Its so obvious on so many levels that this was scripted.
Before everyone starts saying that EM was in on it. No way he would let Cohen put his ass in his face and then storm off like a humiliated *****. Maybe he thought Cohen was going to do something else like land in his lap and then Sasha did his thing. But even that is unlikely because who would trust Cohen.
If scripted and Eminem was part of it: decent entertainment. If unscripted: best. Thing. Ever.

This was clearly scripted. No way in a crowded room filled with 1000 people that Bruno just happened to land on the one rapper with a reputation for getting easily pissed off at the MTV Movie Awards AND for being homophobic.
I attended the MTV Movie Awards back in 1996 or so when Ben Stiller & Janeane Garafalo hosted. Mel Gibson was there to promote some horrible dreck (Lethal Weapon 4?) and was scheduled to present the movie of the year. Garafalo pigeonholed Gibson backstage for an “interview” which was being broadcast to the crowd, and Garafalo asked Gibson question after question how her performances had inspired HIS career. He clearly had no idea who she was and was mystified about why she thought he was some big fan of hers. The crowd was roaring, and eventually Mel realized she was taking the piss, so he jumped up and stormed out like a crybaby, without ever appearing onstage to present. At the end of the night, Stiller had to hand out the award, and when the show aired 2 weeks later (what? It’s not live? No way!), all mention of Mel Gibson EVER being at the awards was removed, including the interview and all mentions of him by other nominees and shots of him backstage, etc.
If Eminem wasn’t in on that Bruno joke, MTV would never have aired it. It would have gone straight down the memory hole… they can’t afford to piss off a major star like him, especially when he’s just come out of rehab and is restarting his career (which makes them boucoup dollars, with his “behind the scenes of Eminem’s new video” programs and whatnot). Additionally, truly making him mad would also alienate Dre and 50 Cent, which they would never dare do.
Most likely Em saw Borat, thought it was funny, and when they approached him about doing this bit, he did it thinking that it would be a funny riff on his supposed homophobia. It was weird, though, because most people in the audience seemed to have NO IDEA what was going on, or who Bruno was, etc. Too early.

Scripted or not, pretty damn funny and far more entertaining than the joke of “talent” that sit there and feign relevancy on these “Empty”-Vee” shows.
Sacha Baron Cohen at least was FUNNY whereas Howard Stern’s similar “Fart Man” thing years ago was only pathetic.
Maybe Eminem wasn’t in on it but no way in hell this wasn’t rehearsed with a stand in for the mark. The wire rig is computer controlled within 1/16 inch of the actors life.

I was frankly amazed at how crude the show got. There was a stretch that included Rimes singing “I jizzed in my pants” and that stupid Most Desirable Sound Editor saying “Suck my dick” (repeatedly) and air humping for like forever. I’m not prudish but I found myself wondering what primary demos the advertisers were sold.

The show is no longer taped, Winston. Last night’s incident happened live. Not saying it wasn’t necessarily scripted, but there was no way to edit it out.

The set up started with a camera pan to Eminem in his seat to orient the viewer.
Eminem’s bodyguards didn’t manhandle Sacha, they did a 3 Stooges-like prolonged bumble to swing him aside (and someone swung him back over Eminem as part of the ballet).
MTV had a camera crew at the back of the room to capture Eminem storming up the aisle, and he appears to have been miked at the time.
Think about it. If not for this set piece, no one would be talking about that tediously unfunny show at all.
Why was Eminem even performing at a movie awards show? Oh yeah, new CD to promote.
So glad this happened — Eminem revealed a humorless, petulant little pussy.

I don’t think it was scripted. The guy hit something in the air that threw his balance off and told the people to land him cuz he was flailing around upside down. No way he could have landed that perfect on Eminem even if he were trying. I had to rewatch it to see this though. They really shouldn’t do sh*t like this on live television. WTF is wrong with MTV? Didn’t they learn from the Britney/Janet/Justin fiascos? Guess not. I guess you could sa it made for good television in a way. But they owe Eminem a big apology. Of course, the way Eminem puts people on blast, it’s kind of sad that he can’t take as good as he gives.
Everything you see on TV is staged, planned or prepared by SOMEONE. The question is does that someone let everyone in on what’s really going down?
Shady probably agreed to a stunt for publicity’s sake, SBC definitely staged the “flight” in and being lowered but ain’t no way Em knew he was gonna have another grown man’s ass in his face with millions watching. I can hear Bruno taking a cue from Shaq, “Shady, tell me how my ass tastes?”
Em’s always playin’ the hardnosed rapper with street cred that’ll play pranks on others to make them feel stupid. S.B. Cohen is a brilliant comic because he planned a way to make a dick like Em, truly the butt of a joke.
And the notion that Em makes MTV so much money that they wouldn’t risk pissing him off is laughable. Em is a product, MTV is a network. The product will ALWAYS need the network. Last I checked Slim Shady, Dre and 50 have been missing from the MTV scene for a few years and the network is still goin strong.

The show was lazily crude beyond the pale. The sound editor bit (compare THAT to Janet and Justin and ask yourselves why no one is talking about it today) and the stupid singing of Samberg’s shorts should be grounds enough for a flotilla of make-goods.

The difference here was this was a LIVE broadcast. The Mel Gibson incident that you refer to was taped days before. MTV would have had to gone to a black screen for 5 minutes here, that was not going to happen. I don’t think this was scripted because Eminem comes off looking like a complete FOOL. That still picture will haunt him forever. He NEEDS this type of publicity? I don’t think so! Bottom line- I watched it live and was buckled over laughing!

The fact is that Sasha Baron Cohen went to Cambridge, and is one of the smartest and most creative comedians ever. He has fooled many of the worlds most prominent politicians and journalists, totally baffling them with questions that only he would have the balls to ask, making most of them look ridiculous. But I have to say thanks, it is because of people like you that allow shows like Ali G to exist. If we all got it, there would be no one to laugh at.

I don’t think anyone disputes the fact that it was clearly staged. The main question seems to be how far Eminem thought they would be taking the joke.
For all the obvious reasons we can point to that it was staged by SBC, there aren’t really to explain why Eminem would agree to such a stunt.
Does it make sense that he would agree to be part of a joke? Of course. But to be immortalized in such an embarrassing photo op? Absolutely not.
Even when you assume it was staged with his full approval, he comes off looking like an idiot.

I agree the stunt was hilarious, but scripted or unscripted, I don’t think Eminem was unjustified in being pissed and walking. Put yourself in his seat for a second. That couldn’t have been an enjoyable view and he just spent a considerable amount of time cleaning up his act for his record release. I wish Cohen had punked someone who really deserved a healthy dose of public humiliation, like Ashton Kutcher or John Mayer.
As for MTV networks, they lost touch with what’s cool over a decade ago. Anyone who thinks Daisy of Love is entertainment deserves a big ass in the face themselves.

SBC’s whole comedy doesn’t work if everyone involved is in on the joke, whether he is playing Ali G or Borat or Bruno. The only SBC would do a stunt like this would be if there was an unwitting subject — the challenge here was to pull it off in a room full of people who knew who his identity (unlike his typical subjects). He pulled it off. He’s at the height of his career, so he had the network’s backing. Risky to do this with Eminem, but SBC is all about risk.
Absolutely scripted: why does the camera zoom in on Eminem when Bruno is still struggling? And why, at that moment, are Eminem and his entourage the only ones with and “concerned look”, while everyone else is laughing. Finally, if something were to happen, you would have staffers and security rushing in… Obvious. Good fun though.

I’ve seen the Ali G Show. It’s an American classic. Brilliant. Dressing up in a costume and disguising your voice to trick people. So original, so clever. I never get tired of it. I love the same thing every episode. Stuttering John couldn’t hold a candle to Sasha Cohen. The man is the king of comedy.
I hope he’s just as successful selling plots of land in on that infomercial that comes on after midnight. You know, the one with PONCH from CHIPS that’s been running for two years now. “Act now, plots are going fast. First, they launched the now infamous “meinspace” campaign. Bloggers around the world embedded the video THEY had provided. It was hilarious *if* you are bilingual. So the jokes needed some explaining. Before I got to write it up, they had removed it.
Gimme a break. Are they fighting in-house or what’s up with that? You put your viral marketing campaign in gear, you gotta live with it. So think *before* you make your moves.

Meanwhile, youtube is busy removing that video and any clip related to the event. Viacom must have their interns working around the clock policing youtube and writing up complaints. So lame. IOW popculture and its demands seem to be at odds with current copyright laws that cover even the tiniest clip.
A bit of generosity could save tons of dollars and people wouldn’t be so t’d off. That black screen tells them “Viacom is a party pooper”. Thanks so much.

When I first saw that pic MTV’s video player selected to represent the Eminem SBC clip I thought for sure that someone had hacked Nikki’s site & uploaded videos from YouPorn/RedTube/whatever the heck those UGC sites for porn/adult video sharing are called.
Turns out it’s MTV’s own video. Oy.
The YouTube player clip Nikki had up earlier was not nearly as disturbing/creepy/yuck-inducing (blurry looking angel dude hovering over something).
MTV’s video player image is NSFW (not safe for work)& also not safe for younger viewers. How does MTV expect the online community to make it go viral if they get busted looking at what first glance looks like porn while trying to share it?
Video clip itself is just plain dumb, & who cares whether/how much stunt was staged? It is also very derivative of the Fartman foo of MTV Awards circa 1992 (which was also dumb).
