Paramount keeps crowing about all the records that Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen keeps breaking. How it's now the 2nd fastest film in history to earn $300M in U.S. ticket sales after The Dark Knight. (It just passed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest by two days.) 2007’s Transformers earned $319.2M in its theatrical run, and more than $700M worldwide. The sequel has already taken in over $600M worldwide to date, besting several records (including what I think has to be one of the Top 10 worst reviewed blockbusters of all time):
•Biggest Wednesday-Sunday opening of all time.
•Biggest Wednesday opening of all time.
•Paramount’s biggest international opening of all time.
•3rd biggest worldwide opening weekend of all time.
•4th biggest international opening of all time.

It’s a sad day for fans of quality films worldwide….
Are you kidding?
Did George Orwell write this fucking release?
It eclipsed the previous record for second fastest to 300 million, so it’s a record???
Did Dance Flick set the record for 873rd fastest to 25 million? Beating previous record holder Superhero Movie by 4 hours? Where’s that release?
If “The Dark Knight” is still #1, how can they get away with saying that “Transformers” is “record-setting”? In other words, when did coming in at #2 constitute setting a record?
•Biggest Wednesday-Sunday opening of all time.
•Biggest Wednesday opening of all time.
•Paramount’s biggest international opening of all time.
•3rd biggest worldwide opening weekend of all time.
•4th biggest international opening of all time.
AND OF COURSE
•Biggest piece of shit of all time.
Let’s come back to this after Harry Potter 6 has been out for 2 weeks. My hunch is it’ll have more.
Just so we’re clear, it’s not ‘record time’ if it’s not faster than the Dark Knight.
Worst movie ever.
It’s also the worst movie to ever make so much money so quickly. Reviews have been terrible across the board. Audiences walk out with a splitting headache. It’s also at least a half hour too long. There’s nothing to be proud of here. It’s not really a movie it’s an assault on the senses. GI Joe will be even worse. Check out Robot Chicken’s “Baysplosions” clip on youtube it’s only 40 seconds and it’s a lot more entertaining than this monstrosity of a movie. That Michael Bay he blows up things real good!
Jesus… you add enough qualifiers and anything is a record. Without checking… Trans 2 is probably the biggest second weekend drop for a movie that made over 100 mil its opening weekend in July and starts with a ‘T’
I like all kinds of movies. And I liked this one, even though I did not like the first one very much. Transformers 2 was a great action movie with more action than I have ever seen. Of course I went in expecting nothing but ready for anything.
It is not an intellectual or modern art movie and it never claimed to be. If you want to see that go rent the movies that win oscars but don’t bring home the bank.
The first movie I ever saw at the theater was ‘Star Wars’ at age seven. It changed my life forever. Had I seen this at age seven, it would have blown my mind just the same.
I just love how many people feel the need to trash this movie and spew out their negativity. All the while Michael Bay is laughing all the way to the bank.
But somehow the studio will still find a way to claim poverty.
Grosses are one thing, but do we know yet the number of admissions sold? The MPAA says the average U.S. ticket price for 2008 was $7.18, up a substantial 30 cents from 2007’s average of $6.88. But with TF2 still in first run, the grosses are misleading unless they are adjusted for bums in the seats.
In any event, mazel tov for Paramount. In the best tradition of citizenship and loyalty, I’m certain that this cash flow will let them hire back all the people they canned from all the Viacom divisions.
I think it’s hilarious that the film continues to perform so strongly. Too bad they didn’t open it on a Friday, since it would’ve clearly taken Dark Knight’s Midnight and 3-Day records.
It won’t threaten Titanic’s domestic gross, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it surpasses Dark Knight worldwide.
And that would really be hilarious.
Nobody is forcing you to see TRANSFORMERS. If having gratuitous explosions and hot chicks in lieu of plot doesn’t interest you, then don’t see it.
Clearly, lots of people were intrigued by the premise, despite the reviews. Myself included (loved it for what it was, wasn’t expecting more, wasn’t disappointed).
If that’s how you guys feel, I hope you went to see Moon. At the beginning I was going to walk out, I thought it made no sense. At the end I was cheering. It’s a good flick. All the pieces come together in the end.
Watched Transformers 2 for the second time tonight on IMAX.. and still enjoyed the movie. The internet haterism this flick is getting online is certainly not being reflected in the real world. I turned around and saw the theater had a healthy crowd. I think this one will finish strong with $350 mill in the bank.
Don’t forget this record:
Biggest Number of No-Talent Hollywood Dick-Heads Benefiting from Summer Movie-Goers Lack of Other Viewing Alternatives of All Time!
What a bunch of whining idiots you all are. If the movie wasn’t good why would people see it again and again? Well, dumbshits, they see it because it IS good for the audience it took aim at. It has it all. And what neanderthals STILL listen to critics? The typical 12-17 year old boy eschews most critical analysis. You guys are ridiculous. It broke some records. It makes Bay richer. It makes Paramount the studio to beat for blockbusters. It makes Paramount’s marketing team the savviest team in the biz. And it allows for TF3 which will again bring in the masses. C’mon dopes, this isn’t high art. It’s loud, obnoxious explosions with talking robots. Big, badass taking robots. Sounds like a winner to me.
Good grief, it may not be the best movie ever made, and it isn’t, but it is far from the worst. Some people act as if The Dark knight was the best movie ever made and if it wasn’t they would just die. Well, it wasn’t and they won’t.
Transformers 2 is an entertaining piece of fluff. I have no desire to see it again but I don’t regret having seen it.
This was a horrible movie. This movie should also have “biggest waist of Transformer name in history”.
Forget the haters, it’s a fun movie. All of you pretentious people still have your own robot movie you can watch–I hear your “Wall-E” DVD calling for you. Nothing like a mentally challenged robot who wins the heart of a supermodel robot for no reason at all, set in a perfect guilty “inconvenient truth” environment. Go watch that sensitive robot movie that no little kid wants to watch instead of Transformers. Transformers is a robot movie for people who still want the fun put in.
First, the movie is certifiably terrible – it makes the first look great by comparison. That people still want to see it is amazing…..but to each his own.
However – enough with the phony “RECORDS”. I wish the media would stop making up benchmarks so that they can be claimed as records.
Biggest Wednesday to Sunday? Has that ever mattered?
Biggest Wednesday opening of all time? When 95% of movies open on Friday, this record is pretty hollow.
Paramount’s biggest international opening of all time? I just took the longest break between bathroom visits, am I a record holder to?
3rd biggest worldwide opening weekend of all time? That’s NOT EVEN A RECORD!!
4th biggest international opening of all time? NEITHER IS THAT!!
This is so-o-o-o tiresome. All of you, both Bay-lovers & Bay-haters are missing the point. Press releases like this are truly not meant for you, although getting another ass in a seat in a theater is a welcomed by-product. Nope, a press release like this is meant for just three kinds of people: the shareholders, potential investors and rival studio execs. The first to placate, the second to entice and the third to simultaneously rub their noses in it AND as a possible poaching hire in the near future. Now THAT’S showbiz!
@FunBoy “Well, dumbshits, they see it because it IS good for the audience it took aim at.”
The thing is, last summer proved that a movie about explosions and superhero’s and robots doesn’t have to be terrible – that it can appeal equally to those under 17 and those over.
And now TF2 (and I’m guessing GI Joe) will undue that good work.
This one is definitely for the books. Should be studied for how inept the whole affair is. Doesn’t get any worse in my opinion. Common denominator shit!!!!!
Isn’t the real story how much money the studios are making when SAG just gave them “time to explore the profitability” of the internet? Oh SAG. You’re so dumb it’s funny.
