Wait, director Michael Bay is now saying Transformers 3 is for July 2012? Didn’t Paramount talk to him before they logged the 2011 release date this week? (Actually, Paramount now says it wasn’t their mistake, and the studio was just using that date as a placeholder.) Here’s what Bay blogs by way of explanation for the mix-up:
“I said I was taking off a year from Transformers. Paramount made a mistake in dating Transformers 3 – they asked me on the phone – I said yes to July 4 – but for 2012 – whoops! Not 2011!!! That would mean I would have to start prep in September. No way. My brain needs a break from fighting robots.”

Can the studios just get some other director for the 3rd flick? Same blood 3 times out is like having the same press for 8 yrs.
Thought you didn’t do geek, Nikki! Surely this lame franchise is considered geek?
Having helped setup military locations for the first two films, I’m really impressed with Bay’s team when it comes to working on a DoD installation. In regards to working with the DoD again, there are few directors and producers (Ian Bryce) who consistently work with the military with the intent of making us look good. They actually bend over backwards for us. If MB needs a break, fine with me. We were working issues with the sequel by the time the first hit theaters.
. I need a break too!
Earth to Michael Bay- I guess that Brad Grey forgot to send the memo to you– Looks like you have been probably been replaced as Director on Transformers 3. Paramount’s announcement yesterday about the release date would have educated minds such as myself believe that this is the case.
My guess is that they’ll give T3 to Jon Favreau to direct. Jon did a great job with IronMan and he’ll be wrapped on Ironman 2 in time to start production on
Transformers 3 and excuse this expression- but “Jon also knows how to blow sh-t up” in films.
I agree. Bay screwed up the first one, I hear from sources he is screwing up the second one, hopefully they already have another director and just aren’t telling him. That way he can’t screw up the third one.
Is it to rest, or is he circling the adaptation of Pyramids of Mars (hope he is!!)?
proofinthepuddin’ –
Are you INSANE? Jon Favreau will wrap up post on IRON MAN 2 in April 2010!!
Bay said they’d have to start prepping TRANSFORMERS 3 in September 09!
Even if Bay’s estimate is off, 14 months is not enough time from pre to post production on a movie this huge.
Now, I’m no Bay apologist. Not even really a fan. But he did not screw up TRANSFORMERS 1. The studio is quite happy I’m sure with how well it did and the action in it was great.
And don’t bring up story issues – of course it has story issues – it’s a movie based on a toy line about giant robots beating the shit out of each other.
What was the exact date on that Mayan doomsday shit?
TOLDJA! In my last comment, that is. Bay had previously said he wasn’t gonna jump right into a third one. And gimme a break, “the guy”, the studio doesn’t give a damn about the quality of the movie. It made tons of money, the sequel will make tons of money, and they’ll do whatever they can do keep the team in place for the third one, whether it’s a good idea creatively or not. DUH! Pretty flippin simple formula.
“My brain needs a break..”
Too easy, too easy. Like shooting fish in a barrel.
I must be getting old. I was trying to figure out what was going on in most of the action sequences.
And a loud Hallelujah was heard…
Take all the time in the world Michael Bay…seriously, don’t hurry back.
@Ella – shooting fish in a barrel is too difficult compared to that one…try *dynamiting* fish in a barrel.
