I’m confirmed that NBC is considering cancelling My Name Is Earl due to low ratings and escalating costs. The 20th Century TV show’s producers are resisting the drastically reduced licensing fee they’re being offered. So word is that Kevin Reilly could pick up the show, which he originally developed when he was NBC Entertainment prez, for the Fox network, where he is now. Fox’s own comedy development is weak, with Boldly Going Nowhere near dead and projects like the derivative Cop House a better fit for Comedy Central. But 20th TV needs a few more years of Earl for additional syndication value. As for NBC, everything is low-rated, even its critical hits like 30 Rock. But I bet if NBC owned the show, it would stay on the air. So maybe the network execs will reconsider if they realize the show may head to a competitor.

Hopefully this means more airspace for CHUCK. Nikke – what do your sources tell you about Chuck’s future? It’s a great show, has similar ratings to Earl and is from a studio outside NBC/UNI?
Fox just like ABC will find out that you do not want NBC’s cancelled series. Seriously if you think the ratings on NBC are bad Fox will set the bar.
Man, I watched “Boldly Going Nowhere” and I really liked it. It’s a shame if it doesn’t get a chance.

If the ratings are so pathetic, why on earth are the costs escalating? NBC isn’t actually giving those actors salary increases based on poor performance are they? If NBC is that fucking stupid then they deserve what they get.

Earl will have had 96 eps this year. Enough for syndication. As for Chuck being renewed, that’s funnier than any primetime sitcom. NBC is going to have clean house.
I’m surprised. My Name is Earl, Chuck, and Heroes are about the only reason I ever watch NBC anymore. If they kill it, they might as well kiss Thursday night goodbye.
It’s a shame what happened to this show. An excellent and promising first season, then someone gets the bright idea to take the emphasis of the show off Earl’s “karma list”, and viewers left in droves, including this one.
Earl was never the same after they moved it earlier in the evening. Perhaps you couldn’t quite get away with the same humor at 8pm? It’s sad that moving to the even-more-evil Empire is a step up.
I thought Silverman didn’t care about ratings. Bow he does? What’s he going to do – put on another program that nobody will watch?
“Earl” is actually a funny show. They did experience a “jump the shark” moment with that prolonged jail and coma thing but the show is back on track now. I stopped watching it at its scheduled time because “Kath and Kim”, which followed it, was horrible. I now watch record “Earl” and watch it later.
If all else fails, “Earl” could end up at TBS as an original program. I’m so used to having shows canceled that I’ve pretty much stopped watching network TV.
This didn’t stop NBC from dumping Scrubs this past season, which is now in the midst of its eigth season on ABC. Meanwhile they replaced it with Kath & Kim.
I bet they are dumb enough to make the same mistake twice…
I didn’t realize that Boldly Going Nowhere was dead. It was one of the funniest pilot scripts I ever read. Though I did think it would make more sense for it to be on FX teamed up with Its Alway Sunny rather the on Fox after Idol.
To one of the many avid Chuck fans on the internet, this could be great news. I wonder if the execs at NBC have considered dropping Earl and if Parks tanks, then there is an hour before The Office and 30 Rock. Comedy night could still go on with Chuck being on at 8 on Thursdays. It’s got more comedy than any other hour long show and would work with the two shows after it. Also, it would still be at the 8 o clock, family friendly time. Just a thought, I hope NBC has thrown this idea around.

P&R is funny, the cast is solid but will people be willing to watch the Office twice a week?
Boldly was a very funny script. Nothing like execution to mess everything up.
I used to watch the show but then I realized that there was a reason I always had between six and eight episodes on my DVR.

I always thought Earl was a really solid anchor for their Thursday night line-up. Doesn’t it generally outrank 30 Rock most weeks anyways? I know Rock had a sizable ratings bump this year…(thanks annoying celebrity guest stars.) but still week after week its like on par or slightly below Earl–and Earl has never resorted to doing pointless guest stars (unless you count Eril Estrada)
I don’t really see NBC letting Earl go–since the show’s been one of their signature shows since it (very successfully) launched in 05.
I have always thought that they should consider moving it back To Tuesdays tho—promote the hell outta that–and try to get a one hour comedy block on tuesdays again—its been far too long since they had something/anything aside from SVU on that night..but that’ll never happen thanks to The Biggest loser actually having viewers. Chuck would be great on Thursday nights–but would it actually do ok against Survivor and Bones—(bones in particular)
(What NBC should do is give CHUCK a shot on Wednesdays at 8—With Bones outta that timeslot–that hour is like up for grabs–and Chuck could def compete with Old Christine/Garry Unmarried.)
Jason Lee had the potential to become one of our great actors and comedians. Now he is just a slobbering redneck idiot with a drawl that any kid can imitate. Let The show Earl die before it is too late for him

What a bunch of whiney killjoys. You don’t like the show, so it should be canceled? How selfish–why would you wish it to be canceled when it clearly has a lot of fans? No one is forcing you to watch it, but the rest of us still want to.
