UPDATE: I’m told there were 10 staffers sacked, including associate publisher Rose Einstein and art director Deeann Hoff and internatonal editor Chad Williams, and the two luxury brand reps in LA & in NY. As one of my tipsters explains: “Don’t miss the significance of the layoff of Deann Hoff — she is married to [with] Dave Morgan, deputy editor, so if she’s out, that’s very serious since Dave would not have let her go without a fight.” The layoffs started early this morning and continued all day. How they’re going to continue to put out a paper, I have no idea. Unless this will soon be an online-only publication.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Can’t say this is a surprise and the lack of comments on this news sure speaks to that. Mrs. Einstein has now been let go from two trades and who can say if it was the economy, the lack of ads in the ‘Reporter’ or her Variety-cum-THR connections just unraveled. Seems these very people were wishing their laid-off comrades well just six months ago. It’s awful to see what has happened to a trade that just 4 years ago was getting a Walk of Fame star and had survived 75 years. Elder abuse is sad to see. Best of luck to them all.
CONTINUE to put out a paper? I wasn’t aware they still did.
Idiots and Morons running the business. Eric Mika in Asia doing nothing, Greg Farrar to scared to do anything. Any of you boys have balls? I am so glad left you for Variety.
i would not read the HR if they mailed it to me for free. Such bias towards the studios and conflicts of interest in almost every story.
That being said, everything they publish (almost) is on their website for free now. Who would pay for it? I think it and Variety will die and 1 publication will spring up in its place.
You’re running them out of business Ms. Finke!
Any hope they dumped that out-of-touch snob, Kirk Hunicutt?
T’would be nice to think that Mr. Morgan looked out for everyone and not just close and huddled faves. Morgan-Hoff union will be fine in the long-term as Nielsen assumes that 1 ‘lifer’ is less expensive than two, as they used to say at Conde Nast, and women always get nixed first in these boys clubs, no matter how hard they lobby and strategize. Wonder if Mika and Eczema Betty are invited to the next holiday sha-bang?
Damn shame about Rose Einstein, she’s a genuinely decent person.
Rose is an incredibly decent person. So is Chad Williams … very smart guy who is web savvy and works hard. Someone should scoop him up. And DeeAnn’s talent with graphic design would be an asset to any publication.
The time has come to go completely online except to tap advertising for awards print issues like the Oscars, Emmy’s, etc. But even that may not satisfy the bottom line. It would get rid of a heck of a lot of overhead and keep the brand which is strong both here and abroad.
Stop knocking the trades. There are serious journalists at both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety … most, not all – a particular union reporter comes to mind – but most are doing the best they can in very difficult economic circumstances.
Hang tough, guys … I hope you all land on your feet … and soon.
To set the record straight, Dave Morgan and Deann Hoff are NOT married.Just a wonderful long term relationship. Dave is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met and very very caring and warm to everyone.
Have some compassion for those who lost their jobs and wish them luck, instead of making fun of people who have been working their ass off to try to save this newspaper!!
A long string of incompetence going back to wonder boy John Kilcullen started this mess. Sure the economy delivered the final blow, but the handwriting has been on the wall for years. When THR still had a chance to reinvent itself this nincompoop was in charge. Never understood why Bob Dowling, who disliked Kilcullen, had to go. VNU clearly backed the wrong horse. Then. again, THR has been so conflicted for so long, why would anyone ever want to read it?
This is a serious question: Who is left at the Hollywood Reporter? Can anyone name the staffers now? There must be just a handful.
Eric Mika should have been the one to go first. The fact that guy still pulls a paycheck is amazing. The guy has lost in every way since he was made publisher, he lost(wasted) Nielsen’s money, lost marketshare, lost good employees. He has no relationships and cares not to make any. I think who ever is running nielsen needs to wake up and smell the coffee, that he has completely destroyed a once great brand as well as lot of good people’s livelihoods. Along with their blood, sweat and tears. I just wonder what kind of dirt Mika has on people at Nielsen that he can stay employed.
I don’t gather that anyone still at THR is being made fun of here on this comment board, aside from the hood-eyed, sad sad divorcee named Mika and an out-to-lunch parent company who’ve wiped their furry, plump-cheeked hides with a once-great brand. If THR dies, all execs jump ship to Nielsen and that’s that. Any former THR staffers who were incredible workers (about 98%) deserve employment from the community and I think the town knows it. Ad sales seem to be non-existent and everyone can see and feel it. The sales dept. is luckier than a clover field for my two cents. They’ve been Teflon throughout. What gives?
it’s always sad when good people are rewarded for their dedication with a pink slip.
I knew it was bad when they started out scourcing with my job first (reception). I was there for 5 years started out in editorial and became their receptionist. I got laid off and it was just brutal. I have seen good people get terminated and struggle now because of it. It is hard to bounce back from a job like this. All of this is a terrible shock to me and I am sad to see good people go. We were like a strong family at one point that is now broken.
Don’t blame Mika. The culprit is Nielsen.
As an ex-employee of THR, I was one of the few who left on good terms before Mr. Dowling had moved on. I can remember when the paper was truly a strong product that I was proud to say I worked for during its heyday. When i the parent company was known as BPI, the strength of a strong “familial group” helped THR become a respected trade. It sure has gone downhill since. The outsourcing killed it all…
my time at THR was memorable; it was where i learned how to sell. yes, the tactics could be very ‘tough love’ at times, but the two components were doled out in equal measure. the Bob Dowling-Lynne Segall combo produced results and created a lot of great sellers, many of whom took their talents elsewhere once these two pillars left the brand. it is heartbreaking to see that all the hard work of those who helped turn around THR’s rep and make it a success has been squandered by people with no connection to the brand other than its appearance on their paycheck. Very sad. But will always cherish the years spent there and know that it was truly great for that moment in time.
Having worked with DeAnn and Chad, I’m sad to see them go. I really think Dave Morgan should have gotten the boot before either of them, though. The fact that Dave has a TV in his office tuned to ESPN for no valid work-related reason speaks volumes about how light his daily workload is. He also is one of the remaining pieces of “dead wood” at the paper who is grossly overpaid and offers little output…
Dave Morgan, all of the deputy editors, none of them do a damn thing but promote themselves while all the veterans who worked to make the Reporter a great paper have been gotten rid of. Nielsen has zero interest in editorial quality and naively holds onto the best bull slingers. They’ll be sorry in the end because the paper has been so devalued that it is worthless.
