She died of cancer at age 86. By having the good fortune and good sense to appear in smartly scripted sitcoms, Bea Arthur helped redefine the image of women on television and in society as more than just eye candy: she brought her talent to roles as diverse as a liberal feminist in Maude, and as a vibrant senior in The Golden Girls.

Bea will be missed. Wonderful actress and even more marvelous woman.
I love that she got her first TV show (and the lead, to boot) when she was…50 years old!
That’s a real shame, but she always seemed so vibrant and so witty (she never changed a bit even during “The Roast of Pamela Anderson”). She’s going to be missed.
She was an awesome actress. Even with the success of Golden Girls, older actresses are still not given a chance in Hollywood. RIP
Bea Arthur was a class act all the way.
I grew up watching Golden Girls — and no matter how much time goes by, it still holds up better then most series.
RIP, Dorothy.
She was a wonderful stage actress, too. Such a distinctive, great talent – she will be missed.
Rest in Heavenly Peace Bea – loved her as Dorothy on the Golden Girls but loved her even more as Maude on Maude. Thank god for re-runs and DVD’s
Bea Arthur was a gem! Aside from a rich and diverse career, she gracefully withstood being the butt of so many cruel jokes, no doubt knowing she brought far more laughter than all the mud slingers who ridiculed her. Thank you for showing us the rest of us how it’s done.
Bea, I know you will be forever missed by all of her close family and friends; but Dorothy, the strong bold and intelligent woman I knew from the wonderful series of Golden Girls, -she will forever be missed and loved, but I know she is in a better place with her mother sophia (estelle getty), and she too will be dearly missed.
I loved them all [golden girls], with all of my heart. My friends and family has always kidded with me calling me an old lady for watching them compulsively, but that has never mattered because that show and its characters inspired me so much giving me self dignity, womanly pride, confidence, and of course a sense of humor.
I’ll never stop watching golden girls, on t.v. or dvd.
-may god bless the arthur’s family and everyone touched by this sad and sudden tragedy.
my love forever and ever, golden girl #5
