When I get back from vacation. Frankly, I usually find the Academy Of Television Arts & Science nods to be bone-headed. Is this year the rule, or the exception? What with NBC’s 30 Rock receiving 22 nominations, HBO’s Grey Gardens getting 17 , AMC’s Mad Men 16, and HBO’s Into The Storm 14?

Will the exception of the Friday Night Lights omission, I think it’s a pretty solid list — especially in the comedy categories.
seems as though this year it is very clear that network tv is in BIG trouble….a majority of nods going to cable shows…..maybe now they will get their heads out of their asses and start producing real tv again….or….maybe not…..would be a shame though…
The fact that Michael Chikliss did not get nominated and neither did Shawn Ryan for the finale of “The Shield” is insane… come on!!! WTF? Four Mad Men’s…I mean really….The show is good but….really 4 nods in writing. Come on, people, we have lost our minds.
We need a better system. As a whole, the nominations are an embarrassment – a true popularity contest. Who can take this ‘honor’ seriously?
Both true blood and battlestar galatica were not nominated. Why do they have such a problem with Science Fiction and fantasy as genres?
This year was, sadly, no exception. The final season of The Shield was one of its best (which hardly ever happens, most long-running shows limp to the finish line in their final season), and should have received, at the least, nominations for Best Drama, Best Actor (Chikilis) and Best Supporting Actor (Walton Goggins). But what did it get? Zilch, nada. While 30 Rock received 22 nominations. I like 30 Rock, but this season was its weakest, IMO, too reliant on stunt casting rather than being funny.
I hope Lost wins the writing category against the 4 Mad Men episodes just to stick it to them.
TRUE BLOOD wasn’t nominated because it is terrible.
MAD MEN deserves every kudo it got.
I’m disappointed that Californication and David Duchovny didn’t get nods. I don’t understand how it can be nominated for the other awards and completely shut out here. Aren’t they all supposedly watching the same material? I wont even go into how overlooked Evan Handler and Pamela Adlon are.
How is it possible that Tina Fey’s crapfest “30 Rock” garners all the nominations and the truly hilarious, moving, brilliantly written, cast, directed and acted “Big Bang Theory” gets just one nom for the amazing Jim Parsons and NONE in writing? The black leader that starts off every episode of Big Bang is one hundered times funnier than any entire episode of 30 Rock.
Mad Men deserves 4 writing nods. It’s the BEST out there. Period. And the acting is superb. It’s a work of art.
But you guys are right, The Shield should have gotten a nod of some kind. Especially since these shows are too often just about giving certain people their due rather than what’s truly great.
I’ve seen an overly grateful non-conventionally beautiful Tina Fey on stage before, I don’t need to see it again. And last season was the worst season of The Office. Terrible.
STILL no love for USA’s “Psych”??? Lame.
hey nicki,
i can’t read the headline of this article because the pop-up advertisements are blocking it.
but I’m glad you didn’t sell-out.
HA!
They need to do something about the noms in categories like writing – 4 noms for 1 show?! How about just nominating for the entire season – the writer’s room is a collaborative process anyway, with perhaps many scribes having touches on each script, so awarding a show for a whole season and a body of work, makes more sense anyway. Surely, there are more than TWO (?!) shows on tv worth recognizing for their stories. Same goes for the comedy category – only 2 shows worth it?! lame
Did someone just post a glowing review of Big Bang Theory? Are you insane? Is this the rapture?
Glad to see Grey Gardens recognized. It’s a shame it didn’t hit theaters first, I think both Lange and Barrymore would be frontrunners for Best Actress.
But..Family Guy…outstanding comedy series? Seriously?!?!
How did Denis Leary not get nominated for Rescue Me? HE IS BRINGING IT SO HARD THIS YEAR!!! And not for just the comedy his dramatic skills are amazing. He has made me cry for those firefighters in New York. INSANE
“The Shield” and “ER” both had outstanding final seasons and excellent finales. These groundbreaking dramas had stellar casts and solid writing. These omissions are shocking. Unbelievable.
I’ve been saying that Jim Parsons from The Big Bang Theory deserves an Emmy. I’m glad to see he was nominated…… and he totally deserves to win. I’m also happy about HIMYM as that show is very clever and different than most laugh track comedies.
We should have 10 slots like the Oscars that way we can have a popularity contest and then we can also have people included who deserve it.
Rescue me not nominated…STUPID
It’s the same every year – the Emmy’s are a jerkfest – and can’t be taken seriously when one of the greatest shows of all time – The Wire – never even got a sniff at the Best Drama category
FG nominated for Best Comedy is a joke. I would’ve liked to see South Park nominated for Best Comedy as the episodes are actually funny unlike FG. Sadly SP will probably lose to Robot Chicken.
Most of the nominees here are the usual people who shouldnt be nominated like that christine show and two and a half men. I’m actually fine with Sarah silverman nominated since I actually like that show, although its mostly hit or miss. I dont get how SNL’s castmembers are lumped into the comedy category. Esp amy Poehler who was only in a few episodes.
30 rock is fine. But 4/5 in best writing is too much. But its better than two and a half men being nominated.
I don’t know about that. True Blood’s writing has improved dramatically since last year especially with the introduction of Maryann, the trip to Dallas and the Fellowship of the Sun. In fact, a lot of the tv critics said that True Blood was snubbed and it had more to do with the Emmys bias against vampires and science fiction. I mean Battlestar Galactica wasn’t nominated either. Neither was Buffy (which deserved it the 1st 5 years especially for the ep The Body). I hope Damages beats Mad Men!
I can’t respect an award show that would nominate Entourage for anything.
