I have to laugh that Variety is trumpeting 20th Century Fox “developing” a Deadpool spinoff starring Ryan Reynolds. Like duh. Everyone who saw one of the two Wolverine Easter eggs knows this. SPOILER ALERT (as I do my best geek impression): Even the critics screening back on April 29th featured a final post-credits
ending of Deadpool’s arm reaching out from the rubble of the final battle, and grabbing his severed head. The head’s eyes open wide, and the mouth — which had been fused shut earlier in a significant plot point: Deadpool was a wiseass and Colonel Striker hated his jokes so sewed his mouth shut — is open, and says “SHHHHH!” Deadpool is a fan-fave character, but his treatment in Wolverine is highly non-canon; he gets given all the powers of every mutant for the final battle. This ending suggests a more accurate sequel since, in the comics, Deadpool signs up for mutant duty in order to cure his cancer, and this is unmentioned in the film. As for the other Easter egg, it’s Wolverine in Japan, possibly to kickstart a sequel based on the Frank Miller Wolverine comic series that fans love.

I thought you said you weren’t a geek?!>
how about a Spoiler alert?
honestly, whether variety or dhd reports this non-news first is of little importance to most people.
what the last shot in the season’s biggest movie is, is another story….
I’m not sure if this post required a spoiler alert or a fangirl alarm.
That post is pure geek, Nikki…you’ve certainly done a 180.
Did you write this or did the geek who covers comic-con write this one, yo. ??? You rock Miss Nikki though, thank you for all that you do hun.

As long as there is as much humor as there is action, this film has the potential to be a huge hit. Given the right role, Reynolds is a draw.
FOX should really have a comic book creator consultant on this film, like Deadpool’s co-creator Fabian Nicieza.
I saw this movie, and the Deadpool scene you mention wasn’t in it. The post credit scene I saw featured Wolverine in a bar in Japan. Am I crazy?
Now I’m even more pissed that I got the *other* ending — and I’m not even all that big a fan of Deadpool! I just hope that in a Deadpool movie, he loses all of the extra powers beyond Wolverine’s healing factor. Too powerful toherwise. But the built-in blades are an acceptable non-powered upgrade.

PS: I wonder if Nikki has an intern, and if so, did s/he write that post?
PPS: Don’t get me wrong, Wolvie was a highly enjoyable movie, but Watchmen is still the best superhero movie since The Dark Knight.
did someone hack into dhd?
Will it be set in the 1970s like X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE?
If it’s set in the current day without explanation, DEADPOOL will remind me of MORK & MINDY and Wolverine will be the new Fonzie.
I guess Wolverine already is the new Fonzie…
Nikki –
FYI: Some nerd has hacked into your website and is posting under your name.
The funniest thing about all of this to me is that it seems transparent that Fox was caught with its pants down when significant amounts of their early negative feedback centered on their abysmal treatment of the fan favorite Deadpool character in the movie…so this stuff got tacked on to try to rectify that. Maybe they can make it right but it might be good to have this sort of approach GOING INTO the movie instead of in the damage control phase.
im all for movie epilogues like what Wolverine did or what Iron Man did. but what i dont like is how 2 different version were used and only one per theater (distributed randomly?) because then ending to the movie indicates that someone may have seen the end to there character, yet if you saw one epilogue, you know its not the case. i just think that they should have either used both in all theaters or just one. i mean, i love that they used 2 to set up two different movies, but so many people missed out on one or the other that i just think they will be clueless because they saw no logical set up after Wolverine.
When did your culture become so god damn stupid? Educated adults discussing mindless teenage fare as though it signified something, as though it had actual meaning and value to a mature, rational adult. It began with E.T. and it’s been downhill ever since.
Another misfire from FOX…bring it on!
Jesus. I’m shocked no one has pointed out the obvious here. Look at those damn abs! If those muscles are inversely proportioned to the gray matter behind those baby brown eyes than Ryan R is one dumb motherfucker.
…however, for the record I thought ‘Just Friends’ was hilarious.
Mike,
The Deadpool scene was at the very end after ALL the credits.
Watchmen is still the best superhero movie since “The Dark Knight.”
So it was the best superhero movie in less than a year?
Any Deadpool movie is going to suffer approximately the same fate as the Elektra movie: a marginal character who looks more popular because of its appearance next to an actually popular character. Marvel is going to burn out their audience by pushing characters like this.
Mookie: Yep, IMO, Watchmen’s the best superhero movie since Dark Knight. I didn’t want to include Hancock because, well, a straw man in the sucky direction and Hellboy 2 was both underwhelming in general and a total letdown from the first Hellboy.
But okay, Watchmen was also waaaaay better than Iron Man, and I lurrved Iron Man.
Aaaaaanyway: A possible Deadpool movie can’t possibly be compared to Elektra as, well, Ryan Reynolds is the perfect actor to play Deadpool and, well, even the mere *idea* of casting the whitebread Jennifer Garner as the very Greek Elektra was an Epic Fail to begin with. But Rob Bowman was saddled with Johnson’s miscasting of that character for an otherwise gorgeously-shot remake of the mediocre Eddie Murphy flick The Golden Child.
Finally, I love Nikki’s addition to the Spoiler Alert “as I do my best geek impression.” Great sense of humor about our teasing!

Just saw wolverine, and I gotta say, this movie blew chunks. This wasn’t much of a Jackman vehicle, more of a tour of Top Secret facilities around the world that have the security level of a Jiffy Lube.
I agree that the notion of a Deadpool movie seems like a nonstarter. It’s a fun character in the books but I’d put his built in appeal or recognition far below that of something like Watchmen for example. They had a good opportunity to make much more and better use out of the character in this movie than they did though, which I think many people point out rightly as disappointing.
As for ‘Bewildered,’ there is plenty of pandering going on with a lot of today’s fare but that hardly justifies your smug party pooper sour grapes. There were plenty of bad movies made before ET, a movie that pretty much divides partisans into heart of stone/Spielberg haters and everyone else.
I’m waiting for a reboot of HOWARD THE DUCK,
I have to agree with some of the others. This has got to be a DHD hack, right? This post is knee-deep in geek.
Unbelievable that Deadpool (a sorry non-starter in the Marvel Universe) is getting a movie, when a psychedelic Cell/Matrix/Barbarella film adapatation of classic Marvel character Doctor Strange is swirling in the astral plane waiting for its mega-adaptation…I mean, a 420 superhero film…come ON!
Dear “Bewildered”–
actually it did not begin with “E.T.”— the action-fantasy epics began with Homer’s Odyssey– so, take it up with the ancient greeks.
if it bothers you, feel free to contribute something to the culture.
