This came as a shocker to his staff. But the national media won’t have NBC Universal communications czar Cory Shields to kick around anymore. (All I can say is, Drats!) I hear there are three logical people to take Shields’ place: Kathy Kelly-Brown, SVP of Communications, Rebecca Marks, who is NBC Entertainment’s PR czarina on the West Coast, and Allison Gollust, SVP of NBC News. Unless, of course, Jeff “Strangelove” Zucker brings in a Four-Star General from the outside to deal with meanies like me. So what does the NBCU boss expect: a miracle worker to improve his and NBC Universal’s image? To some, Cory’s newly created job as EVP of Global Policy Strategies and Alliances sounds like a promotion. To me, it sounds like the kind of cushy gig where your phone rings once a week. Shields has been top flack at NBCU since 2006. Shields now “will play a key role in advancing NBC Universal’s global agenda for strengthening IP protection for the company’s content around the world as well as for continuing to build strong alliances with other IP-intensive industries, labor unions and other organizations focused on protecting jobs and growing the U.S. economy.” He’ll report jointly to Zucker and to NBCU EVP and General Counsel Rick Cotton. I wish him well.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Don’t let Zucker or his crew kick u around.
I used to work at an NBC affiliate that was number one in our market because NBC was number one (and we had popular news anchors and reporters). But when Zucker left the Today Show and ascended in NBC while the ratings dropped and bizarre decisions were made, we were always left scratching our heads and wondering why he wasn’t fired. I left as the ratings at the affiliate started dropping, about 5 years ago.
Here are some people that might succeed in creating a positive image for NBC:
1. Obi Wan Kenobi: I can see the press conference now. “No this is not the failing network you’re looking for.” And all the reporters go: “This is not the failing network we are looking for.”
2. Carrot Top: The reporters will be so bewildered by his very existence, they won’t have any time to write anything negative about NBC.
3. Jesus: Only someone that can raise the dead might have a shot at bringing back NBC.
It’s like firing the poster designer for Land of the Lost. Yeah, THAT is why the film tanked. Great work, Zucker.
Yeah the problem is PR when you are running “I’m a Celebrity…” with a bizarre collection of no-counts four nights a week.
Thanks for your post on Cory Shields. If you read Bill Carter’s posting on NYT Decoder you’d think he got a promotion. It seems Bill has been on the NBC payroll for quite some time but this is shameless even for them.
Congrats to Cory Shields, he’ll avoid the eventual bloodletting that will be the end of the Zucker era.
This is like when the baseball team is struggling, they fire the hitting coach first, then the pitching coach, then a concessions guy, then the manager.
Yikes, you can be fired for not protecting a non image maker. Stars fired publicists, directors don’t know what a publicist does, and writers, well if a writer needs a PR person, and he must not know how to use this grammar checker.
Zucker should rehire this PR person; after all he got great coverage, even when it was negative. Positive spin, well if any spin looks good with NBC’s bad lineup it might be payola. ABC’s Thursday night lineup will wipe the floor with NBC’s SNL night part 2.
What do you have against Jeff Zucker? He went to Harvard, for crying out loud. He’s got to be smart!
“Let’s go NBC, let’s go!” (stomp, stomp) OK, can I have that job now?
I’d like to see Zucker fired.
The captain needs to know its all his fault and no matter how many times they play musical chairs with rotating people around so that “change” can be said to have been made, its still….ZUCKER!
How this guy keeps his job I don’t know.
What does he have over Immeult? Or does Zucker kiss Immeult’s a$$ enough on a daily basis to make Immeult feel good?
I never thought I’d say this but I actually want Jack Welch back, despite his political leanings.
Nikki,
What a horrible desecration you have perpetrated against General Buck Turgidson by photoshopping that pimple on top of the General’s shoulder’s! ! ! !
Jeff, get a new right arm. A partner to do your bidding to the industry. Forget about a press person. They’re not viested in you. Hire an executive who people like/respect/and can validate your standing. After all, it’s a business based on perception. Until perception becomes truth. I’d think about solidifying your troops…. I’m just sayin…
I really want to see the pix & video that Zucker is blackmailing Immelt with!
They have to be the freakiest & most disgusting stuff ever created!
How else can you explain this total incompetent keeping his job?
Hey Ms. Finke, you underestimate the fallout from the story you yourself broke.
