CBS is just gloating in its news release (below). Whereas NBC actually thinks it's news that Conan originals won demos 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54, despite up against encore telecasts of "Late Show with David Letterman". So I have to ask: is late night this fall gonna be a bloodbath?
For the second consecutive week, rebroadcasts of LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN delivered more viewers than originals of "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien," and finished in its closest ever competitive position in adults 18-34, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for the week ending Aug. 14.
Rebroadcasts of LATE SHOW delivered a 2.1/05 in households with an average of 2.95m viewers, up +11% in households (from 1.9/04) and +12% in viewers (from 2.64m) compared to the same week last year (also a week of rebroadcasts). LATE SHOW was up +13% in adults 25-54 (0.9/04 from 0.8/03), +25% in adults 18-34 (0.5/02 from 0.4/02) and even in adults 18-49 (0.7/03) compared to the same week last year.
LATE SHOW rebroadcasts beat first-run "The Tonight Show" in households (2.1/05 vs. 1.9/05, +11%) and viewers (2.95m vs. 2.67m, +10%). This week's viewer advantage is 40 times greater than the prior week of rebroadcast (+7,000 viewers). LATE SHOW has now topped "The Tonight Show" in households and viewers for six consecutive weeks.
Even in rebroadcasts, LATE SHOW finished in its closest competitive position to "The Tonight Show" in adults 18-34 (0.5 vs. 0.8, -0.3) since Conan's premiere as host on June 1.
For the fifth consecutive week, THE LATE LATE SHOW with CRAIG FERGUSON beat "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" in households (1.1/04 vs. 1.0/04, +10%) and viewers (1.46m vs. 1.36m, +7%). THE LATE LATE SHOW posted a 1.1/04 in households with 1.46m viewers, up +10% in households (from 1.0/03) and +14% in viewers (from 1.28m) compared to the same week last year. THE LATE LATE SHOW was even in adults 25-54 (0.5/03), adults 18-49 (0.4/03) and adults 18-34 (0.3/02) compared to the same week last year. Note: Due to PGA Highlights, Thursday's and Friday's broadcasts aired with amended titles and are not included in the weekly average.
Carl Icahn Now Wants ALL Of Lionsgate
I’m a Letterman fan, but I also used to be an Olbermann fan. When Keith started doing really well in the demo against O’Reilly, I thought that was really awesome.
So I don’t know how to take this news. I’m glad Dave is number one, but he’s not doing that well with the kids. This, despite years of him saying “heeeey kids.”
Right now it is so easy to predict ratings results for NBC it is criminal. If original Conan Tonight Show episodes aren’t beating Late Show repeats, then something is wrong and an outside consultant will have to be brought in to identify what it is and fix it. Other than that, we all know that Conan is losing viewers and fast to the point of no return while The Jay Leno Show will likely be the first big bomb of the season. By big, how about having Monday Night Football and WWE RAW beat up on Jay. Keep in mind that both are cable shows and that CSI Miami will, at the very least be a repeat and the number show at 10 PM on the broadcast networks.
The key is maybe to look at what changed between 12:30 Conan and 11:30 Conan – The tone of the 11:30 Conan show is very bright and loud and busy. Maybe they should have just moved the 12:30 show intact to 11:30 instead of changing it? Since it was working?
I mean, I can’t come up with anything else. I’m sure the consultant will. They always do.
The problem is NBC wanted the “younger audience” well they got it, but, that audience is a lot small, Conan appeals to a limited number of younger viewers, where as Leno appeals to the masses.
NBC screwed up big time, if Conan gave them an ultimatum then they should have said hit the road. Because I doubt ABC or CBS would have hired him, and the Tonight Show would still be number one like it was for 17 years and NBC would still be raking in the cash, which they won’t be if this keeps up.
Conan is too much “Harvard Lampoon” for 11:30pm, plain and simple.
NBC screwed up big time, if Conan gave them an ultimatum then they should have said hit the road.
And if the rumors about the demise of The Jimmy Kimmel Show are true, watch as talks resume between Leno and ABC. Leno will return to late night; it’s simply a matter of when and where.
Beginning September 14, my TiVo will record Leno at 10:00 p.m. I will then watch him at 11:30 p.m. Is this a great country or what?
Rumors about the demise of Jimmy Kimmel? I will now out Lesley as a Jay Leno lackey. Jimmy Kimmel has never been stronger. The ratings are sound, he’s on the cutting edge of pop culture, and unlike Jay who’s in his 60s for Christ sake, Kimmel can reach a young audience. He’s my second favorite late night host after Craig Ferguson, but he’s a close second.
Off topic, but I’m too tired to post in another comments section. Saw Inglorious Basterds. Loved it, and I’m not even close to being a Tarantino fanboy. If it were a half hour shorter we’re talking classic.
“Something is wrong and an outside consultant will have to be brought in to identify what it is and fix it.”
What’s to fix? The format is the format. Guy comes out, tells jokes for 10 minutes, goes to desk, shows comedy piece, commercial, 1st guess comes out, 2nd guest, Musical act. End of show.
People either like the host or they don’t.
Conan should have been a summer fill in for Jay. He’s too edgy fun in NYC, boring out of place in LA.
Jeff – the Kimmel ratings couldn’t be less sound. They’re terrible. He’s getting beaten nightly in key demos by Chelsea Lately on E! and often times only draws a handful of more viewers than Carson Daly’s dreadful numbers. You can out Lesley as whatever you like, but you’re just wrong about Kimmel. He’s on the block – TRUST me.
Kimmel’s numbers are status quo, they haven’t dropped. Regardless, don’t look for Leno to go to ABC after Steve Mcpherson trashed him and NBC at the up fronts. If ABC wants to try and better Kimmel’s ratings they’ll have to look for fresh meat. Kimmel’s video-log at the top of the show is often very funny and I hope they stick with him. He’s also paid a lot less than other late night hosts, so maybe Zucker isn’t the only dude managing for the margins.
Hell, Jimmy gets a decent young demo. I’m dubbing him “King of Late Night.”
Jeff, Kimmel’s not even the King Of Late Night on his own fucking network. Nightline holds that honor.
And I’ll let you in on a little secret, too…he’s a huge, racist scumbag from many, many accounts. Regardless, 7 years of his droning mediocrity is long enough.
Uh Jeff, Jay Leno was born April 28, 1950. FYI, that makes him 59. I am in my 30’s and I happen to think the guy is hilarious. Many of my contemporaries feel the same way. Conan just plain sucks and Letterman, who’s 62 by the way, is the king of sight gags.
Kimmel could benefit greatly from a Jay Leno lead-in. And when Zucker’s 10:00 p.m. consolation prize fails, Leno will head to ABC.
In the meantime, as I said before, I will record Leno at 10 and watch him in his God-given, rightful time slot of 11:30. DVRs were invented for debacles like this.
ABC won’t cancel Nightline. No chance in hell. So it’s a long shot that Leno goes there. And Kimmel’s lackluster numbers have irritated the network long enough. Look for them to replace him with either a music related show, or sports.
Lesley, stop it, your contemporaries do not find Leno hilarious. Nobody finds Leno hilarious. Some found him a comforting late night sleeping pill, others think he’s a nice lad, a number of elders think he’s like a likable son…nobody says he’s hilarious.
Good luck with the new show, Lesley, I hope you and the other 199 Leno staffers don’t feel too bad about the thousands of drama staffers you’ve put out of work.
Jeff, you the funny police now? You shouldn’t tell people who they should find and not find hilarious. Not after dubbing Jimmy Kimmel, the bane of ABC – and basically a high-functioning-soon-to-be-canceled retard, the King of Late Night.
You my friend are a moron.
And BTW, Leno’s a good egg. Very charitable and nowhere near the the scumbag your fat, sleepy looking boyfriend Kimmel is.
Goo,
It’s obvious you have a vested interest in trashing Jimmy Kimmel. It’s also obvious by your “Leno is a good egg” remark that you’re not in the WGA, Leno’s own union, his “brothers” who were betrayed by his actions during our strike last year.
Take a break by your non-stop Internet assault on Mr. Kimmel to bone up on your facts, doofus.
Now go back to your subscription to the Drudge Report, and quit spreading anti-Kimmel propaganda. I don’t know anyone who has a bad word to say about Jimmy, except for you. So it’s 2 million to one. You’re outnumbered.
JEFF:
1) WGA member since 1992.
2) This is the first time I’ve ever bashed Kimmel, or anyone for that matter.
3) Registered Democrat.
4) If you haven’t met anyone who doesn’t say what an asshole Kimmel is, then you’re just not asking. I got ALL of my info from 2 employees, both of whom still work there. He’s an awful, rancorous piece of shit, according to both – who also finds creative ways not to pay his employees their due. Nice ladies these two, too. One of whom holds a pretty important job.
5) You’re bald and short, aren’t you.
And 6) I’m pretty sure a ’subscription’ to go to the Drudge Report is unnecessary, ding dong.
Jay Leno was the most disingenuous, insincere talk show host I have ever seen. Stealing bits from Howard Stern (Jaywalking) was the least of his offenses. As mentioned above, talk to his brothers in the WGA about how likable and authentic he really is.
Conan/Kimmel have had the best shows over the last five years. Letterman and Fallon are second best and always enjoyable. Even Furgueson has some moments.
Jay Leno is a hack. No thank you.
Oh, please. Conan caters entirely to the idiot male dirtbag demo. Too funny that this crowd defines itself as “edgy.” The show is getting exactly what it deserves: whipped. They rarely have female guests, especially in first chair. Their stage and staff is all male, save the shrill posts about random token low level staff. Hilarious that anyone is scratching their head over this no brainer. How is it even legal for this show to be so discriminatory. This show is toxic, creepy and tedious, and so are its fans and trolls.
