CBS and the TV Academy had planned to air the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on September 20th,. But then the NFL came out with its Sunday schedule, and it turned out CBS had a football doubleheader on that day. Not to mention that NBC had the mother of all football rivalries skedded opposite the Emmys: New York Giants vs Dallas Cowboys. Ergo the date change to September 13th. Now, CBS and the TV Academy have changed the date yet again -- BACK to September 20th. "After we announced plans for September 13, MTV informed us they were locked into the same day for the Video Music Awards, with venue and sponsorship agreements in place. We had the flexibility to move; they didn't," said Jack Sussman, Executive Vice President, Specials, Music & Live Events, CBS Entertainment. "It's best for the industry and the audience that these events not compete against each other. Huge thanks to the Television Academy and Don Mischer for quickly moving mountains to make this happen. If the Emmy broadcast has as much excitement as the scheduling of the date, viewers are in for an unforgettable event."

Carl Icahn Now Wants ALL Of Lionsgate
How does CBS manage to change the date of the Emmy’s and not know that the VMA’s are scheduled for that day?
I submit that if more than one person was involved in this decision, then they would have to be considered among the most incompetent people to walk the earth.
of the 365 days in a year, MTV has 2 noteworthy events/shows. one of them is the VMA’s. they managed to check TV Guide and see that football was on, but nobody knew that VMA’s were on? I understand that the average age of a CBS viewer is 84 years old, but they should have someone on staff under 50 for situations like this.
if you were involved in this decsion, you are an idiot. not a bad person, just comicly awful at your job.
Fuck the VMA’s (not frak). CBS should’ve told MTV, move your awards, since you pretty much have abandoned broadcasting music videos of any kind anymore. Emmys = minor, bush league. And that’s even before they nominate the SOSO’s (Same Old Same Olds) on July 16, the usual suspects, instead of abandoning their hard-on for HBO.
Embarrassing, ATAS.
As long as they have Neil Patrick Harris as a host, the Emmy ratings should be great.
I know I’ll be watching the Dallas-Giants game and looking at this blog for the Emmy winners.
Wow, The emmys are going to get killed, Giants vs Cowboys??!! Good Luck! I’ll be at the game
Good call moving the Emmys. Lord knows I’d rather watch the Giants play Dallas and I think there’s a decent chance my boss’ show will be nominated.
They should have moved the Emmys to Sunday, August 30. That way there would have been no clash with the Labor Day weekend or any of the Sunday Night Football games on NBC.
As it stands now, the Emmys are going to be buried by the Giants-Cowboys game, just as last year’s Emmys show on ABC was destroyed by the Cowboys-Packers contest.

The best part is they are both owned by the same entity!
Jakeem,
Why should CBS have given in here? Why not MTVINO (MTV In Name Only)? Move your awards to 9/27 or later and yield the 9/13 spot to an awards that have been around for 35 more years than yours?
The 20th is also Rosh Hashanah
Paul:
Forget MTV. The problem for CBS is either going against NBC’s Bears-Packers game on Sept. 13th, or the Giants-Cowboys game on Sept. 20th. On either date, the Emmys show likely would be clobbered in the ratings.
As I suggested previously, the wise decision would have been to move up the Emmys to Aug. 30, the weekend before Labor Day. It’s been done before, as recently as 2006.
