I’m told that Mumbai’s Reliance folks are making the rounds of New York media this week — they wanted a meeting with The New York Times, for instance, and hit up Fortune for a puff piece – in advance of the announcement that DreamWorks 2.0 has secured its lender financing covering at least 3 years of film production. With Reliance Big Entertainment kicking in $300M of credit for a matching amount in equity funding, and distribution partner Disney lending up to $175M, and JP Morgan Chase leading the loan syndication with several other banks for a total $325M-$350M, Steven Spielberg’s and Stacey Snider’s will become a Hollywood buyer soon enough. For background see my, DreamWorks About To Announce Debt Financing.

Nikki, love the site and your postings, but your Reliance pictures are a little bit racially insensitive. It’s either the DreamWorks gang wearing Indian turbans or Mickey&Minnie at the Taj Mahal in saris. I didn’t see pictures of the WMA board animated with yarmulkes and dreidels when Ari took over and I haven’t seen African-Americans in minstrel outfits with jungle backgrounds on your site. This is no different. I think the handful of Indians in this business would appreciate some less childish stereotyping, thank you.
Although I appreciate ur prickily nature Nikki, StereoCom up above has a point. But StereoCom, U gotta admit Steven in a turban is sorta funny… As for the charm offensive, is it towards the Hwood Community to make sure that DreamWorks is still alive and well? After all, with a $1B+ to its name, does DWorx really NEED to advertise?
Mickey & Minnie in traditional garb is cute! Steve & Stacey in tradition headdresses is adorable! The Taj Mahal is a major cultural landmark of India. If Steve got the money from unsuspecting Englishmen, you know they’d be wearing bowlers and standing before Big Ben. And if the cash came from Israel, yeah, yarmulkes all around. If they got the money from Nigerian email scammers, of course, festive geles and filas.
Modern Indian-Americans (and Pakistani-Americans, for that matter) are intelligent, funny people. “Apu” is a somewhat hurtful stereotype, but “Kumar” and “Raj” get some love from the Indian kids.
And speaking of stereotyping, Ari is an American. He probably only dons a yamulke a few times a year. For his “Joos Control the World” meetings.
Bit o’ Trivia: Stacey Snyder’s college roomate was Wendy Finerman the producer and Oscar winner for Forrest Gump.
Thank you.
