President Obama guesting on Jay Leno last night gave NBC’s The Tonight Show its highest ratings in five years. But it looks like the nation’s chief is going to have to make cameos on all the network’s shows if NBC is ever going to climb out of the ratings cellar. How bad is it? Well, on Wednesday night, NBC couldn’t even beat Univision. That’s right, Univision topped NBC in both the 8 PM hour (1.7/1.9 compared to NBC’s The Chopping Block which did only 1.2/1.3) and the 9 PM hour (2.2/2.4 compared to NBC’s Life which did only 1.5/1.5). And Univision spends zero on original production. I fear Jeff Zucker is increasingly following that business model.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

In the interests of Fair and Balanced reporting, Nikki, it should be noted that NBC competes with dozens of other networks and cable outlets for its audience share, while Univision is a niche network that happens to have a huge niche – the entire Spanish-speaking U.S. Population – and only one serious competitor in Telemundo. I’m not saying Silverman isn’t responsible for many a programming misfire, but…I’m just saying…
1. Univision will rule the world.
2. Immelt needs to clear house at NBCU.
Wasn’t it Jeff Zucker who said that NBC isn’t playing for ratings? Well done Jeff! It’s just a matter of time before the Home Shopping Network eclipses NBC’s numbers. Hell, their programming is already infinitely more entertaining.
What baffles me is why GE is tolerating the destruction of a once great network. Maybe Ben Silverman is Jeffrey Immelt’s coke dealer.
@ WhoCaresWhoIAm: While that may be true, every other major network managed to beat Univision, despite the vast competition and Univision’s locked in audience…
I guess what I mean to say is, NBC needs to up its game. Like, perhaps, actual TV shows, rather than 15 hours of late-night.
It’s hard to believe that GE continues to let the clowns in charge of NBC run it right into the rocks. The network is a disaster that looks absolutely rudderless. The Leno Show moving into the 10/9 PM slot for five nights this Fall will be a short lived success, but in the long run, will even further damaage the network’s future.
There just doesn’t seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel. Do they even have a consistant Top 20 show anymore? Thank God they have Law & Order SVU.
I’m Mexican but I have friends who are not. They will watch Univision to see the hot chicks. A lot of old people and Spanish speakers just watch the channel even if the shows suck. I personaly can’t get into Mexican prime time shows because I find it boring, but there is people out there who will watch.
So what used to be the number one network in the country (while competing with the same dozens of other cable networks and outlets) is now trailing a niche broadcaster catering to a foreign language speaking minority population? Is that clarification supposed to help NBC?
Next week’s edition of “Chopping Block” should feature the entire management of NBC. Throw GE in there while you’re at it.
Come on, WhoCaresWhoIAm…if NBC is losing out the Univision there are problems with a big P.
And, letting Odumbo play his celebrity role with Jay instead of staying in DC to save our country certainly isn’t sound, is it?
Words escape me as to why…WHY…Jeff Z would still be employed. OR any of his little gaggle of supposed execs. Who would profit from this little guy taking a #1 concern, with the dollars that accompany that title, a non-contender? Who would profit from that? Makes no sense to me.
One will rise………… And One will fall! I thought this was just a tag line for one of thier gawd awful shows. That shows you what I know.
Well, at least it has company, with the CW also behind Univison.
People always like to look in when a spastic clown is appearing on a comedy late night show even if it is the Nation’s chief. Saying this was the highest rated “tonight show” on NBC doesn’t say much for NBC which probably had an uptick of Liberals watching.
Hmmm, NBC isn’t doing well in the ratings–wow, color me unsurprised at THAT statement! Considering their “throw another reality show on, SOMETHING has got to stick” mentality, plus, Zuckernuts and Silverdolt’s attitude of self importance and arrogance. It’s freaking amazing NBC hasn’t put up the going out of business signs already! I believe it was Silverdolt who made the statement, he doesn’t care about ratings–well, someone should or soon the NBC sign will be showing up on E-Bay–dirt cheap. Have to say AIG looks like pious workers compared to these twin tornadoes of incompetency and greed.
NBC has some serious favoritism going on. They spend and promote crap shows and let the good ones go. I rather enjoyed Journeyman with it’s great cast and Lipstick Jungle. There were some crap shows with good concepts but NBC managed to mess it up with crap writing or crap cast. Heroes which use to be one of my favs has jumped the shark. They butchered the storyline and I’m shocked that NBC picked it up for another (full?) season.
NBC is in desperate need of an overhaul and a cleaning of house.
Univision has beaten NBC on multiple occasions. This isn’t an isolated event. People that I work with have been referring to NBC as “Narrowly Beating Cable” for a year now.
The 9PM Univision show is Mañana es Para Siempre (Tomorrow is Forever) about a man seeking revenge against the wealthy family he blames for sending his mother to an early grave. If NBC were smart, they’d buy the rights and air an English version. ABC’s Ugly Betty is a success. NBC’s Kings? Not so much.
El Sr. Zucker sigue ahí porque es parte de nuestro plan para derrotar al NBC. Hemos tenido éxito!
Why doesn’t NBC raid USA and Sci-Fi (Sy-Fy) for shows? Um…Nevermind, I don’t want them going away…
What all these posts fail to realize is that Univision is competing–apples to apples against all the major English-language networks. So, they beat NBC “hands down,” it has nothing to do with being a Hispanic network. The US Hispanic population is 15%–less if you look at Spanish-speakers only. Univision beats NBC with only ~15% of the market vs NBC who has access to the other 85% of the population. Viva Univision!
