Judd Apatow will direct those next 3 films,
so Universal will now be his helming home. Obviously, this means the studio has great faith in his pic Funny People opening this weekend which already has a Rotten Tomatoes positive review score of 70+%. Although there’ve been media doubts about the film’s 2-hour, 25-minute length and dramedy subject matter, weekend estimates now range from Universal’s $25M (to lower expectations), to rival studios’ high $30sM and even $40M. The tracking is showing big and broad 4-quadrant appeal, with the most interest coming from young men and even older females. But Universal keeps comparing this R-rated pic to a Jim Brooks-type direction, and his more successful movies only opened in the high teens but then enjoyed a huge multiple. Given the studio’s trouble at the box office this summer, Funny People must make at least $100M domestic. Its cost is estimated at $70M.
Apatow has only helmed films at Universal after making his directorial debut in 2005 with the breakout comedy hit starring Steve Carell and Catherine Keener, The 40-Year Old Virgin. The film made over $177 million worldwide and was largely credited for setting a new standard in raunchy but heartfelt adult comedies that were smart and cutting-edge. In 2007, Apatow directed Knocked Up for Universal, a breakout laugher hit starring Seth Rogen, Katherine Heigl, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann that made over $219 million worldwide. (Interestingly, Funny People is not that much longer than Knocked Up.) Apatow also created a comedy wheel-type ensemble cast for his movies, helping launch a number of big-screen comedy careers including Carell, Rogen, Heigl, Jason Segel, Russell Brand and Jonah Hill.

Every time an Apatow-directed movie gets made, the prices go up. “Knocked Up” and “40 Year Old Virgin” were made for $30 million or less than that, so what’s up with “Funny People” costing $70 million? Is it the on-location shooting in L.A., the DP’s salary, the upfront costs of the actors, what?
Universal is going to have to rein Apatow in if this film tanks. I wouldn’t be surprised if this happens to be Apatow’s first dud.
So over this crew, Rogen especially. His performances are consistently stilted, he’s unappealing onscreen and displays the charisma of a hammer toe. He owes most of his success to riding Apatow’s coattails; look no further than last April’s date-rape blockbuster ‘Observe and Report’.
Don’t understand why this film cost so much to make – seems like the kind of movie that the studio could have negotiated backend deals for the talent since it gives them a chance to broaden their audience and it might be worth the risk for them.
It also seems to be the kind of movie an independent director could have made for $15 mil tops.
He’s yet to make a film worth watching. What’s with the praise for 40 Year Old Virgin? It’s wasn’t smart, funny or edgy. Every media outlet seems to be in this guy’s pocket. I was hoping for more from you. This is just more studio manufactured hype and it’s a shame to see you playing right into it. Or maybe you have to because you’re no longer an independent operation. Sad. Apatow is overrated. He’s not funny and has nothing insightful to say. If you want a really good comedy with heart try renting Tamara Jenkins’ The Savages. This guy needs to be put out to pasture. Just because he’s Jewish doesn’t mean he’s gifted in comedy. Wake up.
The marketing of this movie turns me off.
Hence, I’ll wait to see it on Netflix before I shell out $12 to sit in a theatre and be disappointed.
Dear “Smarty” Unless you are Mary Parent or one of her relatives, nice shout out!
