Barack Obama has nominatedhis technology adviser and former Harvard Law School classmate, Julius Genachowski, to head the FCC. Genachowski previously worked at the FCC during the Clinton administration, then worked at Barry Diller’s IAC/InterActive Corp in varuious executive positions for 8 years, and more recently, co-founded a Washington DC venture capital firm called LaunchBox Digital. As the Drudge Report bannered, he’s “The Man Who Will Change Media”. During the Obama campaign, Genachowski put together a detailed technology and innovation plan that expressed support for open Internet or “net neutrality” protections; media-ownership rules that encourage more diversity; and expansion of affordable broadband access across the country. In other words, he sounds like just the guy to hold Big Media’s feet to the fire.

Let’s hope the Obama FCC not only holds Big Media’s feet to the fire but cuts them off at the knees so some independent toes can get a little traction.
Yeah, by all means let’s champion a guy who’s going to bypass the Fairness Doctrine (now that everybody knows the name and what it entails, the Dems can’t use it) and get at talk radio through localism and minority ownership. By all means let’s celebrate a guy who’s going to limit speech in America, not enlarge it (and if you think that opinion just comes from me, the FCC itself, in its own final evaluation of the Fairness Doctrine, said it wound up limiting speech).
Localism is just another Fairness Doctrine in sheep’s clothing, and minority ownership is another government subsidy, paid for by our taxes, for stations that will eliminate the content already proven popular with listeners. How sad — and scary — is it that a political party has to force people to listen to “their side,” when that kind of radio has been outright rejected, time and time again, in the open market? If the MM was right, and the vast majority of Americans were left-leaning liberals, scornful of Bush and conservatives, than Air America would still be on today, trouncing Rush’s numbers. Pathetic. But then again, the “open market” is dead in Obamaland.
Bill Moyers may soon express his view on President Obama’s choice? Hopefully he’s still paying attention to who’s heading the FCC. Remember, it was he who sounded the alarm when the FCC first started relaxing its rules to allow smaller, independent, local, stations to be eaten up by the majors.
