Former William Morris agent David Lonner isn’t just finalizing his deal to become an independent manager. I’m told he and Atlas Entertainment founder and workaholic film producer Chuck Roven (The Dark Knight, Get Smart) want to join up in a talent management company together. Roven has always kept his hand in the management biz after starting two incredibly successful management companies — for musicians with 3rd Rail’s Bob Cavallo that was bigtime for 10 years, and for motion picture talent with Jimmy Miller that sequed into Mosaic for another decade. “Look, Chuck is a great producer and smart businessman and he adds a lot of value to David,” a source tells me. There’s no formal deal set, but I hear both parties want to get this venture up and running in the fall. For the past 3 1/2 months since I first reported that Lonner wouldn’t make the merge with WME, he’s been talking to every significant management biz — 360, 3 Arts, Brillstein, etc. But I hear Roven called him and said, “Look, I’ll tell you what I told Bob Cavallo way back when: you represent great talent, and I want to bet on you.” (Amazing to me that Variety left this info out of its Lonner story Monday. The trade didn’t know…)

Two very decent men. I would tell talent to flock to them. They are both honest.
It’s really impressive how seriously beverly hills very rich kid Chuck Roven has been so successful. Usually these kids do o.k but after a slow start, he’s really proved himself to be one of the top in his field. He wasn’t born into showbiz tho and I don’t even know him, never will. Just had no idea he would turn out like this.
“Decent”????????????? Chuck Roven????????? Are you kidding me?
He is been so horrible to so many people – so high-handed, so arrogant, so downright piggish – and miserable – and rude… and not very talented.
Urggggh.
The tri-fecta would be if Alan Gasmer went in with them. Another good guy with great sensibilities. He’d be a good fit.
Does David Lonner still think he is a dolphin in the land of Sharks. Truly a fraud
I had the good fortune of having worked alongside Lonner and can tell you that he is both an exceptional businessman and judge of talent. What is most impressive is his depth of character, even under duress. I wish him all the best and implore the most talented amongst us to get in line to call this man your manager!
Its amazing how many quality people Ari and Rick got rid of. David Lonner is a first class agent with big time agents. Why did they get rid of him. No reason same thing for many others. The word on the street is money problems are mounting. Many agents are going to be asked to share assistants. That means more people on the streets. More agent and support staff firings coming next week. The power struggle continue’s in the syndication department. Sean and Lance insist they are in charge. John Ferriter is losing power but his troops are loyal to him. Work it out boys. Consulting, commercials and Miami get ready for a rough time..
David Lonner is a great person. He was a great agent and everyone loved him. People want him to succeed because he cares not only about his clients, but about his colleagues too. He and Fogelman always had a struggle to get along since Lonner was head of Mopic when he first came over from Endeavor before Fogelman become the head. In any event, whenever he and Fogelman got into it 99% of the WMA agents were in Lonner’s corner. What Lonner did was instill confidence and good will between everyone. What Fogelman did was instill fear and depression in the staff meetings by regularly calling out agents and embarrassing them in front of everyone. Fogelman never realized that he was hated so much. People just dont like dealing with him. Lonner on the other hand was a gentleman and a great agent. With David you would talk freely and openly and feel like you couuld get so much accomplished.
I am so glad to see Lonner taking his time and not rushing into this important decision. So glad for him that he is starting something new. I wish him all the success in this town. If I was a writer I would want to be repped by David Lonner.
Starting Monday we started cutting clients. Some that have been loyal clients for years. It was not the right thing to do. We were good with them when they were making lots of money but when things were not going as well for them we cut them. It’s official, our wages are getting cut. How does Ari, Rick and Dave think we can live on 11 dollars an hour. It’s amazing that they would cut our little pay. Next thing we heard is that agents will be asked to share assistants. It already started in Miami. Patty Kim in NY is already sharing an assistant. What is really going on behind the doors in the big offices. Everything seems to be about cutting expenses. To us in the trenches it seems like the merger has caused a major financial burden. I came to William Morris to become an agent but its not looking as promising anymore. Good assistants will begin leaving.
Lonner is one of the great guys in this business… hell, in this world.
Karma is gonna so catch up with Ari for how he’s treated him.
I so wanted to say something catty here but these two are each too smart separately so working together just makes so much sense.
GLA!
david lonner repped me for a few years back in the 90′s and it was a privilege to work with him/have him work on my behalf. he is loyal, principled, supportive, a great advocate and advisor, honest (especially when you need tough love), and fair. a combination of qualities you don’t often find in hollywood…
david is a good guy, smart and i’m confident he will do well wherever he lands. in fact, i think the added autonomy he will have as a manager running his own shop will allow him to flourish (and his clients with him).
Lonner is a great agent and a great guy. Much brighter than Fogelman. If given the right environment he will get to the top. Here is his chance. I agree with most of these postings. Lonner is the smarter agent and well respected. Fogelman deserves to be fired and reminded about being a human being.
