Updated with video from tonight’s “Fire David Letterman” rally (see below):
10. “David who?”
9. “Well, it was nice of CBS to provide the catering.”
8. “We should have done this years ago.”
7. “What idiot turned Broadway into a pedestrian mall?”
6. “Isn’t there always a crowd demanding Letterman be fired?”
5. “March around the potholes, people.”
4. “Can we also get CBS to bring back Gunsmoke?”
3. “When does Cheney get here with the waterboarding gear?”
2. “He should apologize for that hairpiece.”
1. “Thanks for coming, Regis.”
A few dozen protesters turned up to tonight’s “Fire David Letterman” rally outside the Ed Sullivan Theater. According to New York Magazine’s website, videographer Jonah Green learned that they watch Fox News, hate socialism, and think that Letterman “rapes children with his mouth.” Oh, and they really, really like Jay Leno:
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

I don’t care if you despise Palin NOTHING justifies the ghastly comments Letterman said about Palin and especially her minor daughter on national television.
It was the 14 year-old that accompanied Palin to the game and to say viewers should have thought Letterman was referring to the 18 year-old is a really sad attempt at CYA and brainwashing.
Furthermore to say the same so called joke is acceptabe when directed at an 18 year-old is as nutty as a Squirrels breakfast.
To say such a thing on national TV about any young woman just reaching the age of majority who has had a child out of wedlock is pretty slutty. It’s despicable.
Some defending Letterman say it was ok because the daughter not at the game was an advocate of abstinence and therefore fair game. That too is outrageous. So she failed to achieve that goal it doesn’t make her a hypocrite.
I an neither a fan a left or the right.
Letterman should have known better. He’s jumped the Shark on this one. People are pissed with this anything goes anybody can say anything about anything about anybody.
Those that feel this is being over blown, I got news for you, Most the people that say this comment are appalled.
Hollywood lives in a bubble.
Sarah Palin is being manipulated by a lunatic fringe minority and she doesn’t even know it. Fifteen protesters tell you everything. It makes about as much sense to fire Letterman as it does to keep the Coyotes of the NHL in Phoenix. Oh, wait, they might do that. Never mind….
Just a point of fact: Letterman actually has made fewer Sarah Palin jokes then Leno or Conan. SNL made more then a few tasteless ones, but instead of demanding an apology from them, she appears on it.
As to Bristol Palin, she stopped being a private figure when ‘she’ decided to become a spokesperson for the Candies Foundation to promote abstinence. Oh, sorry they call it ambassador. (Did the Palins ever look at the Candies print ads through the years, talk about tasteless and demeaning.) Oh, and there she was on the cover of People with her son. Now that’s private.
Palin has traded on her sexuality for years. That is her right. But to get offended by someone else who plays with that image in a manner you didn’t intend is hypocritical. But even more hypocritical is to use her children as shields and cudgels. Making an obvious joke about Bristol into one about Willow was the Palins’ choice. Putting Piper on the ice at the hockey game in Pennsylvania was Palin’s choice. Why would you do these things if your children are that important to you? Aren’t you supposed to protect them, not the other way around? And for all the complaints about the Obama girls, they were in school during the campaign. How much school did the Palins’ children miss as they were dragged on the campaign trail, going from event to event?
This has been a crass effort to stay in the spotlight, not by Letterman, but by Sarah and Todd Palin.
And if you want to get a good look at her governing ability look into the efforts to get food and fuel to the rural and native communities of Western Alaska this last winter. The term missing in action was invented for Sarah Palin, Governor. Probably too busy chasing the next national press opportunity to actually do her job.
Believe it or not, I really do this puts Sarah Palin and her family off the table for comics. Anything that gets her talked about less is good.
So… this is what those ass-hats on the talkback look like every time Drudge links to you? Fucking swell.
Wow the FEMBOTS are out in full force on this post. Shut up and go bake me a pie.
JD get real. Even Obama was offended when comedians & reporters started inching into dissing his family. Then everyone backed off because of the race card implications as well as many media types started burning incense at the altar of Obama. However, I agreed with Obama on that one. I would have like the left-wing, and certain “conservatives”, to have also respected Palin’s family, as Obama himself wanted.
Unless the pro-Obama or anti-palin factions supprt jokes & character cynacism for ALL politicians, then their “oh I am so offended” comments are mute & biased.
Dave got burned trying to burn a female politician & her daughters. Oh f8ckin well. Live with it.
also numbers mean nothing in situations like this. the internet can do alot more damage then any rally of thousands.
just ask…oh lets see…Imus, Dan Rather, and so on and so on…no mass rally’s for either of them, yet both of them have had their careers drastically changed due to the internet.
…and with 68% of adult americans aganst this type of behavior I would say Twitter & company have done their work already.
Dave is a great comedian but he does not understand what he has set himself up against. Sadly his hatred of Palin & her family & conservatism, blinds him from seeing the woods for the trees in what kind of reaction can be generated by his “off-color” “comedic” actions.
i guarantee he will be more cautious now though. ya think?
It was a joke. And Palin used it to stir up the same crazies that are now a far greater threat to our union than any Islamist terrorist.
They will seek to destroy our country from the inside. Like Oklahoma City
The scariest part of the whole story is that a moose-shooting, reactionary, churchifying, lady of limited intelligence, perception and vision came this close to being VEEP of the U.S. of A! YIKES!
Those of you with your long, boring posts about how great Palin is are wasting your time. We’ve heard this crap before and rejected it and her at the ballot box last fall. Run her again in 2012 and it’ll be the same thing. Please give it a rest. Shame on you for acting like you care about women’s issues just to continue forcing her down our throats.
For those of you truly upset by how women are treated in the media, there’s truth to that. I think it’s an area liberals and conservatives could find common ground, that is, IF that’s really the point and you really go after the true culprits, namely advertisers who exploit women daily. Letterman’s joke was insulting and he’s apologized, but the extent of the outrage is questionable.
Well, New York is finally ‘done’ if even New Yorkers are this stupid.
I always find it entertaining when liberals demonstrate such naiveté. Whether it is the tea party demonstrators or a protest of David Letterman’s poor attempt at humor, the media selectively picks the most ill-informed and irritating people in a crowd to cast a negative light on the opposing point-of-view. And then comes the ad hominem attack on Fox News. Such unbridaled ignorance is staggering. The funny thing is, both my liberal and conservative friends pretty much agree that the rampant vulgarity, violence, and voyeurism broadcast by contemporary media has fed the degeneration of American society and culture. And yet, those who identify it and protest it are vilified while the purveyors of this trash are encouraged and supported.
Oh, and by the way Nikki, as you know (maybe you prefer not to believe it), it’s not just a handful of yahoos watching Fox News. Fox gives the other cable news outlets a drubbing—day after day, night after night in all demos.

Prime: FNC: 2156 | CNN: 664 | MSNBC: 872 | HLN: 448
Data by Nielsen Media Research. Live and same day (DVR) data.
For all those who think Letterman is being unusually hard on Palin- as I recall, he was far worse on Dan Quayle.(Remember Dan Quayle? The “proto-Palin”?)
Better Angels says “Palin’s daughter is not in the public eye.”
Palin’s 18 year old (adult) daughter did a fucking media tour as a spokeswoman for abstinence education, appearing on multiple national news shows – while being an unwed teen mother herself. That makes her fair game for any comedian anywhere.
If anyone thinks that Letter gave the two shits about Palin that it would take to know that she actually brought her 14 yo daughter to the game, they have no sense of reality. Every one on the planet would hear that joke and KNOW that he meant the 18 year old media-touring one.
Palin is the one who brought her other daughter in to this… ZERO people thought that it was about Bristol until Palin said it was.
I love Dave, so I’m glad the publicity helped him.
And Whiskey? Are you really criticizing him for telling this joke, and then saying that YOU think his half-brothers rape charge is “hilarious”? Wow – do you even realize how much of a farce you are?
Does raping with your mouth qualify as foreplay?
“”Let me ask you something. If Palin can’t handle a stupid joke about her daughter, then how the hell is she supposed to handle things if our country is ever attacked?”
I think JD says it all with that short comment. Seriously, anyone want this reactionary hysteric running this country. It’s absurd.
The video is sad. Fortunately it’s just a few people.
That’s just ignorance, period. I know it’s the American way n all but it’s getting really old really fast.
RE: The Obvious — Eloquently and accurately stated. Funny how, for a bunch of “open-minded free-thinkers” all these writers think in Stalin-esque lock-step!
I’m no apologist for these kooky protestors, but the fact remains you’d have never heard him make those crude “jokes” about Chelsea Clinton, the Gore girls, John Edwards’s daughter, etc. Over the past 15 years he’s become a thoroughly bitter, unfunny ass. His tedious “humor by repetition” shtick was old in the early ’90s and NBC was wise to cut him loose.
As another poster noted, given his elevated salary and the state of tv nowadays, CBS really should sack this guy already and replace him with a more qualified host, not as a capitulation to these loud-mouthed protestors but rather for their own long-term viability.
My the far lefter’s venom is certainly spewing today! I guess that SAG vote is still churning in your gut.
My personal favorite is the man yelling at the Black woman. He really worked that finger and neck wave. And had some body fluidity to boot. I give him a 9.5.
The best part of the whole video is the lady who says, “Do you know what Schmuck means in Jewish?” Not hebrew, but “Jewish”.
After watching that, there is no doubt in my mind that these people are all idiots of the worst kind.
She really does look like a slutty flight attendant thhough – great joke
He’s gutless (won’t take on Obama who is hilarious with his half-brother who’s refused admittance into the UK over a rape charge … of a 13 year old girl)

I thought rape jokes about young girls weren’t funny?
And to all of those claiming Dave is losing money because of this whole thing… his ratings are the best they’ve been in years. Palin jokes boost ratings (remember SNL last year?) and Obama jokes don’t, so that’s why they tell them. Maybe you’re the one living in a bubble.
Funny how they like Jay Leno. Maybe they thought Jay’s delivery of the same joke last fall during the campaign was funnier.
The husbands of those shrill shrews in the video were probably off having affairs while their better halves were feigning false outrage over a late-night talk show joke.
Palin’s daughter is not in the public eye.
Better Angels, I beg to differ. I hold in my hands the People magazine with Bristol Palin on the cover. She also volutarily appeared on numerous television news programs discussing her single motherhood. To me, she is definitley in the public eye and is there of her own choosing.
