UPDATED: The WMA-Endeavor merger is back on the frontburner, and all systems are go. In fact, I’m told that one of the last remaining roadblocks has been passed successfully: Endeavor has “put its best foot forward” in terms of numbers and terms to Morris and offered to place “pencils down” if WMA “can live” with them. So the two agencies’ principals are back chatting after a quiet time. “I think it’s a good sign. But there’s hard bargaining trying to put this through.” So there’s still a lot more to decide. (Despite what the assistant boards are saying about the deal being done, or the phone calls from rival agencies to me about the press release being written). Meanwhile, the senior WMA guys at all these meetings are telling Hollywood they’ve won the merger naming war: “It will be ‘William Morris’ for sure because of the international branding recognition,” one of them is claiming. (“William Morris Endeavor” has a nice ring to it…) Now, even the WMA side is acknowledging “a ton of people” in the agency will be laid off because of the merger. As for Endeavor, not that many. Meanwhile, WMA boss Jim Wiatt is boasting to pals, “This merger’s happening. I’m going to run it. And Ari’s going to work for me.” Obviously, Wiatt is deluded. He’ll have the title but no power. Or maybe he thinks if he says it enough times to outsiders, he can make people think he’s a leader. (But if he was, then why does WMA need this merger so badly?) Finally, I hear this deal won’t be announced until everything is locked down. The beginning of May at the earliest.

William Morris Endeavor does have a nice ring to it…rolls right off the tongue.
International recognition? What recognition is there other than in London? Maybe just keep it in London and use something simpler in the US
Fogelman should be the first one laid off. He adds no value whatsoever.
So what then will happen to ICM ? Who will ICM merge with ? Will ICM and Gersh merge ? They can call their merged company ICMG! Or will Gersh merge with Paradigm. They can call their merged company GP! Is ICM even in business anymore ? They’ve been pretty silent as of late.
Well,Dumbo Wiatt will get his payday…..
I wouldn’t bet on the merger being final. There are still a lot of hurdles to go through including some client vetoing the merger for any reason. From a political and economical standpoint some mergers are needed like the Comcast takeover of Adelphia, but some client is bound to raise a red flag over any deal between William Morris and Endeavor.
tell me again why either agency would want this especially wma since jim is going to lose all power and lay off like all his agents?
Is that pig Weintraub going to lay off all his former colleagues? Does Endeavor know the shit that they are buying?
Forgive me if I’m being naive, but has either agency considered whether this is best for their clients? How exactly do we benefit from fewer agents covering more clients?
Let’s see: on the talent side, WMA is a zombie agency. A few prestige directors and writers. On the cash flow side, Endeavor can’t compete with CAA. WMA cuts their mid-level agents and their clients; the ones who remain will be served well by the superagency. END receives a massive music group that will allow the talent side to focus on their top players. Makes a lot of sense.
I wonder which agents in WMA and Endeavor have the sneaky suspicion they’ll be laid off. I wonder if those agents from both sides are already planning to all merge together and form their own agency which could rival even the Big 4.
Jeff, dude…use your brain. First, it’s a “sneaking” suspicion.
Second, the ones that get laid off are DEAD WOOD – with client rosters who don’t bring in meaningful revenue. So how exactly would all that DEAD WOOD, with low level talent, that doesn’t bring in meaningful revenue, combine to form an agency that would rival ANYONE, let alone the big 4???
LOL on Fogelman. Perfect example of failing upwards.
Whatever agents get laid off is for a reason. Either they make too much money, Brad Slater, and don’t deliver or they don’t have clients. I’m sure some will leave and start their own management/production companies, but that will ultimately fail as most small shingles do. It’s a tough racket out there and I wonder how those agents will deal with not being able to lunch at the ivy every day.
They all should have great pre-nups!
Actually, yoyo I think his idea might be right on track. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if that’s exactly what happens. That’s what I would do if I were one of the agent’s being laid off. I’d pull a Jerry McGuire too with the other agents.
And FYI it’s probably not a good habit to tell people to “use their brain” nor correct their grammar publicly on a freakin’ blog then hide behind a screen name. (especially when you have a fair share of grammar/spelling mistakes in your own response) I mean, who cares about grammar and spelling on a blog anyway?
Here, here on Brad Slater! That guy has two Academy Award winners that he signed after their previous agents put them in those movies. And did anyone catch his clients follow up movies? Of course not. Slater does not read, he’s not smart, yet he manages to fail upward.
I guess that makes since at WMA. The smarter you are, the more likely you will be fired. But be dumb as a box of rocks, you’ll get promoted to the top and paid a ton of money.
What separates Michael Cooper and Esther Chang from Slater is that at least Cooper reads and Esther’s clients are on TV series that bring in revenue. Can’t say any of that for Slater. He’s a liar, band wagoner and incompetent.
Can’t wait to see what happens!
GBH
Aaron Kaplan is a tremendous asset to any agency, and should be tapped for a leadership position at the new merged company.
