Santa Fe, NM, May 15 – New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson announced a new collaboration between Robert Redford and the State of New Mexico that is currently referred to as “Sundance in New Mexico.” The initiative will partner with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the New Mexico Film Office to create and expand upon training programs in film, arts, and the environment. These programs will be designed specifically for New Mexico’s Native American and Hispanic filmmakers. The Governor was joined by Mr. Redford at a news conference today at the State Capitol in Santa Fe.
“This marks a new level of commitment on the part of Bob Redford and my administration in supporting the underrepresented voices in our culture, to job creation through the arts, and to the power of partnerships built on mutual goals and aspirations,” said Governor Richardson. “The Redford and Sundance names are held in high esteem around the globe, and are synonymous in most people’s minds with innovation in the arts, advocacy of the environment, and public policy reflecting both. This is a tremendous opportunity for New Mexico’s Native American and Hispanic filmmakers, and for the state as a whole.”
“My love of New Mexico goes back many, many years,” said Robert Redford. “My commitment to this state began with The Milagro Beanfield War.”
Sundance in New Mexico will be based at historic Los Luceros in Northern New Mexico, a cultural treasure located along the Rio Grande that is owned and operated by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. In use as early as 1350 by the Tewa people of Pfioge Pueblo, Los Luceros ultimately was pivotal in the development of commerce and government in New Mexico.
“We are pleased that this collaboration will allow the Department to fulfill its dual mission of protecting the state’s cultural heritage, while providing educational programs that will benefit the people of New Mexico,” said Stuart Ashman, Secretary of the Department of Cultural Affairs.“During these tough economic times, it is imperative to create partnerships which allow film and arts initiatives to not just survive, but to flourish,” said Lisa Strout, Director of the New Mexico Film Office. “This opportunity is an honor and a gift to the State of New Mexico.”
The costs for Sundance in New Mexico will be covered with existing appropriations for the operation of Los Luceros.

haha, it’s like the south park episode where redford takes Sundance to Southpark
How long before Paris Hilton takes over this one?
Great news. Richardson has done a great job in New Mexico. I’ve got a sister in Taos. Might finally make the trip out for this.
Well, someone finally noticed that hispanics and native americans are the same thing.
Valerie is Right – Hispanics are Native Americans.
Native Americans and Hispanics are the same to ignorant people who know nothing of history and genealogy.
Native Americans are Native Americans/
and Hispanics are mixed with Jewish or with Spaniard or with White, so learn something before you spout off as you were an expert.
I’m Hispanic and my mother is white and Spaniard and my father Jewish and Native American and Spaniard.
That doesn’t make me a Native American.
Don’t label people when you know not what you speak of!!
Bill Richardson is an unctuous parasite. And Valerie, yes, everyone gets it. With that kind of logic, we could all be unwinding history and original land claims back to the Big Bang. On with your reconquista.
As all you trolls know, indigenous Americans, or Native Americans, don’t use the term “indian”, and aren’t a minority in These United States that we started, starting with our George Washington. Most were British occupation and Dutch occupation citizens during those occupying empires, as well as French and Spanish. Most are every neighbor across The USA. And most are affiliated with The CIA and other USA intelligence agencies in some remarkable capacity.
Mr. Redford doesn’t tell it like it is. Mr. Redford’s a scared little boatshit just like the installed Obama. The boatshit minority Democrats don’t want a eurasian in office these days because they know they’re on their way out, or dead. But, it will happen to ALL BOATSHIT. So just relax and enjoy the show.
Mr. Richardson undsterstands the value of courting Hollywood period. The state has an agressive tax rebate structure and are building new studios, not to mention the growing creative community. Hollywood is sitting courside and watching the ever changing game. With all of our Latino talent it is a shame that we lost out on a solid opportunity to host a film festival like this. Kuddos to Mr. Richardson and Mr. Redford. Those of us that understand will go and make money…The rest can twitter to see if Paris or Prez shows up… Not to mention that the Gov hosts great parties.
Bill Richardson has done a great job in NM? obviously you don’t live there. he’s about as honest and useful as a snake-oil salesman.
New Mexico is a great place to shoot – excellent resources and solid crews
Governor Richardson has done a great job setting up an industry for the state – outside of that, he’s extremely corrupt, but all together, he has benefitted us
Feels like Native Americans and Hispanic Americans not wanted in Utah.
