First, 20th Century Fox delayed the debut of X-Men Origins: Wolverine from May 14th in Mexico because of the flu crisis there. Now Sony has delayed two films for the same reason. “We have been closely monitoring the situation in Mexico all week and we continue to be extremely concerned about this health crisis and its impact on the people who live there, and especially those who have been affected by the flu,” the Hollywood studio said. “While our hope is that the outbreak will be contained as quickly as possible, given the unfolding events we are rescheduling Angels & Demons from May 15 to June 12, and we are also moving Terminator Salvation to July 31. It was previously scheduled for release on June 5.”

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY? I still dont know nobody who has that flu!
Their statement is just reeks of Hollywood insincerity…it’s not the health of the Mexican people they’re worried about. The only thing they’re concerned with is that they’ll be opening a movie and nobody will come for fear of being in a large crowd.
A studio is more concerned with the welfare of human beings than first weekend gross. Not likely…
I’ve been wondering all day, what level of danger would H1N1 need to reach for studios to pull any of the upcoming summer releases.
Biden said this morning that he’s told his family to avoid trains and planes, because if someone sneezes, it carries everything through the entire cabin. How is a movie theater any different?
Wolverine is predicted to make, what, $90 million this weekend? What would happen if that number falls short? Does Fox blame the pirates who already saw the film? Does Paramount worry that if the news gets worse, they dont get the crowds they’re expecting for Star Trek? If Sony is already looking to pull Angels & Demons from its Mexico release in 2 weeks, studios might be fearing this won’t go away anytime soon.
This is all wild speculation on my part. So little has come of H1N1 and hopefully nothing worse will, but does anyone think the summer movie season could be in danger if things do get worse?
