SATURDAY PM/SUNDAY AM UPDATE: The "Hard-R"-rated comedy Bruno opened to $14.2 million Friday but dropped a huge -37% for $8.8 million Saturday.
So, with Sunday's $7.4M estimate, the movie finished with a $30.4M weekend from its 2,756 North American theaters -- better than Universal expected and on par with the studio's hit 2007 "R"-rated laffer Knocked Up. It's also more than Sacha Baron Cohen's first mockumentary Borat (but that played in only 837 venues). "The film WILL be very profitable for the studio," Universal told the media Sunday. "The opening numbers for the film should be looked at on a global basis based on the territories Uni controls and not just the numbers in North America as Universal has put itself in a strong position to recoup its costs and start to make a return on its investment after the weekend." Internationally, Bruno grossed an estimated $20M at 1,435 dates in the 8 Universal territories this weekend. Although Sacha's gay Austrian fashionista (from his HBO Ali G show) received 70% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (but only 53% among top critics), it earned a "C" Cinemascore indicating domestic moviegoers didn't like what they saw -- perhaps because of the unexpectedly in-your-face male genitalia. Exit data showed the audience was 56% to 44% male/female, 46% to 54% under/over 25 years of age, and the main reason given for choosing to see Bruno was the "humor" (74%).
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation slammed Bruno for "decreasing the public's comfort with gay people" by "reinforcing some damaging, hurtful stereotypes". It turns out that incoming GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios only saw the film Friday, even though Universal had shown it to GLAAD's outgoing prez. "Unfortunately, the scenes that we had the biggest concerns about remained in the film," Barrios said. (One shows Bruno in a hot tub with his adopted infant son and two naked men involved in a sex act.) "Scenes like that don't help America understand the hundreds of thousands of gay families who get up every day, do the carpool then rush home to make dinner and be with their children," Barrios said. Universal responded with this statement: "We believe the overwhelming majority of the audience will understand and appreciate the film's inarguably positive intentions."
No. 2 went to Fox's Ice Age 3-D: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs with made $8.4M Friday (-51% from a week ago) and an impressive $11M Saturday from 4,102 dates for a $28.5M weekend (just a drop of -22%) and $120.5M cume. Paramount's Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen was 3rd with another $7.3M Friday and $9.8M Saturday from 4,293 plays for a $24M weekend and humongous $339M domestic cume. No. 4 was Universal's Public Enemies, down 44% from a week ago for a $14.1M weekend from 3,336 runs and $66.4M cume. Several rival studios don't think the Michael Mann/Johnny Depp biopic of John Dillinger can make it to $100M domestic, continuing Universal's string of summer disappointments. But the studio disputes that.
In the 5th spot, Disney's The Proposal earned a $10.5M weekend from 3,327 dates and $113.7M cume. Warner Bros' The Hangover was #6 with a $9.9M weekend from 3,002 runs and big $222.7M cume. The opening of Fox's teen romantic comedy I Love You Beth Cooper was overwhelmed this weekend by Bruno's awareness; playing in just 1,858 theaters, it debuted at #7 with $2.3M Friday, then went in the wrong direction (-22%) with $1.6M Saturday for a $5M weekend. At No. 8, Pixar/Disney's Up made $4.6M this weekend from 2,201 plays for a new $273.7M cume. New Line/Warner Bros' My Sister's Keeper eked out a $4.1M weekend for #9 from 2,444 venues with a new $35.7M cume. And, rounding out the Top 10, Sony's The Taking Of Pelham 123 made $1.6M weekend from 1,116 locations and a $61.5M cume.
Overall, this weekend's box office was slightly up --1.4% -- to $162M compared to last year's $159.7M.
FRIDAY AM: Sacha Baron Cohen has done it again. Based on $1.6 million in post-midnight shows in nearly 700 theaters this morning, and pre-sales for its weekend release into 2,757 North American theaters, Brüno looks like a big hit for Universal. "If it holds up, we'll do $50 million," one insider tells me. "Yet this is a movie that people may or may not attend spontaneously." That's double the $25M to $27M which Universal and even rival studios have been predicting for the mockumentary's weekend debut. Others tell me that $30+M still seems way more realistic.
Significantly, the studio picked up its portion of the movie's rights before Sacha's previous Borat was a bonafide blockbuster. It paid Media Rights Capital, which underwrote the entire cost of the low-budget production, $42.5 million to control 82% of the world distribution of the film in advance of the release of 2006's Borat, a move that Hollywood openly questioned at the time. Because for that Uni had no creative control over Brüno, no say over budget (it was presented as take-it-or-leave-it). And the studio doesn't even own the negative. ("Plus," a source emails me, "Sasha travels like Jay Z with a huge entourage etc, so the expense of the tour alone is huge, not to mention what they've spent to market it.") MRC owns the movie and sold the remaining markets so they are already in profit.
Then again, back when 20th Century Fox opened Borat, Hollywood also questioned whether that studio had left money on the table by suddenly slashing back its release to just 837 theaters cherry-picked in big cities and college towns. The pic went on to make a stunning $26.4M its opening weekend (and went on to earn $128.5M domestic and another $133M foreign), indicating that moviegoers were virtually sitting in the aisles. But Brüno ist no Borat even though the tracking underestimated the wannasee on both films. My question is now whether audiences realize what a "Hard R"-rated movie they're about to attend. Because there are numerous in-your-face scenes of full frontal male nudity and male genitalia involving Cohen's Austrian gay character from his HBO Ali G show, all meant to shock moviegoers as much as make them laugh. (I think Sasha's penis needs its own agent: it should have received at least 2nd billing on Brüno.) But that's not even hinted at in the heavy television ad rotation. (Though Sasha's bare-assed antics with Eminem at the MTV awards certainly gave potential filmgoers an eyeful of what was to come...) Will word of mouth be depressed when less accepting areas of the country see this stuff? Believe me when I say that Universal execs had been worrying about this. Nevertheless, the controversy over Brüno's portrayal of homosexuals and heterosexuals has only been good for the pic. Not only did Sasha and Universal market the hell out of the controversy, but they even exploited the recent ridiculous pronouncement of the Austrian foreign minister to Great Britain calling for a boycott of the film because it demeans der Fatherland.
Brüno opened day and date overseas in all the territories which Universal controls on this film: English-speaking countries like the UK, Australia, South Africa, as well as Germany, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. Media Rights Capital and Sony have the rest. The pic posted a record opening in Australia, for instance. Universal said the final number was $1.6M, making Brüno the 2nd biggest opening day of the year, behind only Transformers 2, and the 3rd best comedy opening in Australia ever, trailing the 2004 Boxing Day opening of Meet the Fockers and last year's Sex And The City. "Then again, Australia is a progressive country," one Uni exec noted to me.

I hope not
I love the fact that I don’t want to see male genitalia in my face makes me less “progressive”. Nikki sometimes you really show your Hollywood liberal colors.
What is shocking about prancing around pretending to be gay?
This ass-clown is not funny and we are in the age of humor as weapon. All he can do is try to shock people because nothing is funny in a society as open as ours.
Save your money people and go see The Hangover again.
“Obama sucks”, “neoCons rule”, blah, blah, blah.
There, now that we got that crap out of the way, maybe we can discuss the movie? You just know with this page being linked at Drudge, the knuckle draggers and mouth breathers (aka Faux News viewers) are going to be in a lather about a jewish actor portraying a gay guy.
Get lost neoCons!
It’s like clockwork — a link goes up on The Drudge Report and all the right-wing nutjobs show up here to comment.
“All he can do is try to shock people because nothing is funny in a society as open as ours.”
Oh, there’s plenty that’s funny about America. That well’s never going to run dry.
And we’re not as open as we pretend to be.
Cohen is working the Howard Stern formula to perfection. Unfortunately, these jerks grease the skids in our cultural slide to depravity.
I’m a right winger and I think Cohen is funny.
Funnier than Al Franken or what’s his name from The Daily Show.
Dude he made Borat… Bruno has got to be great!
I think Sasha’s act is getting old. Other than G.I. Joes, is the blockbuster season already over? Lame.
Too shocking. The only folks who were knocking down the theatre doors to see this were gay. Everyone even remotely hetero will wait till it comes out in DVD.
Neocon mouthbreathers? As a self-professed neocon, I find a LOT of Cohen’s humor hilarious in the same exact way as Candid Camera was roll on the floor funny. The AliG show was a riot because people didn’t realize they were being used to lampoon themselves and Cohen skewers everyone of all stripes with his guerilla tactics.
I’ll likely see this pic, though I probably won’t laugh at the privates being in my face, just as the least funny parts of Borat were the staged portions without unsuspecting participants (such as the awful bed wrestling scene). As my wife noted after watching a couple of bits from AliG show, Cohen should stick to his candid camera stuff, ditch the solo staged “shock Jock” junk, and he’d rake in even more $$$.
Ha HA. PJ said “nut job.” Is that a Freudian slip, loser?
To Irish Rover…
Your post makes zero sense. None. “You just know with this page being linked at Drudge, the knuckle draggers and mouth breathers (aka Faux News viewers) are going to be in a lather about a jewish actor portraying a gay guy”
Yes, becuase it’s always “neo cons” complaining about gays being made fun of???? Also, the Irish never have anything bad to say about Jews, right? You all love that Jesus but hate them Jews.
Now apparently Drudge is where all them “neocons” (BTW neocons is also a slight at Jews) go. I guess because he broke the Lewinski story he is in bed with neocons…Holy CR#*!!! I guess he should have hid that story and be more like the good people at MSLSD.
So, your angry at FOX news, but also angry at Drudge for running a true story. Don’t ya’ just LOVE them socialists?
I found this through drudge and I am ring-wing and I can’t wait to see this movie tonight! Sasha Cohen is amazing
Bruno was a riot on letterman. He is laughing all the way to the bank and we are all jelous.
what a pathetic excuse for a movie…
I came through here on Drudge Report (and yes I’m a Conservative), but I loved this movie. I saw it last night and while there is plenty of shock humor (which usually makes me laugh), it is still real creative and you can see Cohen’s talent on display.
However, I don’t think your Liberal and Conservative references in your post are very applicable here. Its more a matter if you are comfortable with male nudity. I think its unfair (and typical of Hollywood elitism) to insinuate that you have to be “open minded” and “progressive” to understand a movie like this.
You think this is funny? You ought to see Gay Freedom Day in San Francisco.
It makes Bruno look like Sesame Street.
PJ: OMG you are like clockwork. Waa waaa waa.
If a con shows up to the party you panic. If a con speaks his opinion, you load up your pants with waste.
Sorry to burst into your private party here. lol
Until the next time…see ya.
It should be a funny movie, but I’m surprised that the politically correct, liberal thought police would approve of a movie making fun of everyone.
I read both Nicki’s column and Drudge regularly and I think she does a very good job of not letting her personal views get in the way of the stories and of posting stories from both sides.
I’m not going to see Bruno, but not because of some gay agenda, just because I don’t think it looks good at all. Borat, despite being incredibly backwards, was a likable character, and Bruno just seems obnoxious. Are the people in the movie who react negatively to Bruno trying to take of their clothes and kiss them homophobic or just reacting normally? I think the latter.
Seems like Hollywood can’t take what it dishes out. Bruno is funny. Does he make fun of Gays and progressives, hell yes. Does he make fun of Rednecks and conservatives, hell yes. Oh, and all those freaks at the Daily Kos have showed up. They are such Commie fun haters. They can never take a joke at their expense.
The only question is whether the liberal cadre who follow every link from Drudge to make their pronouncement are being paid, or if they are volunteers.
Tired. Irrelevant. Move On, guys.
Even the ads about this movie make me sad, not angry….not motivated to go. Just sad. How we have fallen in this country (that we say we love) and as a result of our depravity, are reaping a whirlwind of consequences in our economy, families, environment, emotions, etc. When we consider that this man? is marketing himself and his body in ways that may appear funny…but are also insulting (to not just gays, but Blacks, married couples, etc)….it is just sad. I would not spend a dine and hope that it fails to achieve even close to the forecasted revenues.
A link gets posted on Drudge about a very successful actor raking in a ton of money on opening night by giving the public exactly what they crave, and you think we’ll have a problem with it???
You have us confused with people who want everyone to like only what they like, and if they don’t they’re wrong. (most liberals)
We, on the other hand, want everybody to enjoy whatever they want.
If you wish to see it, by all means, it’s your money.
If you don’t, don’t insult those who do.
Capitalism wins again!!!
Personally, I’m gonna see it
ha ha ha!!! just cant wait to see what the rest of the LEFTWING whack job will have to say about this. im sure this movie will be praised as much as they have for the messiah borack hussien obama.. not much diffrence in between the 2 really..
I hope Cohen pocks fun at con and libs next. Its a untapped gold mine of idoicy and whining humor. Of course, the big joke is no one who enjoys this movie will be thinking about politics while watching. Learn to lighten up. And, Drudge usually has some movie news up.
And hate to say it, but cons loved Borat because its just like old Bob Hope in a dress.
Bruno is gay Eurotrash. If you enjoy looking at gay Eurotrash you will love this movie.
I can’t wait to see this. If it’s half as funny as Borat then it’ll do good. If it’s more so, then we’re talking blockbuster status.
Irish Rover,
who pissed in your kool-aid? not all drudge readers are what you think. i’ve been watching cohen’s shit since ali g. i think he is funny. u can try to lump all drudge readers in one group but it isn’t true. he is jewish!!! oh nooo!!! please. give it up. i guess im anti-semitic cuz irish rover knows everything.
Why doesn’t Cohen demean his own country?
Scoresman, got a tattoo.
I’m thinking to top this off Cohen can make film about a secret CIA department that cooks up right wing leaning intelligence to support the corporate war machine.
Oh wait…
PJ and Irish Rover
I’m sorry. Are dissenting opinions not allowed in your little universe? This isn’t exactly the Algonquin roundtable. And if it was, you’d likely be the ones clearing the plates after dinner. As I’ve never seen either of you post anything even remotely intelligent.
I tried to watch Borat, but thought the fat guy jerking off in the hotel room was just classless and unfunny so I stopped watching. If the rest of the movie had been funny I might have continued watching, but I hate sitting too long through a “comedy” waiting for something funny to happen. The commercials for Bruno look funny, but that’s b/c it looks more like a documentary than a mockumentary. He seems to have captured the ethos of the freakish gay narcissist perfectly. He should have named his character Perez or Harvey, though.
I love how you libs mention the drudge report as our (conservatives) segway into this article…the answer is “yes”, I did come here from the drudge report link, but how would you know about it unless you saw the link for yourself? Liberals go to the drudge report because there is only so much vitriol that you can take in one day from liberal media outlets. If the reason you go is to “humor yourself”, like i am sure many of you would say, then you have played into the elitist label that we republicans give you.
I love that just because we have an oppinion and choose to share it, all a sudden we’re ‘right wing nut jobs’
Isn’t everyone in our society a nut job at this point? I’m pretty sure there’s no such thing as open morality any more…
For every BORAT and BRUNO we’ll have to suffer thru a hundred JACKASSES.
MTV destroyed film and TV, spawning horrors from Morton Downey Jr to Jerry Springer, etc. Any fool disgusting enough will get his 15 minutes of fame.
Toilet jokes will always we funny – right?
Ask Daddy Day Care.
Stare into the toilet, find humor.
How disgusting. Reviews are terrible and the man is basically not funny. I hope Americans aren’t that bored to pay money to see this film. This is not acting, it is not comedy and it is just bad.
I found this through Drudge. The comments here are very angry. Too bad people can’t be open minded (Oh, and yes I meant you!).
Stern and Cohen are making us laugh.
Sanford and Ensign and the rest of the born again and full of craps are the ones greasing the skids in our cultural slide to depravity, my friend.
Look, I am a conservative and I happen to like Sasha’s humor as well as South Park, and others. I think the brain needs a break now and then. I even think Gary Larson’s unpublished Far Side comics about God and Jesus were hilarious.
My only issue with this shock comedy is that they are disingenuous. They (Sasha, Bill Mahr, that fat dude, etc.) criticize, shock, and embarrass Christians, Europeans, conservatives, etc. only because they know they won’t get killed over it or put into jail. They know we can take a joke. So what? I laugh at myself all the time.
But it’s disingenuous because you never see them making fun of Islam or Muslims in general. And there is A LOT more to make fun of there: Mohammad at 49 marrying Aisha at 6 years old, Islam being peaceful until its numbers grew more than the local Jews then it was forever war, more Muslims die at the hands of other Muslims more than all causes of death combined, treatment of women, “honor” killings, the fact that Muslims hate Palestinians more than Jews do, people are killed for drawing Mohammad, people are killed for leaving Islam, and on and on. All that seems serious but ALL THAT MENTIONED could easily be turned into parody by Sasha, Bill Mahr, SNL, etc. But they don’t.
They don’t only because they are afraid. They turn to bashing conservatism and european religion because it is EASY. That is the only gripe conservatives have. We also laugh at Sasha and South Park. We like a good laugh, too. But conservatives also openly laugh at the hypocrasy of Islam as a religion of peace. Hollywood doesn’t have the Bruno balls to laugh along yet. I give South Park credit for trying more than anyone else.
Now back to lounging in my Mohammad holding a bomb T-Shirt.
I’m not sure I want his penis in my face. Does that make me homophobic? Probably not because there are plenty of Vaginas I don’t want to see either.
Scoresman, got a tattoo
Linked to Drudge – brace yourselves for the mouth breathers from fly-over country!
Well seeing that this movie could only appeal to those whose IQ is lower than 60, I’m sure it will do quite well in the U.S.
“Well seeing that this movie could only appeal to those whose IQ is lower than 60, I’m sure it will do quite well in the U.S.”
So you’re saying it’s gonna be a huge hit with Drudge readers and Republicans?
I think it’s funny all the “right-wing” and “oh, another Drudge visitor” bashing going on! How would you know the link is on Drudge unless you were on Drudge . . . MEANING, Drudge is sending in Right AND Left wingers to Nikki’s blog. IMHO, leave politics out of these comments and comment on the post and film.
As a gay conservative, i can’t wait to see Bruno. Im also excited to see Obama’s poll numbers falling down to earth and the fact that people are realizing that his programs will do nothing but harm the nation. Maybe Sasha’s next character needs to be a black liberal politician. He could travel to California and New York to do the interviews. There’s no shortage of idiodic liberals in both places. Start at the state capitals.
Jasper,
I’ve seen the movie. Bruno pokes fun at radical Islam and terrorist culture, too. He’s pretty much an equal opportunity offender.
closed minded, intolerant lib-fucks yell: PREPARE FOR THE MOUTHBREATHING DRUDGE BOTS!
what follows? most of the people who came in here through drudge say they are gonna see it and think cohen is FUNNY (I too think cohen is funny) and I think liberals are the most closed minded, intolerant, dipshit, sheeple motherfuckers out there!
hey moe-rons go and watch bill maher and daily show to know what to think
leave the real thinking to us DRUDGE BOTS!!
watchin’ bruno tonight and am prepped to laugh my ass off!
closed minded liberal bigots are real assholes!
I thought this movie was riot, sure its a no brainer, but so was Borat, but hey most movies today are no brainers and lack story, so what does this tell us, like anything else in this world its how much money can I make, if people pay to see something like this so be it.
Came to comments to see what people thought of the movie and read nothing but hate.It would seem if your not gay or a prev your just not accepted in todays society.
Just shows you what “inbreeding” can do to ones opinion, and its not just in the US,we are just catching up to the rest of the world.
The mindless adherents to the left and the right equally annoy me, but I don’t mind the Drudge visitors at DHD. It brings traffic to DHD that in turn helps ensure that there is a DHD to visit.
Quick corrections to a few mindlessly incorrect posts: The reviews are overwhelmingly positive for Bruno overall by a margin that is slightly less than 3 to 1, and no one masturbates in this movie.
Another “neocon” who finds Sacha hilarious. Bite me, pidgeon-holing lefties.
I’m a conservative who didn’t need to find this story through Drudge, because I am a regular reader of DHD. Even we right-wingers enjoy keeping up with what’s going on in “the industry”. (”Neocons” probably do, too; I wouldn’t know because I’m not Jewish. You lefties still throwing the word around in 2009 really ought to take the time to find out what it means.)
I never miss the comments here, either; DHD has easily the most interesting and downright entertaining comments section of any site I frequent. Many of the posters here are intelligent and informative professionals; others are wannabes who talk about “our industry” when what they mean is “I’m working at an In-N-Out somewhere in Orange County while I get my screenplay together.” The combination is always a lot of fun.
If I were Nikki I’d be thrilled to be linked to Drudge. Aside from the frequent links to specific DHD stories, Drudge has this site included in his long list of standing links to bloggers and columnists both left and right; everyone from George Will to Paul Krugman. Aside from the respect for Nikki and DHD this shows on his part, it must also bring in a massive amount of traffic.
Thank you for DHD, Nikki!
If hollywood keeps its trends of giving the oscar to straight actors playing gay characters..then they better give one to Sacha Baron Cohen.
Heck! He is a 100 times better actor than Sean Penn, that I can tell you..
Bruno will open big. I predict somewhere btw 35M to 42M
this movie is another in a very long line of hollywood cramming homosexuality down our throats. it’s disgusting– we fight a war in iraq to fight terrorism and give people freedom, but hollywood instead focuses on gay rights, pathetic.
I saw Bruno and Beth cooper — I wonder how Bruno will play in middle america — could this be the most successful gay movie ever? Lots of male nudity and sexual acts, which for a mainstream movie opening in more than 2500 theaters is pretty progressive, so if you are not prepared for that, I don’t know there might be a lot of walkouts. I didn’t really see it as anti-gay but they did seem to make it pretty clear why prop 8 was not passed in one talk show scene but maybe it was just written that way.
Beth cooper was just not fun — great actors, I got more interested because it was directed by Home Alone’s Chris Columbus.
Away we Go is one of the best of the year, along with Star Trek, Up and The Proposal and transformers 2.
Hey, I’m gay, and I loved the film. Cohen becomes the stereo-type Homobigots have of gay people. First that we are sex-obsessed. Bruno tries to come on to just about every man in the movie, even Ron Paul, who has to shout out, “He’s a Queer”!. He also satirizes the fear that we will corrupt straight society’s children. Bruno is incredibly shallow which is another stereotype our community endures, not that there are not superficial, sex crazed queens running around.
The scenes of Sascha having the most extreme anal sex with his pygmy lover are priceless.
Could this be the next Michael Jackson, but actually a ‘gay’.
Good going America, keep lowering that IQ.
When you support this crap all you get out of it is more schit.
well if the intense advertising is any clue, the movie will be a flop. hollywood always spends a lot to advertize flops since a good movie needs little advertising. so sick of the “buzz” and commercials on a sick movie.
I saw the 12:30 am showing and loved it. I linked through Drudge and am conservative. I cant wait to buy the dvd.
Hi -
I am right wing conservative and I find Sasha Cohen quite funny. I won’t go to the movie, I don’t do R-rated flicks, however, his trailer had me howling!!!
I like people that can laugh at themselves – he makes fun of all levels of people…come on people – we’re all crazy in our own right – just own up to it and lighten up.
Borat stunk, stunk and stunk some more. This Cohen dude is a weasel and he got bitch slapped in New York City for pulling his act on someone who didn’t know his worthless act.
Don’t waste your money on Bruno. If you have an IQ over 65 you will it boring.
Irish Rover, you have a problem with conservatives? Who cares. The movie sucks because the actor sucks. To hell with Bruno.
If the DHD comments section is anything to go by, Hollywood is made up almost entirely of angry Republicans who hate Hollywood.
Thanks, Hank Yablonski. Proving just how bigoted the Left is.
went and saw the movie. it was funny and stupid and relied on lockerroom banter other than that the movie suc%^d. also dont know no’s but my theater on a fri day night was barely 15% full while next door proposal was over 90%, its been out for weeks i know i gaught caught sneaking in. lol had to pay for the ticket. any way i have seen it 3 times. as for bruno once is enough as the water cooler bantor will be. out on dvd by christmas. why i dont know. basically sick humor while not advancing gay rights.in fact it made you guys look sick and pathetic.
This is a movie you neocon, liberal, whatever morons. Either buy a ticket or don’t but PLEASE learn how to spell. It helps get your point accross more effectively.
Saw it this afternoon. It was more shock than fun or funny. The MPAA is a joke for giving this thing an R when it is blatant X rated material. Yeah, I did laugh a lot, but I also wanted to puke a few times.
Meanwhile in Texas, 3 gay men were kicked out of a bar for kissing each other.
I LOVED Borat and saw it several times but have to say I was very disappointed with Bruno. I saw it this week at the screening and was shocked by the amount of nudity. Yes, we all know the shock value in Sasha’s work but my feeling is this movie went over the top. It became downright offensive in many scenes–starting with that very gross opening. Clever at moments, too, but overall a disgusting and uncomfortable picture.
I’m a right wing nut in Dallas. I got to this page via Drudge. Just saw Borat an hour ago. FUNNY as hell!!!
Funnier than those those humorless three turds Al Frankin, Wanda Sykes and Bill Marr.
Not sure what all the political jabs are about or what the actual point is…I’m a conservative and I think this guy is crazy funny. PEOPLE, quit getting butt hurt, Sacha Baron Cohen is making millions doing something that is funny…good for him!!!
Of course Drudge Report readers would love Brüno. After all, they’re used to gobbling up the recycled output of a homosexual caricature.
I found DHD three years ago through Drudge and come to it on my own frequently. A lot of media people and internet news gatherers follow both sites.
So about Bruno. It was awful and cant believe it got rave reviews. This is coming from a movie snob guy like me who thought Cohen should have won the Best Actor Oscar for Borat. That was an organic movie, this was rigged. What a dreadful excuse for comedy. Progressive!?!? The future is bleak for movies.
Ali g movie, indahood,, was soo funny,
word on the street: people are walking out. Not just in the US, either. Global consensus?
I just got out of the movie and found it to be hilarious. Sure, Borat and Bruno are meant to shock and awe, but if you are out for an evening of entertainment, then it comes highly recommended. There isn’t anything political about this film, it’s funny, creative, intended for an adult audience (trust me on this), and that is all. If it’s not your cup of tea, it’s a free country, don’t go see it. It might be all Rush and Sean during the week, but tonight it was all Bruno.
I’m not planning on seeing it, and I think Cohen is very smart, creative and funny…
But if Cohen did Al Jolson’s black face, you KNOW there would be huge issues about his parody of racism… and rightfully so.
That’s how I feel about this. His parody of internal and external homophobia doesn’t create understanding. It just pours gasoline on the fires already smoldering.
Politically correctness is killing art..BRUNO rocks!!!
I hate when Matt Drudge Links to anything – Lots of white trash comments. Despite what you drudge-bots have to say, Bruno is good for America because Americans are much too Homophobic.
I look forward to 20 years from now, when this debate is long over and sexuality won’t matter. Because that day will come.
To the conservatives–glad so many of you liked “Bruno.” PJ & Irish Rover had a valid reason for complaining, though: deadline hollywood daily is a site widely read by industry professionals, because Nikki Finke is one of the best in the business. A lot of the conversations on here are apolitical–strictly about the business & art of the industry–until you guys show up. It always goes something like this:
DHD Regular Commenter #1: Wow the Academy Awards just increased their best picture nominees from 5 to 10. Wonder if that’s going to increase UP’s chances for a nom.
DHD Regular #2: Or Michael Mann’s Public Enemies. It’s better than the reviews would have you think.
DHD #3: Eh, I’m not a big fan of the whole 5 to 10 thing. It’s going to dilute the pool. If “No Country for Old Men” can win, and “There Will Be Blood” can get nominated, why change anything?
Drudge visitor: this is proof the oscars are stupid liberal elitsts sean penn sux
DHD #1: Uh, Sean Penn’s almost certainly not going to be nominated this year, since he just won last year.
Drudge visitor: SEAN PENN SUCKS!
DHD #1: But surely the technical challenge of playing Harvey Milk deserves some sort of notice–
Drudge visitor: hollywood ramming stupid gay values down my throat
Drudge visitor 2: i hate michael moore u loozers go watch that guy on the daily show
DHD #2: Michael Moore’s also probably not going to be nominated for Best Documentary, since he’s already won… did you see “Encounters at the End of the World?” Herzog?
drudge visitor 3: I don’t watch the Oscars anymore, that’s why their ratings are down because they nominated stupid elitist liberal crap, I don’t like having that liberal elitist liberal crap shoved down my throat like Brokeback Mountain
DHD #3: Well, yeah, but surely Ang Lee deserved the Best Director award; and Larry McMurtry did a bang-up job with the screenplay. It was a tricky piece to adapt–
drudge visitor 4: i hate liberals!!! hollywood sux?
DHD #4: Well, surely you guys liked WALL-E. It made hundreds of millions of dollars, was the best film of the year, and was one of the only–I mean, EVERYBODY likes Pixar stuff. Right?
drudge visitor (any): WALL-E was “leftist propaganda about the evils of mankind,” national review told me so.

DHD Regular 5: Oh dear Christ.
Think I’m exaggerating? One random comment about “the messiah borack hussien obama,” one inexplicable reference to “daily kos freaks” (?!?), one complaint about baron cohen not making fun of muslims when, in fact, he makes fun of everyone–them included, another complaining about Bill Maher (and not spelling his name correctly), when, in fact, Maher’s been one of the few people to actually take Islam *on* in his documentary Religulous, one claiming the film “crams homosexuality down our throats,” and one comment from someone completely ignorant of how hollywood advertising works: “hollywood always spends a lot to advertize flops since a good movie needs little advertising.” Right. That’s why L.A. Confidential had no advertising budget.
AND THAT’S JUST IN THIS COMMENT THREAD.
Look, if John Milius, and Warren Bell, and Rob Long showed up here–NR-writing hard-core conservatives all–showed up here, I would have ABSOLUTELY NO OBJECTION. You know why? Because they actually work in Hollywood and know what the frack they’re talking about. In fact, I love Rob Long’s “Martini Shot” and make a point of listening to it every week. I have a great deal of respect for Bell & had a very nice email exchange with him once. It’s not that you guys are conservative. It’s that you’re conservatives who don’t know anything about Hollywood or how the movie industry works, and you pollute conversations from people who want to talk about the complex forces that are buffeting the industry without having to read through “ha ha ha it’s all the liberals’ fault.” You’re angry and resentful over something, you’ve bought into convenient, dishonest propaganda about how “we” hate “America,” and you want to yell and scream about it.
Fine. But not here.
And no, I’m not trying to censor you; I don’t have the power to do that. I’m trying to explain something. This is a site read by industry professionals, and, as was demonstrated in the writer’s strike, one of the most important and reliable sites around. Do any of you even know why we specifically respect Nikki Finke so much, as compared to Variety and/or the Hollywood Reporter? That’s my question for anyone coming here via Drudge. (Hint: It has to do with Nikki Finke’s impartial, objective coverage of the WGA, as compared with Variety’s strikingly dishonest coverage, which has to do with the money they make from film advertising.)
If you want to participate in the conversation, know something about how the movie industry works, and come prepared to actually talk about the business. You can bash liberals all over the web. This is a place for business. If you don’t like the movies, don’t come. If you don’t like the Oscars, don’t jump on posts to tell us how much you hate them because of the “liberal” movies that are nominated. There are only 5,000 members of the Academy (out of hundreds of thousands who work in the industry), and they’re mostly retired actors. We don’t like some of their choices either (American Beauty for Best Pic while Being John Malkovich didn’t even get nominated?!), but we know enough not to think of the Academy as an evil monolith out to insult real Americans.
And then maybe we can have intelligent conversations about the movie biz.
“Several rival studios emailed me tonight that the Michael Mann/Johnny Depp biopic of John Dillinger won’t make it to $100M domestic continuing Universal’s string of summer disappointments.”
You wanna bet ??? It will make it to 100M domestic AND what will make it profitable is the huge overseas that is expected to kick in. I think it will be around 105-110 domestic and around 120-160 overseas.
AND I am not a fan of any of the actors, that was just simply a decent movie for adults starring actors with huge international appeal.
Just because the second weekend wasn’t spectacular, it doesn’t mean it won’t make it to 100M (especially since it will be around 70M for Monday), it only means it won’t be another Hangover……..and that rival studio execs hope it won’t do well.
2 things
- his penis is in ONE 30 second scene. it was uncomfortable but i did glance up in time to see it talk
- all you conservative douche bags who don’t know what you’re talking about: he’s an equal opportunity satirist. he DOES make fun of islam (since that’s all you want in life) bin ladin, terrorists, the gay liberal fashion world, especially hollywood (that’s the main plot point.) lighten the fuck up.
Wow. 24 hours ago, Nikki was talking about the possibility of a $50 million dollar opening for Bruno. Now, possibly not even $40. And a “C” cinemascore. Ouch!!!! I enjoyed Borat, and will reserve judgement on Bruno until I see it. But, still.
All y’all who don’t like this movie are a bunch of unfunny boobs. Left or Right, get over your tired and cliche aversion to a little bit of male nudity and learn to love a true master of his craft.
Came over from Drudge, saw the movie last night, it was hilarious!!
He seems to be going against his fans of Borat — lots of outrageous sex and male nudity and a romantic kiss. In the end, I think this movie has a better story than Borat.
There’s a scene in there, that makes Meg Ryan’s orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally look like child’s play.
It’s sad that this seems so new. Rick Mercer, Canada’s answer to Jon Stewart, did a special called “Talking to Americans”. He guerilla interviewed people and told them things that couldn’t be true and they played along. It was hysterical and came long before SBC.
Proving people are as dumb as they want to be is a tried and true and USED form of comedy.
TG – You didn’t have to tell us you came in from Drudge, you gave it away by how you spelled “segue”.
Ken P – You’re a “gay conservative”? Isn’t that an oxymoron? Considering, of course, that Republicans & conservatives would prefer you not even exist.
Bruno Sucks – “cramming homosexuality down our thorats”? Nice choice of words.
Phantom – I liked PUBLIC ENEMIES too, but if it dropped that much it can’t hit $100 million. It’ll come out of this weekend at $64m, not $70m. If it keeps dropping like that, it’ll end up closer to $80m.
Drew – I’m sure when you walk into the theater to see BRUNO, your knuckles will be scraping the ground.
Cottereaux – Your reasoning about movie marketing makes you beyond clueless.
Greg Machlin – “intelligent conversations about the movie biz”? Not when there’s a Drudge link involved.
Armand – We know you’re a DrudgeBot, since you couldn’t get through your comment without a Sean Penn slam.
Hmm I thought Bruno’s opening would be closer to $40- $50mill with that huge midnight. Even The Hangover made over $40mil and it’s midnight was much smaller in comparison. Oh well it’s still a big success for the studio because of it’s small budget, but how will it’s legs hold up next week when HP comes out ? Also T2 is still holding well for a flick that dropped 60% in it’s second week. 400mill is well within reach for it. Also to those who say PE won’t make 100mill that’s ridicoulous. The movie will be at $70mill by the end of this weekend.
Peace Out !
God damn it, could you PLEASE keep this ridiculous, divisive liberal vs. conservative GARBAGE off this site? Does every facet of our lives have to be framed as red vs. blue? It’s tiresome and counterproductive.
There are a zillion websites that exist solely to pit Americans vs. Americans for cynical profits. Does this have to be yet another one?
Greg Machlin — you have waaaay too much time on your hands. And Nikki’s the only one talking shop here, you out of work actors and writers don’t add much, except when you’re on a libby tirade about the evil greedy producers who end up not employing you.
I saw the movie last night and it was hilarious. Sometimes, it was hard to hear the dialogue because people were laughing so loudly.
As a movie, it can legitimately be criticized on a number of fronts. It would be interesting to read those critiques without all of the “neocon”, “socialist” nonsense thrown into the comments.
While Borat focused on showing people be mean and intolerant, Bruno often did the opposite, showing people to be surprisingly tolerant in the face of outrageous behavior.
The movie is intended to shock people. If you are offended by shocking behavior or it makes you feel like the country is falling apart, do yourself a favor and stay home. If you can watch a movie without taking it personally, come laugh for 90 minutes.
To Greg Machlin,
I’m no industry regular, but I agree with everything you wrote. Never been out to Drudge a day in my life-I found Nikki’s site during the writers strike, intrigued regarding what all the fuss was about. Got a great education and a real feel as to how the industry works and since then, Niiki’s blog has fed my Hollywood curiosity nicely.
Rarely do I make a comment, but I have to say one of the reasons I come here is because even though I don’t agree w/everything written, it still seems to be a place where folks try hard to be half-way civil. Here’s hoping that it stays that way….
Whats all this about the Drudge Report? its a great news source. But back to the movie, it was great too.
