwing up my hands and saying fuck it, I’ll just steal the shit. Or that the studios wanting to earn a buck is what led to the record industry blight…
That hole was punched by greedy fans who decided they didn’t wanna pay for their music anymore. I’ll be the first to admit I was right there doing it too — but I’m a reformer. I buy my shit now.

You 100% completely misunderstood the post and certainly didn’t get my earlier article.
The fact is that it is the studios’ behavior now that is going to drive people en masse to the illegal (and untraceable) venues. That is what happened to the music industry. It has nothing to do with wrong or right, it has everything to do with accessibility.
Your conscience, while admirable, is the extreme minority of media consumers.
What I said is that inventory simplicity of iTunes is the only thing that saved the recoding industry AT ALL. And that same paradigm is the ONLY thing that will save the movie biz.
Long live netflix. I like the streaming alright but you can’t yet get the extra’s like commentary or out takes … etc.
Support Netflix-!!!
How did CD’s get to be so much more expensive than records and who would spend 18.99 for a newly released album. I felt forced to obtain songs illegally until iTunes came to be.
Producers are just doing their jobs but why are most so f’n greedy. It’s just the way this greedy world is headed with all it’s ridicules bling. Fuck bling and fuck all you greedy producers sleeping with the IATSE.
Well Networks and studios should get with the program. Becouse the customer is smarter than they are; and the networks and studios are the ones behind becouse of thier outdate business models.
