Nikki, I’m IN the WGA and don’t give a crap about this stuff. It crams my inbox and goes ignored and deleted – how can ANYONE outside of a tiny minority of guild wonks give a rat’s patootie about this enough to warrant your coverage?
I agree. If going Financial Core would mean no election mailings and no Written By magazine then sign me up!
Maybe that’s the problem, Oh boy. Maybe, just maybe, if people actually cared about what happens in our union, maybe, just maybe, it wouldn’t be left to a narrow few to do what we should all care about: which is, what happens to us as writers. Joe Eszterhas had it right when he said, and I’m paraphrasing here, “Writers have the power, it all starts with us.”
If we don’t care about what happens to us, how can anyone else? If we don’t stand up for ourselves, who will? If we don’t participate, take an active interest in our Guild, how can we expect to be represented fairly? That caring starts with each and every one of us.
If you can’t muster up the interest to care about the direction of your Guild, maybe, just maybe, you should think about some other line of work. Maybe find something you do care about, something that requires nothing from you.
I agree with Oh boy.
Agreed. The Titanic has already set sail. Who the fuck cares.
As a lowly assistant reader, I agree with Oh Boy too
Completely O/T though: has anyone discerned the location of the next party43?
Oh Boy,
You’ll care when you get a letter saying that your health and pension plans no longer exist because the WGA is insolvent.
oe Eszterhas had it right when he said, and I’m paraphrasing here, “Writers have the power, it all starts with us.”
Well, I’m paraphrasing to. What I think he said was, “Really good writers have the power, It all starts with them; the rest of the “writer”s are the problem”.
No wonder your union is weak, with wussies like you making up part of the voting block.
You guys (or gals) don’t get it, you are electing the future path of your union. Leaving it to the “wonks” and worrying about the next party is exactly why writers are looked at as second class citizens in this business.
Show some balls and participate, then maybe you wouldn’t end up with crap as your leadership. Unbelievable the apathy you guys show in your own union.
Wow…just wow.
Hello Nikki,
As someone fortunately or unfortunately still with a day job outside of the industry, and a grateful and loyal SAG member, I respectfully submit that ALL of your coverage of the respective guilds leadership election is absolutely warranted, and I know that it is most appreciated.
In solidarity,
Robert Luis Rodriguez
Wow… I care… course I’m just a working actor, but I do know some of these guys… Jeff Melvoin for instance wrote a bunch of the shows for a series I was a regular on. I liked him, but thinking back he always seemed happiest running and producing in fact while a good writer, writing always seemed the means to the end of show running for him. I’m not surprised to see he supports John Wells… Anyway, Yeah I’m very interested.
I don’t believe the people at the top of this page are actually working writers. We just went through a massive strike (and then an equally massive de-facto SAG strike) which means, if you’re actually a working writer (which I doubt) you didn’t work. Everyone making a buck off writing most certainly cared about that. This is about money and when it comes to that people tend to have an opinion.
The battle line are pretty clearly drawn between the two major cards here. Pick one and vote. We’re going back for round 3 sooner than you think and the people elected today are going to be playing a major roll in if/what/how much/how long/for who/until when and once again, everyone working definitely cares about that. Or if what you’re actually saying is you’re too lazy to vote, believe me, no one is applauding your apathy.
Oh Boy:
You have the mind of a 12 year old moron. Now please quiet down and be still so we can strap the dunce cap to your head.
Thanks,
Management
How Mr. Wells treats his writers…

And this was while PRESIDENT of a union meant to fight for writers.
Oh, and if you do go fi-Core, while you do get the benefit of not receiving Written By, you don’t get to get the DVD screeners sent to your home. And with this goofy new rule of 10 movies nominated for Best Picture, there’s gonna be a ton of them! Whoo-hoo!
