There had been a Fame teaser out there. And last week the true Fame trailer debuted with The Proposal sneaked on 80+ screens. But this weekend will be the wide release.

What was great about the original was the casting. None of these kids pop off the screen. Best I can say about this trailer is, looks dated.
Who directed? Who produced? Are they under 50?
im 37 and a screenwriter in hollywood who grew up watching the original movie and the tv show pretty religeously…though ive never watched american idol, i was still excited to see the trailer, and sadly (for me) it looks like white people guessing. im not saying thats what it is mind you, its just thats how it looks. (i havn’t looked at credits yet preferring just to judge the trailer on its own merit first) Starting primarily with this tired old casting of reggie rock whatever (the utlimate white people guessing wrong…’did you know he killed someone?? ohhhhh” and kelsey grammer. both fine enough actors, but goddamit, when you first met debbie allen, this was a high energy, talented woman with a passion and a fire, and she was fresh and new and she demanded your attention…these are two old soggy flacid turds that are supposed to make older viewers (sadly, like myself i guess) feel more comfortable. well im not. i cringe at the crusty old black fella recycling his speeches from rudy, and while the speeches are always gonna be similar (and im hopeful the writers have done a great job and come up with something we can get behind) lets see someone new give them. recycling it only works in one thing…comedy. and last time i checked, the red haired gay kid Montgomery killing himself or irene cara popping a tit for some guy who basically plays a version of my uncle at thanksgiving isnt supposed to be funny.
Please let this be good…but based on casting alone, and not a single difining moment or scene in the trailer, it’s starting from behind the eight ball.
-And im not trying to be a hater…as the recipient of some terrible reviews myself, i would like to add that I loved you reggie rock in both rudy (really great movie and a terrific performance) and in surviving the game (great arms and legs blown off on an atv sequence). kelsey grammer, ive never really enjoyed your work, though i loved cheers, but also one time you almost ran me over in your car in beverly hills and when you got out to yell at me you looked so coked out i didnt even stay to respond i just wanted to get away from you because i was scared for my life…so that slant may be a little personal, but julia roberts is about the meanest woman i can imagine and i can still ist 5 things ive really enjoyed her in (though im not going to)…you, not so much.
Something’s weird, because I saw the “Fame” trailer with my family when we went to see “Up.” I remember clearly, because just at first I couldn’t tell what it was, and we were all going back and forth with “What’s this?” “I’m not sure, but it might be . . . yes, I think it is . . .”
Maybe someone made a mistake.
Looks like Hollywood taking another great movie with edge and adult themes from thirty years ago and dumbing it down to go for the Jonas brother/Zac Efron/Hannah Montana crowed.
Looks good. Too many white kids in it though. Why don’t they make the lead Latino or black or Arab for a change. Minorities make up over 60%of the population let’s start seeing that reflected in the casting beyond the token Asian or black person in the cast.
I’m excited. Of course it’ll be cheesy, but how can you be down on talented kids fighting for their (soon to be broken) dreams?
I have no horse in this race, and I tend to hate musicals, but, watching that trailer –
Fame is going to be HUGE.
@What a joke: Sorry. You may be right, but that’s clearly not going to be an issue.
Should cut first ten seconds. After that it gets good. Just wish it were a TV series because it would be such a gift to audiences to be able to see Charles “Roc” Dutton act every week. And I heat that behind the scenes, he’s a man of integrity and heart. That’s the kind of inspiration we all could use.
The original FAME is so amazing. It came on TV ONE the other night while a girlfriend and I got ready to go to the club, but we got sucked in, ditched the club and it was all about FAME that night! Remember my name! FAME!
Ummm… this trailer was 2:25 but felt like it was 10 minutes long. Boring, hard to get through, fake and trite and then another dose of boring just so we get the point. It is not just performed fake, but it feels fake. The original Fame was dark and you could feel the struggle but this one looks like some pretty kids and a cliched writer just said “Hey let’s put on a show and have a wise black dude talk us though it”.
My god what a cliche from beginning to end.
Glee looks better, really.
Is it a remake or retell? Body Electric? I’m not sure the youth of today would know how to move to that song. Good luck MGM. Its going to either propel you into the black or……
More warmed over remade Hollywood caca.
Is this why they’re paying Mary Parent $6 million per year? And you wonder why MGM is going under…. C’mon people.
Next thing you know they’ll be remaking Valley Girl… oops shut my mouth.
I just saw the original the other night on TV One too. It was just a classic. The trailer in no way makes me want to see this movie. It looks like another sequel to STEP IT UP.
I think it looks fun- I’d see it. The old Fame was released in 1980… before myself and most of the people that will see this new Fame were born.
Gotta give Hollywood credit… they certainly are dedicated to recycling…
I have no idea if this film is good or if it will do well or not, so I don’t mean any disrespect to anyone who worked on it, but these Hollywood execs make me sick with their remakes and reboots. There is tons of exceptional, original material out there and talented filmmakers to make it happen, but none of those spineless, studio a-holes want to give anyone or anything new a chance. And I’m sure there are those who would argue it’s just good business and they’re protecting their interests by using material with an already built in fan base, but I think “Land of the Lost” is evidence that there’s more to it than just remaking something. I’m just waiting for them to remake The Hangover in about 5 years because that’s seriously how cowardly and unoriginal the studios are getting these days. And yes, I’m bitter about it.
Casting is KEY to a movie like this, and the older knowns are very stodgy and dull choices (Kelsey, Roc, really?), and the new kids don’t have a shred of charisma or exceptional talent from this footage…nobody with an iota of breakout potential. They made it on the cheap tho so it will book a profit, and it looks like got some prod value up on the screen for the $ spent.
What is this, a Thursday night book club? Take ur brie and pinot and find a good docu to watch. This remake is meant to be movie-cotton-candy. And though I agree it technically looks cliche, so-already and unimaginative, so what? It’ll hit the right demo, maybe bring in a few of the old-timers and make nice bank.
Casting was left to Michael Hock…and you know the book on him, he’s got a mind of his own.
From what I have heard from inside the studio the movie is awful but what did we expect from Mary Parent and MGM? I can only guess that all the positive posts on this website are from those inside MGM trying to create a positive buzz.
Why not remake something that barked the first time it came out??? Not only was there no need to remake Fame, this looks like a hideous paint-by-numbers, watered down version. If I can easily guess the lines the actors are going to say before they say them (“And who in the world told you you were so special?”, “You did.”) then there’s something seriously wrong and terribly weak about the writing.
If someone was going to make “American Idol – The Movie” this is pretty much what I would expect the trailer to be like. Which leads me to another point. Why would I leave my house, get in my car, drive X number of miles, fight for parking, pay good money, and sit in a theater to view this film if I can see virtually the same thing for free by watching American Idol and half a dozen other so-called reality shows in the comfort of my own home?
The only reason this film got greenlit is because everybody in Hollywood wants their own High School Musical type franchise.
This film looks baaaaaad. I watch this trailer and it’s not too difficult for me to imagine Joel, Crow, and Tom Servo’s silhouette’s in the lower right corner of the screen.
“OH NO! WE’VE GOT MOVIE SIGN!!!”
