I liked it better when the hand-picked Best Team in the World had to go and dig a hole in that Asteroid….
Actually the above comments about jingoism are ill-informed if you know anything about this movie. Of COURSE you can’t play a GI Joe “Real American hero” angle in the modern international film market. That’s why this GI Joe team is actually an international force (granted, with mostly American actors). But be sure that the jingoism was left with the 80s cartoon.
Saw it before ‘Star Trek’ last night at the Arclight Cinerama Dome. I wasn’t alone laughing out loud after the trailer ran, many other were, showing that this ‘G.I. Joe’ feature film looks bloody-terrible… then, the ‘Transformers 2′ trailer hit, and people were cheering!
First we get a Star Trek film with no script and now we get a live action version of Team America with no irony.
Good job Paramount.
I’d take a 1.5 hour thrill ride if it’s loaded with fx and noise and pretty people blowing shit up. Story? then see something else – this looks like a return to simple, summer popcorn.
It looks cool, but I think the August date might kill it when people are worn out from movies and out of cash.
Lots of haters popping up in these comments page. The trailer looks good and perfect for a summer popcorn blockbuster, the effecs look good and up to the state of the art, and trying to deny these simple facts tells a lot about who makes those absurd hateful comments and very little about the movie. Snobbery always masks stupidity and venality.
Looks like hot rubbish! Where is Sargent Slaughter? Looks like they fouled it on this one and really veered away from the toys and cartoon show of the 80′s. Bummer!
It’ll probobly be huge but to me, way too much spfx. Where’s the realism?
Where’s the Kung Fu Grip?
Why does the disintegration of the eiffel tower sound like clinking wine glasses?
No jingoism? No silly characters? No kung-fu grip? Then why even make the film? The point is, there is nothing of value in this franchise save for its sentimentality, which is the very thing they didn’t include. Not to mention It looked like a shot-for-shot remake of “Team America” without the puppets or the funny – they even blew up the Eiffel Tower!
Fun spectacles don’t have to be devoid of intelligence. “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “The Dark Knight”, and “Iron Man” have proved that. I just don’t understand how a project like this could get past the pitch; you’d think someone would say “no” at the first mention of a rust missile or “accelerator suit”.
The studio must be showing another trailer in Texas, one which explicitly explains who the villain is. When Texans see the Eiffel Tower attacked, they stand up and bray enthusiastically.
If Abrans or Cameron’s names were in the credits, this would be a completely different movie, a good movie. I am sorry, but if even the elite military needs to strap into wanna be iron man suits, we are in trouble. There is a better, more realistic, movie that can be made. This is not it. Just because you are a big budget action flick, you should strive to be more, like a Dark Knight or an Iron Man. Both of those movies work because they set themselves in a realistic frame and expanded from there. From this trailer G.I. Joe decide no one will take it seriously, so they opted to go stupid, rather than smart. Also, in seeing what they have done to Cobra Commander, visually, is moronic. Cobra Commander has such a simple iconic look, and they found a way to over design it to teh point that it looks like a space alien. Now I know this is based on cartoon (although there has been really well wriiten comics books as well), and shouldnt expect the material to be treated better, but it can be.
“We’ve never faced a threat like this”
“this has only just begun”
“We’re running out of time!”
No. No. And No. You are running out of cliches.
If this p.o. complete s. falls less than 70% in the second weekend it will be a miracle.
And the TRANSFORMERS 2 movie looks so much more intelligent and classy than this right? I really don’t see a lick of difference quality wise between the two franchises. They are both based on toys, and they are both made to be fun films for young audiences and those who still are willing to hjust go for the ride. Not EVERYTHING needs to be all dark and serious ala DARK KNIGHT. But again, it seems some have already made up their minds based on things they were told or personal prejudice against the director. FIne. Don’t go. Do everything you can to convince people it isn’t fun. Sit there with your arms folded in anger over the images that play out on the screen when the trailer shows. The fact is, that EXACRT same trailer with different names in the credits would have had the same people who are trolling this thread spouting hate, cheering the cool factor. Why does everything need to be a zero sum love it or hate it thing with these people?
Hate. Opinions are like “assh—s. It certainly appears like everyone has one. I am totally fed up with all of you. Go away and play with yourselves.
I am saying it now that G.I. Joe will be the biggest bomb of the summer. The trailer is too lame for words.
I saw the trailer before Star Trek and the audience was into it big time.
Lame. Where are Cobra Commander and Destro?
The suits are way more like a M.A.S.K. thing than GI Joe. I echo the Transformers talk. What a disappointment
Ka-boom. CGI’s a mixed blessing, isn’t it! Great visuals, but they now keep remaking the same movie. Over and over again. Kaboom. Yawn.
Looks dumb as f…
but it’s high concept, so it will have a good opening weekend, will probably gross a significant amount in the US, will have good return in Asia but will get killed in the european market (except Russia).
what a lame trailer, though…
I took a group of 14-year-old boys to see Star Trek (which they universally loved). Not one of them has any interest in seeing GI Joe after seeing the trailer. Not one. Some of said they “might” see Transformers 2 (my bet is they will). Every one of them wants to see Star Trek again.
@Rupert P.
If you want to see how to handle a sentimental property that doesn’t translate contemporarily, see “Land of the Lost”. THAT’S how you take a concept with little going for it except the fuzzy memories of a generation of kidults and turn it into something of quality. Too bad the GI Joe production team didn’t have similar talent or vision.
@Ron @Johnny Marshall
There is a BIG difference between the expectations of going to see a movie like Slumdog Millionaire or the upcoming Public Enemies, and a movie about a damn cartoon!! You shouldn’t expect that deep of plot when your dealing with the subject of an Action Figure. If so, you’re pretty jaded film watchers that obviously just want to find something to complain about. I enjoy, respect, and have worked on high minded, character driven stories with serious or historical subject matter. There’s time for those, and then there are times where i just want to see shit blow up!! Stop being such snobs!
