I’ve confirmed that Joel Wright and his New Media department have disappeared from Paradigm. Wright took another job up, and the agent working with him, Mitch Kapler, is going to reality with Steve Wohl. Another Paradigm exodus is 10-year veteran Jim Hess who created the Personal Appearances department. I’m told he became disenchanted and defected to Jonathan Baruch’s Rain Management Group a week ago. I’ve also confirmed that the agency is exiting recently acquired Lori Sale, the head of brand advertising, and putting in her place her 2nd in charge Randy Smith as the new department head. Yet it wasn’t that long ago Paradigm trumpeted to me Sale’s hire from ICM.
And that’s not all. Paradigm owner Sam Gores has hired his investor/brother Alec’s beancounting consultant. I’m told that, for the past month or so, he has been conducting an internal audit of the agency. (One source says, “Getting advice from a world class entrepreneur like Alec Gores regarding intricately organizing a business that has grown to this size is not a bad thing.” Another says it’s ”to help answer the simple question, ‘Why is Paradigm losing money each and every month?’ “)
I hear the only department making a profit is music. Paradigm just bought another music agency this week to become No. 2 in Christian music. But even rival agencies say Paradigm is doing well with TV pilot pickups and promising shows.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

wow, where to begin on this one… First, Joel Wright and the non-existant new media dept. problem is that with New media is 100% talent driven and paradigm doesn’t have any talent with very few exceptions. wright and his dept was leaking like a sieve from day one.
Lori Sale, are you kidding? brand marketing… what a joke. again Paradigm has nothing to brand other than their music clients and a few talent clients. they are so shallow in talent in every dept that it never made any sense to bring in all those agents from ICM in the first place.
How about Gores hiring his daughter’s boyfriend to be an agent in the so called indy finance dept. another huge loser for the agency. none of those guys have much experience in the indy world. Andrew ruff, the head, was a talent agent for 10 yrs and all of a sudden he’s the next cassian elwes.
you don’t need to bring in Gores brother to figure out why they are losing money every month. Sam Gores has no clue how to run an agency, and the leaders of each department are useless with no clients. He puts Andrew Rogers in charge of talent because he reps Michael Cera? another joke. i hear Rogers didn’t even sign Cera, Jim Hess (let go months ago) signed him and Rogers stole him away internally.
there are so many people working at this company where no one understands what their function is it’s ludicrous. This has to be the worst led agency in town, but hey, as long as the 2 rich gores brothers float the agency they can do this. Suckers!!
WHAT! His daughters boyfriend? I’m sure I’m more qualified than that jerk, and I can’t even get an interview. Anyone knows David Geffen number?
I saw the Andrew Ruff reference and it made me blow snot laughing. The only thing that guy has done in the last five years is order the pizza for Jim Osborne- whenever Osborne bothered to come to the office.
not cool to be bustin’ on the very agency you work at ‘bustinonthedigm.’ if you don’t like the company then leave. nobody is keeping you there.
Ruf not RUFF for openers is a smart guy with great taste… At least get your facts rights… For the others there I make no comment..
Shut it Licata
Get out while you can!
Bustinonthedigm is, sadly, right on. I was a client for two insanely frustrating years where it was clear there was no leadership. My managers kept complaining that it took three and four calls to get anyone to do anything.
My TV agent actually told me I sold a pilot when I hadn’t (kind of like, being pregnant, you are or you aren’t). Then on one I did sell (again through my managers) I had to tell my TV agent how to negotiate a deal. He was ready to settle for a number I told him to go back and get more and how to do it. And surprise, surprise he got 50% more than they were offering. Bizarre, to have to tell your agent how to agent. I always wished I could’ve played poker against him.
In Ruf’s defense he’s a nice guy and does have taste, but is hamstrung by the thin talent roster. Every indie he has to package he has to go to outside agencies to fill. I’m sure guys like Graham and Cassian, wonder why he even goes to work everyday with that yoke around his neck? And of, course, every client with an indie is always wondering, why can’t the Gores brothers toss in a couple mil to kick start this project like they did for Andy Garcia a couple years ago?
Let’s be honest, there is a no way an agency like this exists with the deep pockets of family money. It’s more of a hobby than a business.
Andrew ruf has put two movies together for my company. He puts Cassian Elwes to shame
irrelevant, outmoded and full of wannabe agents who have marginal industry relationships is the only way to describe this well appointed financial vortex of an agency. as long as gores is at the helm, this ship won’t sail.
Rogers has the best list there by far. Cera and Mary Winstead are toplining “Scott Pilgrim.” Who do you think made that happen? Who do you think got them in front of the director before it became the most sought after project in town? Yeah that’s right – Andrew Rogers.
For all their size, Paradigm seems to make the least bang. Gersh is far better at roughly the same size. Perhaps it’s time for a merger, or if the Gores really want to spend money, work on getting the decent agents getting the axe from WME.
just had a clusterfuck of an experience with paradigm this week. totally botched a deal. screwed over one of their cash-cow actors. clearly, folks are distracted. more worried about where the chips are gonna fall than the welfare of their clients.
Honestly any employee is stupid to stay any longer. Get out now.
loving the digm, you must be another unhirable to any other agency to defend that place. joel wright was the best new media person in town because he wasnt an agent. he tried to educate them on new media and it was above their comprehension level, they think email is new media. as for lori sale, she’s the best at what she does and everyone knows that UTA has wanted her. most of her clients wouldnt go to paradigm for anything other than her. talent at paradigm is where has beens go when no other agency shows interest. None of it matters, as its only gores check book thats of interest to anyone in this town – thats their definition of independent finance
smart guy, nice taste, no follow through
The only thing Andrew Rogers did with Michael Cera was his job. Because of that Cera is one of the best repped actors in Hollywood. All of his other clients are happily working. The main reason Andrew Rogers is the head of Motion Picture Talent is because he is a born leader who knows how to assign coverage and service clients.
To Bustinonthedigm, get a life and stop hating on the agency that laid you off. At least they gave you the chance to work in Hollywood. Go back to your loser, hating hole with your boy Sebastian Lee.
sam has been dragging that alec reject, dead weight jagoff, lawrence antoine, around as his ‘strategy’ guy for waayyyyyy too long. he knows absolutely nothing about the business and has none of the network, domain experience or respect of the community to be in charge of anything more than the parking structure across the street from that place…though it IS a very, very nice parking edifice…
joel wright. first class act in trying to figure out an industry model that doesnt exist and working creatively to get some deals done. lori sale…more than a first class act that produces. client at ICm and paradigm. great at structuring deals that are new and innovative and reflect the new hollywood (and yes, folks, outside of the very select few, there is a new hollywood that is evolving) its an unfortunate attack in an anonymous forum that two of the better folks in this town are getting hatcheted by some unknowns who probably haven’t completed a deal in their entire professional lives. im certain paradigm and the team will be successful moving forward and i can guarantee that both sale and wright will have spectacular careers
Just so everyone knows the facts Wright resigned and isn’t moving to NorCal but staying in LA. Sale on the other hand got the axe.
intheknow–second hand information has your facts in a twist. they both resigned and both are staying in LA. pay attention as the “actual news” spills out about whats next for each of them..one has already disclosed plans, the other is readying an announcement
Someone tell me what Joel Wright did at Paradigm besides speak on a bunch of Digital Hollywood panels? Having worked at Yahoo in ’03 makes him a new media? The talent agencies see new media as packaging webisodes for ideas that can’t make it on TV. That is why they are failing at it.
Nice of Joel to call all his clients. NOT!
I am a client, or was and never got a call. Par for the course at Paradigm.
If you’re not happy at the ‘Digm, then leave. If you want to be here, care about the company and want to turn around our sinking ship, then stop reponding to the negative comments!!! Whether they’re are true or not, all you do is add fuel to the fire. Yes, I too want to defend our company, but people like Carl Grey and The Dude make us sound so stupid. Carl Grey, your post makes it sound like Rogers was the one who wrote it himself. I don’t think he’d appreciate that and there are other ways to suck up to him. And The Dude, come on!!! Bustin on the Digm is not worth the energy and you just make US look petty and bitter by bringing up past and dwelling on someone who was more interested in spending his wife’s trust fund than working at the ‘Digm. Seriously? Is this the image you want to convey??? No one at CAA would be dumb enough to write these ridiculous posts. Come on guys! Wake up! You are making us look so stupid! All I hear is how we are the agent wannabes. Carl Grey and The Dude confirm this to anyone on this site. You guys are a PR nightmare. Shut up already and just work hard and do your part in getting Paradigm where it should be.
omg……. Eunice Gum, you work there and are defending the agency and yet, even you refer to paradigm as a sinking ship? But you are right that no one at CAA would write these ridiculous posts and further, no one at CAA is even bothering to read about paradigm.
