Disney’s marketing machine got the bright idea to invite Hollywood agency assistants last night to an advance screening of the Touchstone Pictures comedy The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds (who hosted the screening and can be seen in the above photo). The packed house in Century City included assistants from WMA, ICM, UTA, CAA, and APA. “The guys laughed throughout the film,” my spy tells me about the overwhelmingly male crowd. The pic, which opens June 19th, is about a high-powered book editor (Bullock) who, facing deportation, declares she’s engaged to her unsuspecting assistant (Reynolds) whom she’s tormented for years. He agrees to the charade. Hilarity supposedly ensues. But the best ever tormented assistant pic is Swimming With Sharks. (Because it was written by a tormented Hollywood assistant.)

UGH! Hasn’t anyone learned their lesson about betting on Sandra Bullock? Let her wither already!
Were the agents forced to roll their own calls and fetch their own coffee and dry cleaning during this event? How could Disney have been so thoughtless?
What’s with all the anti-women Rom Coms?
speak for yourself, Z. Barnum. Sandra Bullock has a lot of fans out here in the midwest.
Long live the assistants! Coffee, copying, answering phones, marriage to keep your boss in the country… all part of the gig.
Good to see so many smiles on people who work hard, are under stress and are typically treated crappy by their bosses. Nice move on Disney’s part.
Re assistant movies, Swimming with the Sharks was great. Devil wears Prada was pretty good as well. And also, Gods and Monsters.
Hmmm a room full of mini agents are entertained by an industry indulgent Sandra Bullock comedy. “Howard, you’ve done it again!”
Tools being used as promotional tools. Lovely!
Wow! Look at all the minorities! Why aren’t there any white male assistants? Someone really needs to do something about this, guess they just can’t find any. Oh wait, there’s one, there’s another, oh, the tint on my screen was on. The number of blacks in the oval office is equal to the number of blacks in this photo.
Wow.Even APA got an invite, but Paradigm didn’t make the guest list?
Bullock’s character tormenting someone who looks like Ryan Reynolds? I’m a straight guy and even I think Reynolds is good-looking; too good-looking to be “tormented”. Good luck to Disney. I get the feeling that their hype machine can’t save this horrible-sounding pic – unless, of course, we all get to see it for free.
This is a serious, non-snark question. Has Ryan Reynolds ever been in a good movie? Not passable, good.
It is amazing that heterosexual men identify/care about this fratboy automaton. What exactly makes this guy talented? I mean, he might have a slick lifestyle outside of a movie theatre, but who cares? I mean, it’s been a while now…has he ever been in a movie worth remembering/caring about?
The movie was surprisingly funny. Definitely Ryan Reynolds’ best comedic performance since Van Wilder. And Sandra was great. It’s a 100 times better than it looks. Obviously a lame premise, but they did a good job with it.
Awkward! I’m sure Ryan sat down for the photo and darted for the exit as soon as the lights went down.
Cool idea to screen this for assistants though. Kudos to Disney’s marketing.
There’s another movie about Hollywood Assistants that’s about to hit the festival circuit. Joe Mantegna, Jane Seymour and Stacy Keach are in it, and the trailers look pretty damn good. (Full disclosure: A friend of mine wrote and directed the film, but I wouldn’t post about it if I didn’t think it was great.)
Appropriately, it’s titled “The Assistants.”

zowie! What a great bunch of good lookin’ men.
Reynolds is a genuinely funny and charismatic guy – but come on – funny guys are supposed to be doughy shlubs, not Adonises. Get out of the gym and get into the krispy kreme, muscles. Bill Murray wouldn’t be Bill Murray if he had a frickin’ 8 pack.
I once interviewed for an assistant job at Ixtlan, Oliver Stone’s company, and Dan Halsted asked me ‘if my parents could help me out’ because the job paid so low.
So where are all the female assistants? Women outnumber men in the asssitant role by far, but I guess they were pushed out of the photo op. Assuming, of course, that they were even let into the theater!
Male, male, male, male, male, male, male, male, male, male…….. Get the EEOC on the phone.
Quite an unattractive group of guys.
And, Z Barnum must be a snubbed agent or something. Bullock is fantastic and overdue for a pic. Ryan Reynolds is a whiny bore, indistinguishable from that other Ryan. Hopefully that guy won’t drag down her movie like that miscast guy in the Julia Roberts film. Then the cacophony of morons will cluster and squawk about Bullock not being able to open a film anymore. LOL.
SWIMMING WITH SHARKS also did an assistant screening if i recall. And they raffled off Kevin Spacey to be an assistant for you for the day. Does anyone else remember that?
Ryan looks miserbale. He’s already pushing out of his seat in this picture on his way to the door.
This screening (and re-planting the rain forest) show that Disney, whatever can be said about them as a business model, still has the best exploitation department in the biz. But the really great thing about confining all the assistants in one screening is that it kept them from saving tables for their bosses in the Century City shopping mall food court. Do this more often so the rest of us can find a seat!
Hey Nothing Changes, you mean white male, white male, white male, white male, white male, white male. I mena seriously. Guess Hollywood needs a Rooney Rule too.
