Fandango reports that Star Trek is currently selling 81% of all its online tickets. With JJ Abram's reimagining of the veteran franchise opening around 7 PM Thursday night, the pic has sold out more than 100 opening weekend show times across the country. In the Los Angeles area alone, Thursday night screenings keep being added. The Bridge has a total of 15 screenings tomorrow, starting as early as 7:10 PM, plus three screenings in their IMAX theater starting at 7 PM.
MovieTickets.com says 44% of all its Star Trek ticket sales are for IMAX screenings. The movie will open for a limited 2-week run in 134 IMAX theatres domestically on Thursday. The film will also open in 29 IMAX theatres internationally.
There are also some interesting polls. MovieTickets.com found that, among almost 6,000 moviegoers, 32% have never seen a Star Trek movie, while 10% have seen all 10 Star Trek movies.
Fandango surveyed more than 4,000 moviegoers planning to see Star Trek and found: 83% plan to see the movie on opening weekend; 10% plan to show up at the theater in some kind of Star Trek costume; 48% are fans of producer-director JJ Abrams; 47% are fans of Heroes star Zachary Quinto; and 67% are male.
Have to admit, I initially had no interest in seeing this franchise reboot. Now though after all the love it’s getting, my curiosity is piqued … and the trailer(s) do look good. I’ll likely give it a shot. Still wish they would have created an all-original story that’s specifically tailored for film, instead of retreading the TV series. Whatever, it looks like Trek will do big BO.
Out in space somewhere, Gene Rodenberry’s molecules must be forming a smile….
I saw it on Monday. It’s an excellent movie.
It’s a clear rebooting of the franchise that will upset those who have devoted their lives to documenting Star Trek facts. LOL! I could care less about them.
And that’s important. This isn’t a Trekkie geek’s Star Trek, although there is plenty of character mannerism homage for them to enjoy. This is a movie that can be for those who have never seen the TV show or a previous movie.
And there appeared to be many outside of the reviewer’s rows who fit that non-Trekkie profile.
The aftermath is predictable for this weekend. If you’re 40+ and have a blood-signed oath to the United Federation of Planets hanging on your wall, this movie is an act of an anti-Christ, and you will whine forever about it.
Everyone else is going to enjoy it.
It’s going to be a monster success.
Saw it last night, it was GREAT !!! Never liked Star Trek, but this is flat out FUN!
Though I could certainly be wrong this just reads like those Watchmen articles months ago. These online booking sites are like fanboy echo chambers. It makes it seem like there are more of them than there actually is.
The most important weekend for Trek won’t be the first, it will be the second. The fanboys will turn out in droves for the opening weekend guaranteeing a big number. But the real question is can Paramount bring in the kids and female audiences later on?
As soon as all the hipster kids and Fast&Furious loving teens see pictures of fanboys dressed as Spock attending screenings they are going to run a mile.
My guess for Trek’s opening weekend (3 day) is high fifties ($58m) give or take. After that? A Cloverfield sized drop.
But, as always, we shall see.
These are impressive statistics, to be sure. $100M, 1st wkend predict.
Film of the summer right here folks…I’ve been accused of viraling for whathisnabrams but I’m simply a fan from the first syndicated run that freaked me out as a 5 year old.
I’ll throw this out: $78 mil opening, which means it will outperform the total gross of 6 other Trek films, while pulling in 250% of the franchise’s best ever opening weekend: First Contact(only $30 mil). It might have only the 3rd or 4th best opening weekend of any summer film, but Star Trek will rule the roost when the dust settles. US$325mil./$250 foreign.
Word of mouth is solid, and the legs on this puppy will mean that by the end of the 3rd weekend of T4, Star Trek will be pulling better BO that weekend.
Captain Kirk is back and the future is bright. Star Trek 2009 = Main Stream.
The film is utterly spectacular!
To the poster who thinks the movie is going to do $3 million more than WATCHMEN — are you for real? Seriously man, this is STAR TREK. There is a huge demand for this, it looks great, the reviews are great…I don’t get how low some of you are predicting this. If WOLVERINE can do $85 million and trash like FAST AND FURIOUS about $70 mil+, this movie is going to SAIL to $100 million this weekend.
EASY.
100 million on the opening weekend??
Star Trek fans, handsome people, but completely delusional to reality. Probably why they like Spaceships.
Hey grasshopper go look up the films that have actually made 100 mil opening and tell me if Star Trek stands a chance in hell.
I say 60 to 70 Max million and thats a GOOD thing considering the franchise.
Saw it, didn’t like it as it wasn’t really Star Trek. Though Abrams is smart and makes that part of the plot, so not much one can criticize about that aspect of it.
In the end, it will successfully reboot the franchise, make a lot of money, and generate a bunch of by the book action films.
