The Dark Knight opened July 18, 2008. Get ready for these comparisons to go to shit.
It may be up with all the kid flicks, but they all stink except Star Trek. Next summer the numbers will go down except for Toy Story 3, Green/Hornet/Lantern/ Robin Hood etc.
Expect a drop of unless the critics like these 2010 films.
2009 will still be up a few titles still to be released … Harry Potter, New Moon, Avatar, Shutter Island, and a couple more.
Oh yeah. The studios are hurting bad. No wonder they couldn’t give the writers or actors what they needed. It’s no wonder AMPTP told them both “No” and that they both caved in to these poor, destitute studios that are just floundering. They had to cut down their rosters because they weren’t making “any” money. I suspect these numbers would rise if they chose to hire real actors and not these meat puppets who have them convinced they need $20 mil per picture to work.
This industry is so fucked up, it’s insane!
The Dark Knight crowd…is still so very impressed by shiny numbers wrapped in a pretty nifty super hero film.
I’d expect Harry Potter to complement the T2 numbers to the point where this year WILL be higher than last year, and Avatar isn’t even on the horizon…yet.
Wait, I thought there was no money around to pay a living wage to middle class actors??? Help, was I being lied to?
Total box office is always the result of a handful of hit movies. Let’s look at the bigger picture though. With YTD box office revenues up by over 11% and totaling almost $5.5 BILLION, the claims of poverty that the media moguls keep crying out in order to justify screwing the unions and all the other rank and file workers who keep this town humming are pretty disingenuous.
do all these numbers going up mean more layoffs?
Nikki..you ought to include the total no of movies released at this mark for both year to then be able to make a better comparison.
We will then know for sure whether the uptick on this year’s B.O was due to quality or quantity!
Cheers
