This is a surprise since he’d been at the trade for 9 1/2 years as a TV critic, columnist, blogger, feature writer and contract employee.
His TV column and reviews and blog had disappeared a few months back at his own behest and he’d been recently writing special issue features. “My situation at THR had been deteriorating for some time,” Ray just told me. “Mostly it stemmed from a personality clash and a difference in perception of what constitutes professional behavior with a certain editor. But I will cop to this being about me as much as them. I no longer saw an upside to riding the Hindenburg.” Other sources tell me Richmond hated to leave but thought it was for the best. Some of the clashes were about Richmond’s attempts to make his THR product more entertaining than the usual reporting wrapped in dry trade-speak. But his was not a popular position, nor his embrace of the web. Especially when The Powers That Be keep the THR print edition going at all cost.

What a loss. Ray was a great reporter who knew his stuff, and maintained a sense of humor. He always did right by me and my clients. He will definitely be missed.
This really sucks! Ray Richmond is a great reporter who has passionate opinions about the TV business which made him a blast to read. I loved his coverage and reviews and thought they were so well crafted with a sense of history and humor. This is a loss for The Reporter as they have become too corporate and dull. Best of luck Ray wherever you go. It is definitely their loss.
The trades are getting desperate, and desperation spawns crudeness not quality. Brian Lowry increasingly uses crass colloquialisms in a transparent attempt to be “entertaining” and current. Such as “dick swinging” and others. It’s not a blog, and it’s pathetic. If you can’t express yourself without being crude, you got nothin’ interesting to say. Editorial standards are vanishing.
Ray Richmond is a class act. It’s a sorry state of affairs when writers of his ilk are squeezed out. I hope that he lands somewhere worthy of his talents.
I agree. Letting Ray Richmond go was a big loss…for the THR. Shame on them!
Ray was not professional. He personally went after his critics merely for disagreeing with him. He won’t be missed. I’m sure he’ll end up on WordPress like all of the other “pros”.
YES! keep believing that print will COME BACK!!!
YES! Just hang on until the internet GOES AWAY!!!
Great Plan!
Ray Richmond should work for a tabloid – he’s definitely not a journalist. He doesn’t check his facts, doesn’t care who he hurts for no reason, and his only meager talent is at being snarky. I’m sure THR decided he was too big a legal headache for them. “Exciting” comes from truth – something Ray doesn’t really value.
Don’t cry for that hack. He had it comin’ for a long time, by his own admission.
I stopped subscribing several years ago since I can get everything I need online for free except my IMDbPro subscription.
Islamic Justice. He doesn’t know where the line is and I guess this proves that.
Sad to see someone of Ray Richmond’s quality go from THR. They’ve pretty much let everyone of value go from the paper. I’m glad I left years ago before the blood started to flow. Current management can’t blame a recession or ad decline for the problems; they stem from the loss of key talent.
Ugh, should’ve been that wretch Nellie Andreeva.
A further example of how THR is a shell of what it used to be and how the Mika/Byrne team has destroyed the brand beyond repair.
Meh. He sucked when he was at Variety, and he sucked at THR. Good riddance.
Very bad journalist. Got fired. For cause.
He’s a nice enough chap, with an amazing backstory of pain and survival. But, with every TV show these days seemingly a hack reality effort, his “outraged” reviews started to look the same after a while. It was probably time for him to move on – which he actually did a few years ago when he became a PR person at E! for literally a day or 3.
Great, I can renew my subscription.
The death of the HR is inevitable. Ray’s an extremely hard working and talented guy. I look forward to reading his pithy material elsewhere. He’ll be fine. The HR? Going, going…….
Ray, I think you did the right thing!!!

Few people reporting on entertainment do their homework like Ray Richmond. We’ll see you somewhere on the web, you’re too talented not to be heard from sooner than later.
