I told you that NBC got bitch-slapped by Univision last Wednesday in the 8 PM and 9 PM hours. Now comes the fallout: NBC’s unscripted show Chopping Block is being pulled from Wednesday’s primetime lineup at 8 PM after only 3 episodes aired. So reports James Hibberd, the excellent TV columnist. His sources say NBC informed affiliates Thursday PM that the reality series will bite the dust. (I tried watching it because I liked the BBC version Last Restaurant Standing, but NBC’s version featured Brit chef Marco Pierre White’s mumbling and fingerwagging.) The restaurant competition debuted poorly on March 12th, then plunged in the ratings with each week. Replacing it will be repeats of 2008 episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
Now you can see I’m not the only one snarking about NBC’s failures. “NBC is fortunate to have Jay Leno’s 10 PM talk show in the fall considering how many slots are getting cleared out this season,” Hibberd notes. “Including Chopping Block, six series are not returning — Knight Rider, My Own Worst Enemy, Crusoe, Lipstick Jungle and ER. A couple midseason reality shows, Superstars of Dance and Momma’s Boys, are likely gone. Four others are looking pale and shaky — Friday Night Lights, Kath & Kim, Life, and Kings.”
OUCH! NBC Ratings Now Behind Univision

NBC=Never’ll Be Competitive.
The only show they have that I still watch regularly is Life because it has clever plots and a charming cast, & L&O: Criminal Intent is the only Law & Order franchise to not drive me away through sheer boredom and predictability.
NBC is getting so deep in the hole, it doesn’t matter if the show’s any good, they have no ability to sell it.
Isn’t Friday Night Lights on the verge of a two season renewal?
Friday Night Lights is an excellent show that gets no respect from its own network. NBC should renew it, air it on network TV, (not Direct TV) and pamper the hell out if because the other shows that are “pale and shaky” are just plain boring.
Long live FNL!
NBC – where the ratings are Not Bad for Cable
Haha, I’ve never even heard of this show.
More sweet news for Law & Order: Criminal Intent fans. Maybe, just maybe NBC never should have ‘demoted’ the show to USA?
No matter we fans can afford to be gracious. Not so sure the same can be said for Jeff Immelt with respect to Jeff Zucker & Ben Silverman.
It seems that NBC’s Ben Silverman can’t pick a hit TV show if it slapped him in the face and gave him a swirley.
Oh, man. PLEASE don’t cancel Friday Night Lights! Such a great show.
Maybe Leno could do 3 hours a night Monday-Friday.
That would save Ben a lot of work.
Friday Night Lights is not shaky. It will be renewed. In ongoing negotiations which will commence soon, it is rumored to most likely be picked up for 2 more seasons although with a couple less of the main cast members returning.
FNL and Direct TV w/NBC are going to announce a 2 season pick up of 26 episodes very soon…the model they went with this year seems to have worked well enough for them
NBC = Nothing but Crap
These are the same guys that pulled the SendMeRSS website 5 months ago without warning and have never told anybody why. NBC loves screwing their own viewers.
“Chopping Block” bore about as much resemblance to “Last Restaurant Standing” as an elephant does to a gazelle. May if it had been more like LRS it would have done better. As it was it was – like far too many reality shows of the past – an “Apprentice” clone in a different industry. The only one of those that has really succeeded is “Hell’s Kitchen” and that’s because of Gordon Ramsay’s personality and his constant on-screen presence. He doesn’t just show up at judgment time the way White (and all the other Trump clones) did. In reality competition shows, as in just about every other form of TV some tiny amount of originality is generally appreciated.
I’m all aswoon for Friday Night Lights.
Never heard of this crap either.
Doesn’t every reality cooking show have some loudmouth head chef who’s too big for his britches? Maybe that’s why no one watches this.
Don’t forget – this is the network that fought the arrival of reality tv and when it finally caved, did so by developing 3rd rate rubbish.
Another swing–and a miss….and to think Zuckernuts and Silverdolt are getting paid A LOT of money for these so called “quality” (*cough*crap*cough)programs. Sheesh.
Yet, people watch the crap on CBS.
It’s never too late to bring back JOURNEYMAN
Too bad about Life and Kings. Both are good shows. Although admittedly Life is yet another “cop drama…with a twist!” Lot of those out there.
Maybe NBC should think about letting good shows try to grow an audience rather than scrapping them for stuff like Chopping Block. Both The Office and 30 Rock struggled at their start, but have steadily improved in the ratings each year (30 Rock having grown from a 5.8m avg in season 1 to 7.64m in season 3; The Office from 5.4m avg in season 1 to 10.47m in season 5). And Seinfeld famously struggled in its first few seasons, and wasn’t the top 5 powerhouse that we think of it as until Season 5.
I’ll acknowledge this doesn’t always work of course (FNL and Arrested Development come to mind). Still, if you have something that’s good some patience may be rewarded.
And, folks, let’s not pretend that just because NBC is in the dumps today it will always be that way. ABC for years and years was awful, then it took a chance on Lost and Desperate Housewives. Things do change…although putting Leno on at 10 does seem to make a comeback harder.
I agree with what’s been said – Friday Night Lights is an excellent show. Too bad it’s on NBC. Brandon Tartikoff would have known how to promote and market the show. Ben Silverman is no Brandon Tartikoff.
My Name Is Earl is going to be on that chopping block if they don’t shake things up in the writers room. It is time for them to reinvent and step out of their comfort zone.
Just wait till Southland,
My buddy works on the show and early reports are great. “nothing like it on TV” it may look like a “cop” show but with John Wells and Jimmi Murro as the DP, It’s pretty amazing looking.
If it is a “Hit” what will they do with it???
I wonder if this is good news for Chuck and Life? I can see a southland pairing and move chuck to Tuesday. Plus firing Ben will go a long ways to save NBC.
