Judd Apatow will direct those next 3 films,
so Universal will now be his helming home. Obviously, this means the studio has great faith in his pic Funny People opening this weekend which already has a Rotten Tomatoes positive review score of 70+%. Although there’ve been media doubts about the film’s 2-hour, 25-minute length and dramedy subject matter, weekend estimates now range from Universal’s $25M (to lower expectations), to rival studios’ high $30sM and even $40M. The tracking is showing big and broad 4-quadrant appeal, with the most interest coming from young men and even older females. But Universal keeps comparing this R-rated pic to a Jim Brooks-type direction, and his more successful movies only opened in the high teens but then enjoyed a huge multiple. Given the studio’s trouble at the box office this summer, Funny People must make at least $100M domestic. Its cost is estimated at $70M.
Apatow has only helmed films at Universal after making his directorial debut in 2005 with the breakout comedy hit starring Steve Carell and Catherine Keener, The 40-Year Old Virgin. The film made over $177 million worldwide and was largely credited for setting a new standard in raunchy but heartfelt adult comedies that were smart and cutting-edge. In 2007, Apatow directed Knocked Up for Universal, a breakout laugher hit starring Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann that made over $219 million worldwide. (Interestingly, Funny People is not that much longer than Knocked Up.) Apatow also created a comedy wheel-type ensemble cast for his movies, helping launch a number of big-screen comedy careers including Carell, Rogen, Heigl, Jason Segel, Russell Brand and Jonah Hill.

Apatow’s insistence on such lengthy films is incomprehensible. If they shaved 30 minutes off of Knocked Up they could’ve doubled their box office. They’re about to make the same mistake with Funny People.
It’s just like a Jim Brooks movie except for the cast, script and director.
But you won’t notice the difference until award season.
I’m very excited for this movie, but most of my (mid-20′s) friends aren’t. It was poorly marketed, with that unappealing Sandler/Rogan/Mann poster and the subpar trailers.
It’ll do well, but I’d be surprised if it hits 40 YO Virgin/Knocked Up numbers.
Apatow’s films are usually pretty affordable, so the risks are small, and the profit potential huge, so this might be the smartest thing Uni’s done in a while.
Several of Universal’s recent releases could have been modestly profitable, if they hadn’t spent so much on them. They handled Bruno as if it was going to be Dark Knight huge, where its predecessor Borat made only about $125 million domestic. I heard that Uni spent that much on buying and then promoting Bruno before it even hit the screens.
Love him or hate him, Apatow has a winning strategy, he keeps his films small enough to be profitable, even if they don’t become blockbusters.
Watching a Judd Apatow film is like watching a dog lick his own nuts. But given the general downward spiral of our nation, his success is not surprising. Lap it up, Useful Idiots!
I sincerely hope this film does well. I snuck into two test screenings for it and it’s incredible. I’m glad they didn’t cut much from the running time, it’s seriously that enjoyable.
And this is coming from someone who HATED Knocked Up and just about every other Apatow produced movie since he directed 40 Year Old Virgin, which is a classic.
Real budget: 100 MILLION PLUS for this comedy photographed expensively by one of the best (most expensive) D.P.’s Janusz Kaminski in the business.
“FP” cost closer to 100m. 48 million of which was ATL.
This does not include P&A costs.

On Monday the trades will be claiming that “Funny People” was the second victim of the “Twitter Effect”.
Mary Parent deserves credit for buying 40 Yr. Old as a pitch and allowing Judd to direct. She started the ball rolling.
The good news is that Judd Apatow wrote Funny People. As a writer, he hasn’t disappointed in years – Virgin, Knocked Up, Walk Hard and Zohan were very entertaining. If only he could sort out his actor boys – overexposed eyesore Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen deserve a break.
For the love of consistency, why not stick to a standard when quoting the same source (here: rottentomatoes)? You used to quote only the top critic score, and that’s 50 % here, then changed your pattern when you wrote about Brüno. Love Universal, hate the Weinstein bros, we already know that…
50 % for Funny People seems to be on target considering the very mixed “word on the street”. Hope it doesn’t go the way of Don’t Mess with the Zohan – totally underrated smartness.
Why is the ATL is so high given the subject matter?
Saw the movie last night and very much enjoyed it! Yes, it was a bit raunchy, yes, it was a bit lengthily, but it had heart and to me was very enjoyable. Maybe it isn’t ’40 Year Old Virgin’ or ‘Knocked Up’. Will it do as well as either? Maybe not as I believe it would probably have to be significantly better than previous outings to do as well. By nature the public expects more with each new release from a director such as Aptow. Still, it might do well enough to put butts in seats considering the competition it faces.

I can’t wait for your next film to come out! I am sure it will be great!Name one creative thing you did you nitwit!
I understand why the ATL was so high– Apatow, Sandler, Rogen, etc. all value themselves very highly and can get away with it.
My question is why is the BTL so high? $50 million going to what? Based on my view of the trailer, this movie looks like it could have been shot easily for $10 million.
Where is all that money going?
Should shooting a few fancy houses, restaurants, and parks here in our own backyard really be that expensive?
Everyone complains about runaway production, but shooting in LA has become a real luxury, and it’s got the prices to match.
Here we go again. Same old story rehash a million times by the same director.
Always the male lead being in a low-down barrels of problems only to rise to the occasion at the end of the movie. Same thing for 40 yr old, Knocked up and now this
Hollywood..you never failed to surprise me…NOT!

I bet this is from Steven Levitan.
Apatow does great work and really do enjoy watching his films. Bt seriously, two and a half hours? Give me a break. Please. Knocked Up was hilarious, but I honestly got bored, like, halfway through.
Movies about comedians have not done well for some reason. It might be because underneath the humor, all comics are backstabbing, assholes who’d screw their mothers for a dime.
I think the film will under perform and fade fast.
Sorry Judd.
Apatow can write whatever he wants, but ‘The Hangover’ has already surpassed any of of his films.
What Apatow film has grossed $250 million domestic?
Is there at least going to be a title card warning the audience before Apatow shows a severe close-up of some guy’s penis?
And 2 1/2 hours for a comedy, when are these directors going to be reined in? It’s barely tolerable for most action movies. When did strong, brisk pacing drop dead?
This movie is going to do half of the business of his previous efforts based on the WOM alone. It’s too raunchy for older folks and too long and boring for the younger crowd. Frankly, it’s the kind of movie Judd should have made in his 60′s…there are some laughs, but the pathos isn’t there. There is no emotional connection to these characters and frankly it’s completely insular…lacking in the ‘populist’ touch that made his previous efforts so enjoyable.
it’s too early in his career, too self indulgent and frankly…just plain weird. Kaminski’s camera does not sync well with Apatow’s directing and the editing is terrible.
I will be shocked if this movie makes $100m by 9/1/09…
Have seen the trailer where Sandler says to his doctor “too bad you died at the end of Die Hard”. This is supposed to be funny… because he has an accent? Really? Or is it supposed to be as pathetic and lame as it seems? Passing on this one.
When will Seth Rogen wean himself from Apatow’s hairy teat? And when will SNL parody the Bongpack as they did with the Bratpack in the 80s?
