Fortunately for the agency, he’s not in hiding anymore. UTA is different from a lot of the big agencies: it has a book department but not a publishing department. Which means the tenpercentery’s strategy is not to compete but to partner with publishing agents to rep authors and their books. In this case, UTA will be working with NYC literary uberagent Andrew Wylie.

Ha, he just went back into hiding
…and this is news…why, exactly? A guy who’s only famous for going into hiding after writing a book that the Ayatolla deemed heresy like 15 years ago (and maybe for dating Padma Lakshmi afterwards) warrants a post on DHD why?
Big whoop-de-doo for UTA. Way to sign a guy who hasn’t done anything of importance for the better part of a generation. Who’s next, “It” from I Love Money 2?!
There is insight into life and the modern world from his books: if you try to adapt them or even read them with an intent of gaining something for your life you’ll find the same sense of mystery that is found as when you think about why people still eat at the Ivy.
Midnight’s Children could be an amazing miniseries for one of the cable networks.
give me a break!
Salman Rushdie is a sell-out
The ‘poor victim’ has made millions off of victimizing himself, despite the fact that he’s actually a very poor writer and his insights are clumsy, at best
Overall, Rushdie is a construction of neo-cons and politicos who wanted to bring more negative attention to Iran and the Middle East, by way of a whining writer who dates super models
Good for you UTA – why don’t you add Hirsi Ali and Geert Wilders while you’re at it…
He’s only one of the best writers of his generation, whose name and opinion actually means something to people…whatthe is right, why are you posting this Nikki?
I’ll wager that all the Rushdie snarks are from people who’ve never even read his novels, much less his lastest “The Enchantress of Florence,” which is masterful – and mesmerizing – literature.
But then this is Hollywood. Read a book? An ACTUAL book? LOL.
UTA books department is weak. Period. They have a reputation for not returning calls; for not fostering young, fresh talent. So they landed another big fish. Okay. But really, how many books is Rushdie going to write that are at all interesting on a literary level over the next ten years; and furthermore, that’ll spawn a good film? Rushdie is, alas, a bore.
Personally, I think No Country was highly overrated. Will The Road make a good movie? No. A child could have seen that Revolutionary Road would is not, nor ever could be, a movie. Literary books do NOT translate onto film; only commercial books make good movies.
UTA books should focus more on landing books that actually make good movies — and not famed authors so that the head of the books dept can take Rushdie out to dinner to fulfill his collegiate literary aspirations.
the uta book department always returns MY calls–I guess they just don’t want to talk to you, whatevs! And from your bitter attitude, I can’t blame them. just keep reading those bad books–it seems to be working wonders for you…
