With both William Morris agents repping high profile directors, Hollywood’s attention is turning to what David Lonner (who reps JJ Abrams, whose reimagined Star Trek is starting to stack up rave reviews, with WMA motion picture head John Fogelman) and Steve Rabineau plan to do when the merger between WMA and Endeavor is completed within a few weeks. I understand the pair are still under contract but do not want to stay. The reason is that both defected to Morris from Endeavor back in 2003 to reunite with Jim Wiatt and Dave Wirtschafter, who were previously their bosses at ICM. At the time, Lonner’s and Rabineau’s departures caused a shudder in the agency biz because the duo were among Endeavor’s 14 partners (a figure that’s now swollen to 28). Let’s recall what Rabineau said at the time: “David and I joined Endeavor with a specific set of assumptions and goals about where we wanted the business to go. Over the last few years, it became apparent that we weren’t on the same page.” And what Lonner said: “The time has come to move on.” I can report that United Talent wants both tenpercenters on board. It’s hardly a secret that UTA is waiting in the wings to talk to almost any senior agents with good clients who don’t want to be part of the merger. Of course, there’s an easy solution: Lonner and/or Rabineau could become managers.

that’s b/c Lonner wants the Chernin job that he interviewed for… but apparently was only “eh” in.
That’s what he’s holding out for. And failing that, I wouldn’t be surprised for him to go to UTA or even start his own management company.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Steve Rabineau recently. He’s one of the good ones. He’ll land on his feet, no doubt.
even from my periphery position, it was obvious that this would happen with these two guys of some character. i’m sure they can name their price and good luck. it’s not going to be pretty blending these cultures….
If they became managers, they’d still be struggling against the trend. It’s illegal in the state of California for managers to procure employment or negotiate a contract for employment.
This is coming from a lit agent at another agency… these guys are two of the most talented, honest, intelligent, and decent people out there. Anyone would be lucky to get them.
I’m back…Lonner never interviewed for the Chernin job…but watch a move to CAA…
scotty please stop kissing agents’ butts on comment boards. it’s so boring.
Anony’s got the true story…
Simply two of the best guys in the biz! I’ve had the pleasure of working with both of them and would be hard-pressed to point to any major character flaws. How often can you say that about agents of that caliber? Good dudes.
This merged companies MP Lit Dept. is going to be a fantastic science experiment. Endeavor’s, under the stewardship of Tom Strickler, is about as big of a joke as you get. But minus Lonner and Rabineau, is WMA’s any better? Poor, poor Ari.
I really don’t see Lonner going to eat shit at CAA. UTA makes more sense…though I’m sure he’d love to manage if he can get clients to cough up another ten.
You all probably don’t remember that Lonner started at CAA. He’s a good guy. And my first agent.
“scotty please stop kissing agents’ butts on comment boards. it’s so boring.”
That’s me… a boring kinda’ guy. But one of the best butt kisser’s around.
Too bad guys like them need the big agency machine – they’d probably be better off starting their own lit boutique with a few others and keeping much more of their own commission. Is it worth giving up all that money so U can have a grid?
