EXCLUSIVE: I'm told that HBO has just ordered 9 episodes of the pilot Treme from The Wire writers David Simon and Eric Overmyer which has been in development for the pay channel.
It's a post-Katrina hourlong set in the New Orleans music scene and will be filmed there. The local press have been trumpeting the making of the pilot, and crowing how a full-blown series "could boost the city's psyche and pump millions into its economy". Treme is the name of the iconic New Orleans neighborhood where many musicians live, and Simon is a longtime New Orleans music fan. He has told the local press that the storylines would reach beyond the music scene to explore political corruption, the public housing controversy, the criminal justice system, and the struggle to rebuild the tourism industry. HBO also backed Spike Lee's Katrina documentary, When the Levees Broke.

Brilliant! If this is anywhere as well-written “The Wire” was, it should be another great series from Simon and company.
Looking forward to it…
After the slew of crap that’s being picked up around the other networks (see NBC’s IN FRONTS) — it’s nice to see a series actually ABOUT SOMETHING get the GREEN LIGHT.
Go HBO!
Been a hole in my soul since THE WIRE ended. Hope this fills it.
This is nine episodes in addition to the pilot, right?
THANK YOU HBO!
When you walk through the garden…
With hits such as True Blood, and Now this series, it just goes to show you how HBO is back on its game.
Great news indeed. I’m a firm believer that ‘The Wire’ is the best origional series HBO ever produced, one of the best shows of all time in any genre…
Love True Blood. Love East Bound and Down.
Treme? Sounds like an art film that Coppola would direct…wait a minute’…hmmm.
HBO has an identity crisis and I’m barely willing to keep paying them while they figure it out. The problem internally is really NY vs. LA. NY bosses run the show, LA produces content and never the twain shall meet…
HBO is just turning every other network into little insignificant specks of dust. NBC – CBS – ABC – FOX – CW11…they just don’t matter anymore.
How about leaving out the negative and focusing on the positive…the neighborhoods and people that make the city unique. EVERY CITY has its political issues and corruption, not just NOLA. There is enough negative on the news about the city and that is killing the tourism here.
Great news! Now do our city proud by not including the cliches’—this is one of the most interesting places in America, where the “ying and yang” of life create something special. We are not crazy to live here; no one “gets us” anywhere else! DO it right and this will be a fabulous series!
Isn’t the wonderful Melissa Leo in this?
Thank you HBO! I am really looking forward to this show.
I think I just crapped my pants in excitement. David Simon can shoot 8 episodes of feeding his cat and I would watch it.
David Simon is God!
I love True Blood.
That’s enough of the south for me.
NOLA has corruption?
Wow. Would explain why the levees still haven’t been rebuilt even though Pres. Obama should have made that one of his executive orders within the first 100 days.
