UPDATE: Norm Coleman has finally conceded, clearing the way for Al Franken to be certified as the election winner and take his U.S. Senate after 8 bitter months of legal battling over the Minnesota election. News reports say Dem leaders reserved spots for Franken on four committees which willoversee the health care overhaul and the Supreme Court nomination among other high-profile issues.
This decision by the Minnesota Supreme Court ends the recount process and affirms Al Franken’s obvious victory for the long-vacant
U.S. Senate once occupied by Norm Coleman. News reports this morning say the court rejected Republican Coleman’s legal challenge and ordered that Democrat Franken receive the election certificate he needs to assume office. It’s unclear whether Coleman will continue the legal wrangling. With Franken finally seated, Democrats will have a big enough majority (with the Senate’s two like-minded Independents) to overcome Republican filibustering. As DHD readers know, I’ve been closely following the Al Franken vs Norm Coleman race because, while showbiz talents who are also Democrats routinely raise money and campaign for political candidates, they rarely run for public office themselves. For a long while, the Saturday Night Live alum and ex-Air America radio broadcaster trailed Coleman, only to pass him in votes during the recount.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Got to love how you contradict yourself by saying that it is an “obvious victory” but then follow that up by discussing how he trailed at first until the recount. How is an election that is decided on a recount an “obvious victory”?
I wonder if there will be another SNLer running for higher office. Dennis Miller for Congress?
The court thought he was good enough, he was smart enough, and doggone it, the Minnesota people like him.
I’m not a fan of Franken, he seems to be a mean-spirited bully and all-around asshole but if he won, he won and Coleman should step aside and let him be seated without any more legal manoeuvres. Still, the prospect of losing with bag after bag of ballots being ‘found’ after the election – in the back seat of cars, behind closet doors etc – can’t be a pleasant experience.
Also, it’s not an ‘obvious’ win when it’s in the low hundreds of votes separating them, almost all of which being conveniently discovered after the election.
Excellent!
If you’re from MN or know about the opposition (Norm Coleman) than you’re aware of his embezzlement suit with his wife and that he’s a wonderful all-around crook! Being from MN, my only run-in with him was when I was working at a garden store and he came in to purchase a couple cases of SLUG-O… No joke! How fitting?
Looking forward to less Ventura flash and more practical influence from our system of celebrity governance.
Good! One more vote for Obama’s Agenda. Take that drudgereport readers!
I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and dog-gone it, people like me!
Sorry, I’m pro-Franken, but don’t see this a clear cut ending to this fracas. The MN Supreme Court stopped short of ordering the Governor to sign the certification.
And Coleman might still appeal in the federal courts.
At last, the Al Franken Decade can commence!
He’s good enough, he’s smart enough, and doggone it, now he’s in the Senate!
Coleman will take it to federal court, count on it. If Dems try to seat Franken then Senate Repubs will have a chorus of mock outrage about ‘the process’ and ‘the Constitution’, all the usual things they say when they’ve lost and know it.
The president isn’t enough for you tax hungry asshole democrats?
Finally.
God help us…
I guess when you’re a failure as a comedian, a failure as a writer and a failure as a radio host, the only thing you have left is to run for public office.
Who’s that other well-known guy who was a failure at everything he did before he ran for office? Oh yeah, George W. Bush.
“Hollywood Democrat” – Let’s not be redundant, Nikki.
Yippee. One-party government! WOHOO! And his qualifications are what? I don’t think “constantly making personal attacks on people you disagree with” qualifies.
Al Franken is a U.S. Senator? What a joke.
This is a sad day for congress. There are fewer more self-serving, closed-minded people than Franken. Enjoy it while it lasts, in 18 months it won’t even be close to a super majority.
Finally… now let’s get that new health care legislation passed ASAP!
Another election “won” by cheating, lying, stealing, democrats.
When did this site become so political, I wonder?
Re: “The president isn’t enough for you tax hungry asshole democrats?”
You are entitled to vote for whomever you want to. You are entitled to belong to whichever party you want and believe in whatever you want to believe in. But please, at least make some sense.
1) First, as has been stated ad naseum, any tax increases will be born by those families making over $250,000 / year. So ask yourself: do you make over $250k/year? If not, then STFU about tax increases because they don’t apply to you. If so – and that’s a BIG ‘if,’ because only about 1% of the population does and I refuse to believe every anti-Obama poster on this board is in that top 1% – your life is still better than the other 99% of the population and your taxes aren’t actually being increased, but rather prior tax CUTS are being allowed to expire.
In other words, you got a break for 8 years under W., and now that break is coming to an end. So STFU.
2) What do you think it means for taxes when Reagan spends us into oblivion to “win” the Cold War? What do you think it means for taxes when W. sends us into TWO wars (invasions, really) and commits over 130,000 troops to those countries for 7+ years?! It means that we are committing to spending a crapload of money. Where do you think that money will come from?!!!! A tax by another name is still a tax. What is so difficult to comprehend about that?!
3) Obama did not get elected solely by Democrats. That election was an across the board ass-whipping. Not a too-close-to-call-so-let’s-let-5-conservative-supreme-court-justices-decide-the-presidency-election, an absolute ass-whipping. And the mood was reflected across the board in the congressional elections too.
Now let’s move on from the tit-for-tat and see if we can better this country already. Jesus!
Where’s my vote?
Will Franken vote for the Climate Change Cap and Trade Bill? Which includes btw mandatory installation of devices on showerheads for 3 minute showers. Not even Ed Begley goes that far!
Classic over-reach. Dems and Hollywood would have been better off without Franken in the Senate, people are going to blame both for those 3 minute showers. A reminder every day every morning about how much the elite hates the majority.
If spending 20 years on SNL as both a writer and a performer, plus a few best-selling books, is failure where do i sign up for some of that failure. Coleman supporters are sore losers.
Is he going to get retroactive back pay now?
What the hell is with all these right-wing marauders trolling DHD and posting at any possible opportunity, with the sole intention of irritating rational folks and exposing just how insane they really are? Or maybe it’s just the dozen Republicans who work in Hollywood.
Let’s just hope the Democrats get their act together and actually use that Republican-filibuster-proof vote to clean up the mess left by 8 years of toxic, faithless GOP stewardship.
Al, if you’re reading, it’s time to step up. Kick your fellow Senators in the rear and pass health care reform in the form of a public option. The nation collectively drop-kicked conservatism out of government for a reason.
