He died at UCLA Hospital at age 50. There is going to be a huge media circus (see below), but not here at DHD. So go elsewhere on the web for tributes to his talent and details about his death. I will sort out the business side of his career and not dwell on his personal life. There'll be a link when the story/s post.

as it should be.
Jackson hasn’t been relevant for a generation, nevertheless he was an icon and it’s odd when people who help to define an era pass away.
You know, my first reaction when I heard he was rushed to the hospital was “Damn, I hope it’s not a children’s hospital”.
Sorry Michael.
RIP
What a troubled soul he was.
Nikki–who will get the first sit down with Jordie Chandler.
The gag order re: settlement must be over with MJ’s death.
The Michael Jackson who used to defy logic and wow us kids on American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan Show died a long time ago.
This was only a very pale (pun intended) imitation.
RIP Mike. The actors and moguls who abandoned you is ready to embrace you once again. The vultures are going to shed crocodile tears.
No on tried harder to ruin their career and FAILED than Michael Jackson. Paul McCartney’s finally going to settle the score on this one baby
I’m not sorry to see him go. I think he was a psychopath and a pedophile.
It’s sad that his personality did not match his huge talent. And it’s always sad when a human being dies. But when I think of the damage he has left in his wake…especially the children, I’m glad he’s no longer around. I wish I could say otherwise.
So washed up Michael is dead. Bring on the LOL Cats.
Wow the entertainment industry was really rocked this week huh?
He had a lot of issues but man was he talented. I’d like to focus on Michael the entertainer. Thanks for the memories of my youth.
It’s funny that just the other day in a local drugstore they were playing a song Michael recorded when he was about 7 years old. That voice was like an angel and 43 years later was still playing over the radio.
RIP Mike.
I can take solace that MJ made most of the work he’s famous for before he started on the “other” chapter of his career. So my memories of his heyday are untainted
Truly one of the most talented people ever to walk this earth.
He will ALWAYS be The King of Pop, people give King of Rock and Roll to Elvis and he didn’t even create it. MJ was HANDS DOWN a better performer than him and did it since he was 10. He took the business to a new level and no one has or probably will ever reach again.
People nowadays brag about 5-10 million albums sold, how about 17 million of Off the Wall, 27 million copies of Thriller, 15 million of Bad, and 13 for Dangerous. Now THAT’S a star !!
R.I.P – Mike
i would assume AEG has some really good insurance to cover his non-appearances associated with london dates? I also assume this qualifies as force majuere?
So sad. Comes in threes again:
McMahon, Fawcett and now Jackson.
Well, at least heaven is going to have one hell of a show.
RIP
Universal is apparently still going through with the BRUNO premiere at Graumann’s Chinese, despite the fact that Michael Jackson’s star on the Hollywood walk of fame is right in front of the theater (they are currently not letting fans and mourners past heavy security)…
Seems a bit out-of-touch and maudlin to open a campy comedy hours after the death of such an icon.
I pity anyone who tries to sort out Jackson’s business affairs. The man couldn’t shop for groceries without it ending in a lawsuit.
I predict a nightmare of litigation upon litigation and tabloid revelations that will make the Anna Nicole Smith fiasco look reasonable.
You are right – I live in Westwood and the media circus is hovering right above my house as I type this – helicopters everywhere and why? To videotape the roof of a hospital. I have to say I am rather sickened by the gushing and rabid fans on the radio and TV – raving about how great he was – they keep using the term that he “touched” so many people without any sense of irony – ok, can one separate the man from his music? Sure. As a talent, he was a great singer and dancer – as a human – he was so twisted and damaged and people should not forget how truly weird he was – the sleepover with boys, the strange and dangerous hanging his baby over the railing, his repeated abuse of painkillers, the pedophile trials and lawsuits. He was a talented pop performer but this worshipping is a bit too much.
And a portion of that business side will be the Jackson family’s lawsuit against Entertainment Tonight for publishing a tasteless photo that shows a dead Michael Jackson receiving medical treatment.
Regardless, I am not a music fan but I know greatness when I see it. My best memory of Michael Jackson was his performance at halftime of Super Bowl 27. That was a wonderful performance. Rest in Peace.
Truly a tragic event. Michael Jackson, despite all his shortcomings, was undeniably the greatest entertainer/singer of his generation. It’s hard for people under the age of 30 to appreciate how huge his passing is. very similar to when Elvis died. In the 80’s Jackson was the number one celebrity in the world. His influence on pop music has been so severe, it’s hard to comprehend or appreciate.
His talent will be missed.
My grandmother always told me “Death comes in threes” how eerie, I didnt really understand why she said that but it fits this week…RIP Ed, Farrah, and Micheal.
Business only? Rumors are floating he left McCartney his stake in the Beatles catalog.
True? And if true, can the vultures be held off to get it back to Sir Paul?
Thanks Nikki for keeping it straight
2008 was the 3oth anniversary of the Wiz.
He was one of the greatest performers of all time, dancing, singing and giving homage to Fred, Gene and Danny. He will be missed and remembered like Dean and Monroe, as someone who left the stage too soon.
I hope to visit the Motown museum tomorrow in homage.
Wasn’t MJ up to his eyeballs in debt and living in Dubai? Did he pull a Ken Lay to escape his debts? Many suspect Darth Cheney will do the same if this war crimes thing gains traction. And how convenient that this occurs just when a philandering Republican governor is on the front page of every newspaper. Sanford who?
Gannon’s right. This is clearly a republican conspiracy.
“Greatness” “Icon” Give me a break! The man (and I
use the term loosely) was a pedophile, sexual predator, and loon of galactic dimensions.
Good riddance.
I thought he was looking pale recently.
Jackson only retained a small portion of the rights to the Beatles catalogue. Doesn’t Sony own the bulk now?
That is not a nice story the way Jackson bought up the rights behind McCartney’s back – that was a real betrayal of a friend.
I will miss Michael very much it was like we grew up with the Jackson5,I know that the world is so heartbroken that this shocking news today is not what the fans of Michael wanted to here. I will never forget this day for as long as i live, I am so hurt over Michael death that it still dont seem real.
“Thanks for the memories of my youth.”
- oh, the irony.
Thank you.
That’s a thank you for now and a thank you everyday for the next few months the so called news stations will be dwelling on it instead of letting me know what’s going on in the world.
-Julie Evans
Hi,
There are some really vile and bitter people around.
The man was never found guilty of any thing, what’s more, the cynicism of these people who would jump to certain conclusions without caution, is an indication of their cynicism, lack of kindness or generosity of spirit.
Whereas, is there one quote when Michael Jackson was negative about, or dissed, anyone else?
Dirty-minded twisted people always think everyone else is as perverted as them, rather than even the potential of innocence or naivity.
I wasn’t into music until well past normal, but Michael Jackson will have been a fixture as a megastar for many people under 40+ across the whole world – a massive span of shared popular cultural history, I even remember people swapping and selling video-tapes of Thriller which was released in the early years of vcr’s.
A creative master in the spheres of business, music, production, video (even indirectly, youtube), movies, branding/marketing, choreography, whose influence has permeated the proceeding decades, and will continue to.
There will be no other such mega-star, able to cross-over musical genre’s, race, technology, ages, geography, language, etc.
An artist who didn’t need to include epithets, slurs, glamourising violence and such like, but looked at a better world.
So the unkind haters can hate, but most people will have there own personal memories of a catalogue of music that will last longer then their talentless bile.
Rest in Peace – ALL.
Yours kindly,
Shakir Razak
All you need to know: This pedophile paid 23 MILLION DOLLARS to a 13 year old boy to make a criminal case go away. If he never wrote a song and never made a video would the world be any different? Would your life be any different? I heard a woman a female correspodent on a cable network compare his death to president Kennedy. Huh? How anyone can celebrate the life of this drug addicted pedophile is beyond me. He lived as a disgrace. Let him die as one.
stay classy, Nikki
Shocked yes, but how could anybody be surprised? No matter what people believe about an afterlife, and in my mind the light goes out and that is it, Jackson is at peace.
And yah, I wonder how Paul McCartney is feeling.
There ought to be a mandatory 48 hr media delay on “news” re: hospitalizations and death.
Pictures of celebrities in body bags (Ledger), receiving medical treatment and the like ought to be banned.
It’s sad to see how the media don’t respect the right of families to be the first to know – and who informs them about such sad news. Does the world really need to know within 5 minutes if a celebrity (who’s not a politician) had an accident or passed away? Really? Why? I’m disgusted.
I’m sad that we’ve lost such a major talent.
So all those h8ers knew him personally? Wow.
Jesus, some of you people are brutal. At least he achieved something in his career, unlike some of you who’s pinnacle will be a posting on the Deadline Hollywood comment page. Have a little decency…
It never ceases to amaze me the number of negative A-Holes their are on Blogs. Michael had mental deficits to be sure due to his unique childhood that fortunately none of these critical A-holes will never have to experience themselves. Michael was generous in life and extremely talented. His impact in the music world will most likely never be matched again. Rest in peace Michael and Thanks for the music you brought to the soul of many here on earth.
Hi,
What’s happening with Bruno, that features an attempted skit regarding Michael Jackson and his sister (+ a mobile Phone)?
Kind regards,
Shakir Razak
It’s very possible to love the artist but despise the man. That’s how I feel about MJ. He was a musical icon but his personal life – well we all know about that. RIP Michael.
A.M.
If we knew him personally? No thanks. I know all I need to know.
He thought sleeping with little boys was okay. He said it on the national television in an interview with a British journalist.
He paid 23 million dollars to a little boy’s family to make a molestation case go away.
He was accused by several children of molestation.
His own sister called him a pedophile.
To all of you oblivious Michael Jackson fans celebrating the life of an admitted pedophile because he was a talented musician. Raise a glass of Jesus juice to yourselves. Cheers. You deserve each other.
Some people do know the real story, so those of you who live for celebrity hogwash should shut up and go to TMZ and join the delusional idolatry there. Good to see some intelligent and level headed comments about the reality here.
RIP, MJ.
I grew up listening to Michael Jackson. The Thriller/Pepsi generation Michael Jackson. And that’s how I’m going to remember him. He was
an icon.
I understand there was some controversy around his personal choices.
But he’s dead now. So how about showing some class and not pissing
all over a dead man?
Hey Hank Yablonski, I’m the head writer for LATE NIGHT WITH JIMMY FALLON and I think your joke is so funny that I want to hire you right here on the spot. It’s a good thing you posted your real name after that zinger because now you’re getting your big break!
Wow. A lot of cold hearts on this site. “Yes, sure, you once defined a generation, but what have you done for us lately.”
I’m curious to know what’s going to happen with his children, especially considering that he was in debt, and having to work these shows to pay it off. What’s to become of those kids now? There’ll be nothing once the lawyers are done. I hope his creditors are a little less cold than the early posters on this thread.
R.I.P. MJ
It is amazing to me how many Bigots are in this world. People that God has truly forgotten, get to decide the movies we make they get to decide the stories we read and they even, to some extent, get to choose the people we admire. When an icon emerges they attempt, with their money and influence to sully the name and the memory of that person. MICHAEL JACKSON will live on FOREVER while these bigots, these truly hateful people of satan will burn in hell and be spoken of, nor remembered, nevermore.
I grew with MJ. People throw the word Icon around too much but he was one. However, along with his outsized talents were his problems, mental, financial, etc.
The real Michael Jackson “died” a while ago. On another blog someone said he was Norma Desmond. I agree.
Was the dude a bit “Off the Wall?” yes.
Was he “Bad?” Well, it was never proven.
But he sure was a “Thriller.”
And all the bitter and untalented posters here who want to throw stones clearly can’t realize we just lost a true talent.
When Anna Nicole Smith died, the TV tabloid milked the story with sensational “specials” and “exclusives” for about 2 weeks straight.
I’m out of the country, coming back late July, but I suspect they;ll keep going about MJ pretty much until the Emmys (or until someone else dies).
Talent irreplaceable no matter how many will try to copy his stile very sad bout his death, the world has lost an irrepressible guy…
@ notafan
You must be like 20, because no one in their right mind can EVER knock his impact!!!
GREATEST PERFORMER EVER!! 750 MILLION ALBUMS SOLD !! # 1 ALBUM, SINGLE AND VIDEO OF ALL TIME !!! ALL YOU HATERS CAN EAT A DICK !!! NOTHING YOU SAY CAN EVER TAKE AWAY WHAT HE DID!!!
HE WILL ALWAYS BE THE KING OF POP !!!!
R.I.P Mike
Shakir – it’s being excised from the print. No word on whether it’ll make the DVD release.
RIP Michael Jackson!
Last I checked, a long trial over child molestation took place a few years ago, and a jury found Michael innocent.
He was a terrific man. Haters – please pour the Hater Aid elsewhere today (isn’t there a WMEE thread somewhere???)
RIP King
Damn motherfuckas is so heartless on here… When someone passes you shouldnt remember the bad things.. No Micheal wasnt a pedophile he was proven innocent damn was you there? Did u see him do something to that boy? NOOO so dont judge someone you dont know.. He brung us great music and sooo much more.. He might be gone, but his music lives forever.. My heart goes out to his family and espically his kids.. R.I.P The king of Pop
I was never a big fan of his music but I was somehow very saddened by the news of his passing. I believe he lost the will to thrive following the public humiliation and media circus that encircled him. Personally, I am still not sure what he was actually guilty of other than being incredibly naive. I’m not impressed by people who make such allegations and then drop charges after receiving monetary compensation. In life, Michael Jackson was surrounded by people who fed from him and unfortunately, that will continue well past his death.
Right, Nikki. You’re above it all.
Just in the last month or so there was an interesting Wall St. Journal article about Colony Capital, Tom Barrack, AEG, Anschutz, etc. Looking forward to the details of sorting out the business aspect of this. How will it all unfold after Colony made such a gigantic financial commitment to his comeback. I am fascinated to see how that plays out…
What a tragic and awesome talent. His death pushes his troubles to the back burner while spotlighting his amazing gift. I will treasure the joy he brought me as part of the Jackson Five. That will always remain.
Sad outcome for an exploited child performer. History repeats itself over and over, doesn’t it?
FOX reporting that Lloyds of London took the insurance hit on the concerts that will not be played.
In the middle of this circus, take time for the real martyrs, those who are fighting the fight in Iran. God bless them and protect them now that their religious leader has determined many of them should be put to death.
Keeping to the biz only theme: Will the nets insistence on all Jacko all the time for several days help movies this weekend?
A stunning loss of a man who gave so much to the world.
Apparently acquittals mean less to people so filled w/ fear & hate than unfounded accusations based on greed.
RIP Michael Jackson.
You will never be forgotten.
Long live the freedom fighters of Iran.
Bye Michael, Godspeed.
The truly interesting thing is how people are *so* quick to throw out the tenants this nation has been built on (innocent until proven guilty), when it suits their jealous, base desires to feed on the knowledge of trouble in paradise.
Michael Jackson was too mighty for the malicious, controversy-for-cash driven “media.” Thus they created an alter-ego they could comfortably profit from: Enter Jacko.
Scathing judgments made by those who uphold the negativity say more about the judges than Jackson. Ye of little faith wallow in doubt, but the doubt will one day drown you.
If these judges had just a little common sense, perhaps they’d realize that pedophiles don’t broadcast their crimes on national television. They hide. And in hindsight, $23 million is a pittance to pay to avoid the toll of fighting accusations. This latest heart-stressing, Martin Bashir-created court ordeal cost Jackson only … his life.
I applaud Michael for refusing to march to the soiled drum beats of a jaded nation, but continuing to march to the pure rhythms of his own drum, his HUGE beating heart, which pulsated resoundingly to the rhythms of love … until it stopped.
Good thing about Mike, or the “God” thing perhaps, is that he wouldn’t judge the judgers, me thinks. He was too busy being. No one knew the laughter in this man’s life, the joy he shared with his children, his family, his friends. But yet, people cast stones based on a sliver of his “troubled” life, filtered through the viewpoint of the vile vultures of media, who salivate over the controversy they create. But Mike knew … this is simply “Human Nature.”
To Really & Tiffany:
Jackson was never found “innocent” of child molesting.
He was found “not guilty”.
There’s a huge difference!
What’s really needed is to add what the Scottish courts have: A finding of “not proven”, which means, we know you did it, but there’s not enough evidence to send you to prison.
If California & the US had that, Jackson would have received a “not proven” verdict!
And Tiffany: Learn to spell!
To Unindicted Co-Conspirator, NO, NO, NO!!!!!!!!!!!!
However, there will be some people who claim that they were coming out of Transformers 2 when they heard of Michael’s death.
@Rocky is absolutely right.
This site is for truth not moronic celebrity worship, or planted agenda, from those whose lives are truly void or who have 2 IQ points. He hurt many people, but you don’t mourn for them because they didn’t sing a song that reminds you of your first 7th grade dance.
Death is not a free pass from responsibility for your life.
Conduct yourself in life the way you wish to be remembered.
I love when people say he was innocent of child molestation. Being acquitted doesn’t mean you didn’t do it. it only means not enough evidence was presented to convict. Cases like this don’t even make it to trial unless there is compelling evidence. These are the most difficult cases to prosecute. How’s this for evidence. He paid 23 MILLION dollars to a 13 year old boy who had accused him of molestation. Hush money to shut him up. I don’t know about you, I wouldn’t pay 23 cents to someone accusing me of doing something I didn’t do. 23 Million!. Think about that. It’s a fact. Years later more accusations from several different children. Listen to his own words, his sisters words. She called him a pedophile.
So, he was a talented musician, so what. What does that mean? Isn’t it more important what kind of man he was or have we gone to a place where talent is more important. Does his talent make being a sexual predator okay. Or does being a sexual predator destroy any of the good things he may have done.
All of you Michael Fans. Would you let your children anywhere near him.? If not, why would you possibly celebrate the life of a man who can’t be trusted with children. Why is his passing anything more than a sad pathetic, evil, man passing on.
Its sad to hear the double standard that exist in America today. I understand many people have different feelings in regards to the child molestation situation. As a father of 4, I certainly understand. Which is why as a father, I have had a hard time believing the truth of those charges. I know personally, any person that touches any of my children can forget about me ever accepting any money. I want your ass UNDER THE JAIL! So saying that, since Mike has NEVER BEEN CONVICTED of any crime; what do you say about…Jerry Lee Lewis? Roman Polanski? Elvis Presely was a drug abuser whom married Lisa Marie when she was 15 years old! Woody Allen divorced his wife, then married his “adopted” step daughter. But yet, all of these people are like national icons. Two of them are even on our postal stamps! And still, you find it convenient to discredit Michael because he was, well at the most, different. LOSERS & HIPOCRITS I say!
AND FOR THE RECORD, there is no comparison to Elvis. Although a great entertainer and an influencer of a generation is his own right, Michael Jackson is simply on another planet. Mike was a living, performing icon for 45 YEARS! He has sold more records than any other human being alive. He’s touched more lives than any other entertainer in history.
So, when its all said and done, and you take a good hard look at FACTUALLY, WHO Michael was. At his worst, he was a creative genius whom never fully matured into a functioning adult because of his never seen before celebrity status. Shouldn’t there be some consideration that the guy was in the public eye since the age of 5? Shit, I can name 10 people off the top of my head that barely made it 5 years with just 1/10 of his success. So for all of you “wacko Jacko” assholes, when you look at MJ’s discography, his music, his humanitarian acts, how he touched people, brought the world together in humanitarian efforts, you don’t see him for the absolute genius he is. All you see is the fact that he was a bit different and obviously a very lonely man. Still doesn’t make him a monster. Just makes him human.
And honestly WHO CARES who takes the insurance hit or whatever from the canceled concert. They all stood to make BOAT LOADS of money off this tour. It was an investment…the price of doing business.
Courts very rarely declare anyone “innocent” — MJ, OJ, etc. were found “not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt” which is not the same thing as being innocent (as evidenced by the OJ civil verdict, where he was found to be “guilty” under a lower standard of evidence). The only thing these decisions “prove” is that the prosecution didn’t convince the jury of the accused’s guilt to the required standard. I don’t know for a fact that MJ was a pedophile, but I certainly wouldn’t have allowed my child to be alone with him, let alone sleep over at his house.
Dear Nikki, As you’ve allowed other such comments, please allow below the line:

So the unkind haters can hate, but most people will have there own personal memories of a catalogue of music that will last longer then their talentless bile.
Just 2 weeks away from a new chapter, and a rehearsal the night before…..
Rest in Peace – ALL.

The reason he got off is because the jury was comprised of idiots like the ones commenting on this board.
Moron jurors who won’t convict someone who entertains them. Moron jurors who didn’t convict not because he was “innocent,” but because they didn’t “like” that poor kid’s mom.
You people are testament to why a professional juror system is needed. As long as someone entertains the idiot masses, they are given a pass on crimes.
Also, several jurors publicly regretted their decision to acquit and said they were pressured.
Grow up, loonies. What goes on in a courtroom has nothing to do with justice.
Shakir Razak
In July 2002, Michael Jackson referred to Tommy Motolla as “mean, a racist, and very, very very devilish” He was also notorious for refusing to pay his creditors. And a $2o million dollar payout to the family of Jordan Chandler pretty much confirms that MJ molested at least one child. Other than that, he seemed like a pretty nice guy.
He was a huge musical talent in his day, but his day was 20 years ago. And that part of him will live forever.
He was also a wretched human being, a victim and a victimizer. His death brought a shrug from me. More worthy, but less celebrated people, die everyday.
An EXTRAORDINARY talent. That being said…I would’nt let Micheal Jackson watch my kids, on TV.
re: king of music…period
You are right, he touched many people. The problem was that many of them were 11year old boys he had gotten drunk in his bedroom(a fact). Was just a lonely man…are you hearing yourself?
Dear Realworldperson,
Sure glad your not a judge nor juror. You still can’t get “a fact” correct. Lemme guess, it was people like you that acquitted him huh? According to you, they couldn’t get the facts straight either. Hearing yourself? Lol.
Michael Jackson was one of the greatest American performers ever.
He was a true artist and poet.
It is so symbolic that his fragile heart gave out to a cruel, mocking world.
He transcended almost every barrier:
Was he..
Black or White?
Male or Female?
Straight or Gay?
Innocent or Guilty?
Christian or Muslim?
Sincere or Sell-out?
These are only some ot the contradictions in his pop-superstardom.
Perhaps Michael Jackson HIMSELF was “THE” work of art.
Transforming his body–along with his personal affairs, interests and friends.
Love him or despise him, Michael Joseph Jackson was a brilliant showman. And THAT is all that we should ask of him. HE did HIS JOB!
I think Michael Jackson was unfairly villainized. He clearly had some mental issues, but I hate that the world always jumps to the bullshit conclusion that mental illness equals evil, bad, perverse, etc. I’ve worked with a lot of mentally ill people, and the vast majority are very gentle, sensitive, good natured souls who endure a lot of agony. For the record, NO, I don’t think MJ ever molested a child or would ever hurt anyone. Shame on the world for launching a witch hunt on this human being.
The boys who accused him of molesting them won’t tell the truth until their parents are dead. MJ deserves his legacy. These boys know if they confess to lying their parents will have to give back the money, confess to fraud and blackmail and got to prison. Must be torture for these boys to be racked with guilt. If MJ really molested boys there would have been dozens of court cases not just two from the same DA.
I hope the truth will come out. RIP.
