With Johnny Depp getting so much advance buzz for Public Enemies (Michael Mann’s summer movie for Universal), his upcoming projects are news. Now I’m told that Tim Burton may have to postpone the start date on his and Depp’s hotly anticipated Dark Shadows, their Warner Bros film version of the gothic TV series with a huge cult following. It was June, then August, and now maybe not even this fall.
First, any rumor that Burton may bail altogether is “definitely” not true, says my insider: ”He loves the project”. But his helming of Alice In Wonderland for Disney — and people who’ve visited the set tell me it looks amazing — is demanding more time than originally planned. Now Burton is facing a hot delivery date for a March 5, 2010 release. And so he’s exploring pushing back the start date for Dark Shadows.
I’m told the postponement hasn’t yet been presented to Warner Bros. Another of my sources says the studio has already reserved stages. ”It is our intention to still start the movie in the fall. We’re trying to work it out,” a Depp insider explains to me. “And Tim Burton is Johnny’s first and only choice to direct.”
Warner Bros purchased the film rights to the TV series from the estate of Dan Curtis (the creator, producer and director of Dark Shadows). Depp is both starring and producing through his Infinitum Nihil company which his sister runs. It’s true that Depp has had a long obsession with playing Barnabas Collins. Tim Burton signed on as director last June with John August scripting. Originally, a start date had been scheduled for August but then was pushed back to the fall.
After taking some time off, Depp does have a movie inbetween Public Enemies and Dark Shadows — The Rum Diary, which starts March 30th and which he’s also producing.

what about Depp doing “Shantaram”? What’s going on with that project?
Note to Tim Burton: You’re better than any of these silly remakes. Use your talent for good, original material, not rehashes of old tv shows nobody cares to remember.
thats how little you know about dark shadows fans we do still remember
Exactly!!! I couldn’t wait to get home from school to watch Dark Shadows. Quentin (played by David Selby) had the most piercing beautiful eyes. Doubters…check the cast “where are they now”. Kate Jackson, etc. This movie will have the perfect director and the perfect vampire. Can’t wait to see it!!
Still waiting for this, John. Make sure you have control over this character. His fangs could take a vicious bite.
Glad it’s still on the schedule…but Johnny Johnny Johnny, when oh when will you do Shantaram?????
And guess what, Public Enemies is your Independence Day release this year.
As for a Dark Shadows film, seriously?!
We had a string of TV remakes in theaters a few years ago, and they all bombed.
On the other hand, I wouldn’t mind seeing a Talladega Nights sequel where Ricky Bobby meets his match in a young rookie driver played by Ellen Page. That is an easy $150 million weekend right there.
Tim Burton’s ass you lather, Nikki? He’s a glorified production designer. How many of his wildly expensive, through poorly told “re-imaginations” of Planet of the Apes, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sleepy Hollow, etc., etc. does he have to force down America’s throat? The guy just cannot tell a decent story. The last decent films he did were his two Ed movies– Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood, well over a decade ago. Yes, I know you think he’s a genius– but sit through planet of the Apes or Sweeney Todd. I dare you.
My dad went to private school in Canada with Jonathan Frid, the original Barnabas Collins. They were in a boxing match, though I can’t remember who won.
Any word on the status of Shantaram (a strike casualty Mumbai epic in which Depp was scheduled to play the lead)?
I guess Mr Depp won’t have time for that role as The Riddler in the sequel to The Dark Knight that everyone said he’d be playing. He’s too busy.
Well, it seems that what Johnny wants – Johnny gets.
But he’s all wrong for Barnabus Collins, not to mention too young-looking, even with makeup.
depp is in is 40′s thats how old frid was when he started playing barnabas
“Use your talent for good, original material, not rehashes of old tv shows nobody cares to remember.”
a good remake requires a lot of talent, so tim burton FTW.
I used to be addicted to the original Dark Shadows as limited as the production was…so I figure if I can get hung up on a much older man when I was young I can certainly feel the same for a much younger man now than I am older…esp when Johnny Depp. And I’m sure the good doctor (great actress) will be younger this time around…
I’m so tired of Tim Burton doing the same kinds of movies.
Quirky? Check
Dark? Check
Danny Elfman? Check
Just for ONCE, I’d love to see him try his hand at a different genre. Maybe a buddy cop movie? How about a period piece drama romance with Kiera Knightly? What about an Apatow-esque raunchy comedy? Anything to break up the same film he’s been making over and over and over and over……….
Sweeney Todd is a masterpiece of filmmaking.
He jonathan, Tim Burton doesn’t give a fuck what you think. If you don’t want to go see his movies, then sit and home and watch Mary Poppins on DVD.
By the way, no one else gives a fuck what you think either.
Enough about Tim Burton, how bout Depp… Just saw a test screening of Public Enemies over in Burbank last night and it was awesome. MUCH better than that crap-fest Miami Vice…
Sweeny Todd was a masterpiece true! But so was Willy Wonka, Sleepy Hollow, Ed Wood and Sccissorhands, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Batman, Batman Returns, Big Fish, etc.
I wasn’t crazy about Planet of the Apes. It just wasn’t my cup of tea. The story wasn’t very interesting to me to begin with. It wasn’t Burton’s Directing that was to blame.
I can’t wait to see Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows! Alice is my favorite story of all time! Johnny is my favorite actor, and of course Tim is my favorite director!
Tim is a Brilliant Director and he’s too busy making Movie Magic that will out live all of us to care about the negative comments posted here. Maybe his assistant is reading these. Tell your boss he’s the best!
Love,
Cindy
Tad off topic but I’d love to hear how Johnny and Mann got along, Johnny is the sweetest kindest man (let alone mega-star), and Mann is one of the most horrible pricks to ever work in this business–and that’s saying a lot. He brutally berates everyone and treats none (except those with more power than him, which on his movies is only stars on the level of Johnny and studio head) with respect, and his staff walks on terrorized eggshells. (I know, I’ve worked with both of them).
If they do film Dark Shadows in the fall when can we be expected to actually see the movie? It seems like it is taking forever to get this movie off and running. Timmy make a decision will you?
I agree that Depp is too pretty and young looking to play this, hopefully they work some magic on his teeth and prettiness.
Could not agree more that Burton’s ‘Ed’ movies were the last with any genuine spark (I’m not considering the animated stuff). Burton abandoned his creative voice years ago. It’s not just dissapointing but repeatedly shocking how mediocre his movies have been.
Let’s hope when he finishes his ‘earning run’ he still has enough creative passion, courage and vision to listen to his own voice instead of his agents/managers. I’m not holding my breath though because as sad as it is to accept, in actuality, he’s become the classic Hollywood hack.
Sorry Tim, I love you but Hollywood ate you alive.
Has there been an update on this project? Is this movie now in doubt? Hopefully this article can be updated.

I WANT THE Tim Burton directed Johnny Depp starring 2011 Dark Shadows
Mr Depp and Mr Burton,
You absolutely must use the original “Collinwood” in Newport, RI for the movie.( Seaview Terrace). The Carey family( owners of the mansion), are friends of mine and they are most interested in allowing the use of the mansion for the movie. This house is part of what made the series work. It is the one and only “Collinwood.” We have heard you plan to film in England. If so , you should still use the original Collinwood as the backdrop for the movie. The fans will love it!!!!!
that YOU don’t care to remember………..He can produce new movies AND remake loved classics.
