Nevertheless, CBS shares were up 7.14% in end-of-day trading. Les Moonves continues to preside over a small public company that is way too dependent on advertising, and every media company is feeling that slump. (Blame Sumner Redstone, who unequally divided Viacom and CBS, leaving to the latter pay channel Showtime but no cable which has been weathering the recession better than network.) Television (including the O&O's), network, radio, outdoor displays, were all down in the 2nd-quarter compared to last year. The company said it earned $15.4M, compared to a profit of $408.4M a year ago (that included a gain on the sale of its investment in Sundance Channel). Profit plunged 96%. Yes, 96%! Revenue fell 11% to $3.01B, down from $3.03B, lower than analysts had predicted.

And with a year like this, Les is bound to get the biggest bonus ever…
Suck it CBS. Good luck dealing with that debt load coming due in 2010. I’ll look forward to Les’s chest beating then. Leno’s gonna look like a very good move.
but he’s got some great movies coming out in the next year, sure to improve the outlook of CBS, right?
As I said last week, TV City would already be part of ‘The Grove’ if real estate prices weren’t so deflated. Like a world without General Motors, CBS will soon be sold off for parts… and downhill slide or no, Les will continue to get his obscene salary and bonus money. It was easy for him to look like he knew what he was doing when business was good… now that it is bad, and getting worse, he is obviously clueless as to how to fix it…. but hey, what does he care?
How can you tell when Les & Nina are lying / hyping? when there mouths are moving…
I wonder how much all the contracts for radio people off the air are costing CBS–Steve Dahl, Mike Murphy, Eddie and Jobo, etc.
CBS seems to be in a pseudo-noir play-it-safe-rut — how many CSI/NCIS/crime dramas or formulaic serialized game shows can one network offer before it dawns on them that they aren’t hip and edgy, but stale, boring, and depressing? Why does “innovative” translate to gutter or glamorizing crime?
Perhaps someone over there will realize that fun and funny always packs the house and leaves them wanting more and things will change for the better…here’s hoping for some constructive silliosity soon enough…
one word for this loser network..Katie Couric….they have got to be the biggest joke in the sorry world of TV networks
They killed Jericho 2yrs ago. This year they killed The Unit. I hate them forever. I’ll just watch 24 on FOX. It’s about the only show I like anymore.
The liberal main stream media is all paying a price.
The mainstream stations are becoming more irrelevant every day.
Sure, the surprising popularity of reality shows threw the networks a life preserver a few years ago. But the networks will duplicate them out of favor and then what? Hope for another life preserver?
NBC,CBS,ABC are the walking dead.
